Technology for ESOL Part 1: Computer Basics and Operating System Use these handouts while you go through the self-paced presentation. If you need help ask the Language Lab staff to assist you. Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move forward within the slideshow. Parts of the Computer: (write a brief answer to each of the following questions). Can you think of other types of hardware not mentioned in the slideshow? Start Using MS Word Slide 18: Tool Tips: Many applications help you learn the name of tools. Simply move your mouse over the buttons and tools and wait for a label to pop up. Can you find the names of these items: A. B. C. D. E. Read Slides 19-21: Then follow these steps to start using MS Word: 1. Type your name at the top of your new document. [Press the ENTER key] 2. You see that ENTER automatically starts a new line. Now copy the following sentences into the next line. Word processing applications like MS Word automatically start a new line when you are typing, you do NOT need to press [ENTER] when you are typing a paragraph. Now use the keyboard to copy this text into your Word Processing Document: An operating system (also called an OS) is what is needed to run the programs on a computer or a mobile device. The programs that run on an Operating System talk to the hardware. Microsoft Windows and Mac OS are common operating systems. Slide 22 Saving a document (read the slide and fill in the missing words): Follow these steps to Save Your : Click the Office Button (or File menu) and choose : (when you choose Save As you need to tell the computer the :where you want to save your file and also give the file a :. REMEMBER! It is very important to NOT change the file :). For LOCATION click Desktop For file name type a file name to the left of the period (before the extension). Read slides 23-24 opening / renaming documents. Follow these steps to complete the homework for this module: 1. Create a new word processing document. 2. Type in the document your full name on the first line then [ENTER] 3. On the next line type the date: (month/day/year) [ENTER] [ENTER] 4. On the next line type two or three sentences about yourself. Do not press enter; let the computer wrap lines as needed. 5. Save your document to your flash drive show it to your instructor.
