Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) Bassam Jbara 1
VDI Historical Overview Desktop virtualization is a software technology that separates the desktop environment and associated application software from the physical client device that is used to access it. Virtual Desktop Infrastructure is the modern version of the thin client movement of the 1990's. 2

VDI Storage Elements CORE OS & APPLICATIONS Performance & Availability are key attributes Backup & Replication important in persistent desktop cases Optimized for WRITE heavy workloads How much space: 5-25GB / user USER & GROUP FILE DATA Capacity & Availability are important Needs to be replicated & protected frequently Optimized for capacity over performance How much space: 10-100GB / user 11
Answering the important questions Why is VDI always WRITE Heavy? Windows constantly caches READ activity to the file-system cache WRITES don t get same benefits, and HAVE to be committed to disk Why does this matter? All writes need to be protected Standard methods of RAID apply 2-6x overhead So what does this mean? If most of the activity is WRITE, and needs to be protected then VDI solutions have to be optimized for heavy WRITE workloads 12
VDI Architecture Challenges Storage is often the enemy of performance Old-school remedies are inefficient Spinning hard drives can t go any faster Users are accustomed to dedicated local drives VDI places users into a shared container Waste of money to keep adding spindles just to get more IOPS Faster storage arrays are costly and still have limits The 15K drive is as good as it gets Physics get in the way and the drives self-destruct 13
