Getting Started with Lync What is Microsoft Lync? The Lync client ties real-time presence information with instant messaging, desktop sharing and voice communications for an all in one collaboration tool which integrates with Exchange email and Microsoft Office applications. Lync Client Requirements? You must have the Lync 2010 client software installed on your computer, a computer headset with microphone or a speaker/microphone capable computer and an Internet connection. How do I get a headset for my computer? Open an IT Request identifying that you need a headset for Lync How do I log into Lync? Open Lync client and click Do I have to be on the Brooks network to use the Lync client? No, all you need is an Internet connection and the Lync client installed on your laptop. Features on the Lync Client Screen What is the What s Happening Today field? You can use this field for short messages/details on your presence status. Please Note: When you set the Outlook Out of Office Assistant, your message will automatically appear in this field. What is presence? Presence statuses include Available, Busy, Away, and Do Not Disturb and are defined by a color scheme Lync Presence Descriptions. Your status is based on your Microsoft Outlook Calendar. How do I customize my location? Click in the Set Your Location field and enter the name for your current location. What is the conversation history? The conversation history is a combination of all your IM, meeting and phone calls. How do I review my conversation history? You can view your conversation history in the Lync main window by clicking the Conversations icon. When activated for a Lync contact, you will notified when their presence status changes Contacts How do I find another employee? Start entering their name in the search field and their name should automatically resolve. How do I add a contact? Search for the employee and drag them into a contact group. Please Note: When you add someone to your Contacts list, that person receives an alert about your action. What are frequent contacts? The frequent contacts group, found in your contacts list is automatically populated with your manager and direct reports by default. It also includes the people that you have interacted with recently. The people shown in this group change based on your communication patterns. How do I add a frequent contact? To add: Right click the contact, scroll to Pin to Frequent Contacts and select To delete: Right click the contact, scroll to Unpin from Frequent Contacts and select Please Note: If you already have a contact added to one of your groups and then pin the contact to the frequent contacts group the contact will appear in both the original group and frequent contacts. Instant Messaging How do I send an instant message (IM)? The quickest method is to double-click the contacts name and send message. Audio What is a Lync call? Yes, the quickest method is to open the options menu, select meet now and the group conversation window opens. Locate your contact and simply drag and drop into the conversation window. How do I add a participant to a call already in progress? The quickest method is to locate the contact and drag them into the conversation window. How do I answer an incoming call? You will receive a pop-up window. Click the green phone icon to accept the call. How do I add a group?
