Recommended Browser Settings for Self Service Applications Revised: 10/10/2013 vmc This document describes the steps to configure the common web browsers for use with the City of Boise s webbased applications. You only need to examine these recommendations if you are having trouble accessing or using the City applications or if you need help clearing the local browser cache. The web browsers covered in this guide are: Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 7 and above Mozilla Firefox version 3.5 and above Google Chrome version 3.0 and above Apple Safari for Windows version 4 and above The configuration features that are required for web browsers using the City s My Benefits applications are: Cookies must be enabled for the cityofboise.org and boise.local sites Pop up blocking must be disabled for the cityofboise.org and boise.local sites The HTTP 1.1 protocols must be enabled and enabled through proxy servers For Internet Explorer 9 and above, Compatibility View must be enabled Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 7 and above NOTE: For Internet Explorer running on City of Boise computers, these browser settings are implemented automatically through network polices. 1. Start Internet Explorer 3. Click on the Tools menu then select the Internet Options item 4. Click on the Privacy tab then click the Sites button 5. In the Address of Web site: field, enter the text cityofboise.org 6. Click the Allow button 7. In the Address of Web site: field, enter the text boise.local 8. Click the Allow button 9. Click the OK button To turn off Pop up Blocking for the City s website: 10. In the Pop up Blocker section, click the Settings button 11. Enter the text cityofboise.org in the Address of Web site to allow: field 12. Click the Add button 13. Click the Close button To enable the HTTP 1.1 protocol: 14. Click on the Advanced tab 15. In the Settings window, scroll the list down just about half and make sure the two following items have check marks in the boxes (if not, click on the box to turn the check mark on): Use HTTP 1.1
Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections 16. Click the OK button 17. Close all of your browser windows then restart your browser 18. For Internet Explorer version 9 and above, after opening the mybenefits.cityofboise.org website, click the Compatibility View button on the right side of the web address field. To clear the Internet Explorer cache and cookies: 1. Start Internet Explorer 3. Click on the Tools menu then select the Internet Options item 4. In the Browsing history section, click on the Delete button 5. Check all of the boxes then click the Delete button 6. Click the OK button 7. Close all Internet Explorer windows then restart the browser
Mozilla Firefox 1. Start Firefox 3. Press the Click on the Tools menu then select the Options item 4. Click on the Privacy icon at the top of the Options window 5. About mid way down the window, click on the Exceptions button 6. In the Address of web site: field, enter the text cityofboise.org 7. Click the Allow button 8. In the Address of web site: field, enter the text boise.local 9. Click the Allow button 10. Click the Close button To turn off Pop up Blocking for the City s website: 11. Click on the Content icon at the top of the Options window 12. On the first row labeled Block pop up windows click the Exceptions button 13. In the Address of web site: field, enter the text cityofboise.org 14. Click the Allow button 15. In the Address of web site: field, enter the text boise.local 16. Click the Allow button 17. Click the Close button 18. Click the OK button 19. Close all Firefox windows 20. Restart Firefox To clear the Firefox cache and cookies: 1. Start Firefox 3. Click on the History menu then select the Clear Recent History item 4. Set the Time range to clear to Everything 5. Expand the Details section by clicking the button and make sure all boxes are checked 6. Click the Clear Now button 7. Close all Firefox windows then restart the browser
Google Chrome 1. Start Chrome 2. Click the icon on the right side of the menu bar then select the Settings item 3. Near the bottom of the Settings page, click the Show advanced settings link 4. Click on the Content Settings button 5. Scroll the list down until you find the Cookies section 6. Change the radio button to Allow local data to be set 7. Click the Done button in the lower right corner of the page Regarding Pop up Blocking: 8. Near the bottom of the Settings page, click the Show advanced settings link 9. Click on the Content Settings button 10. Scroll the list down until you find the Pop ups section 11. If the radio button is set Allow all sites to show pop ups then skip to #13 below 12. If the radio button is set Do not allow any site then click the Manage Exceptions button then enter *.cityofboise.org in the Hostname Pattern field and set the Behavior to Allow. Enter another line with the value of *.boise.local in the Hostname Pattern field and set the Behavior to Allow. Click the Done button in the lower right corner of the page. 13. Click the Done button in the lower right corner of the page 14. Close all Google Chrome windows then restart To clear the Google Chrome cache and cookies: 1. Start Chrome 2. Click the icon on the right side of the menu bar then select the History item 3. Click the Clear browsing data button 4. Check all of the boxes on this form accept Deauthorize content licenses 5. Click the Clear browsing data button 6. Close all Google Chrome windows then restart the browser
Apple Safari for Windows It is recommended that you download the most current version of Safari for Windows here. 1. Start Safari 2. Click the icon on the right side of the menu bar and select the Preferences item 3. Click on the Privacy icon 4. In the Block cookie section, select the From third parties and advertisers option To disable Pop up Blocking: 5. Click on the Security icon 6. In the Web content: section, clear the check mark next to the Block pop up windows option. 7. Click the icon in the upper right corner of the Security window 8. Close all Safari windows then restart To clear the Safari cache and cookies: 1. Start Safari 3. Click on the Edit menu then select the Empty Cache item 4. Click the Empty button 5. Press the Alt key once 6. Click on the Edit menu then select the Preferences item 7. Click on the Privacy icon 8. Click the Remove All Website Data button 9. Close the window then close all Safari windows 10. Restart Safari
