QUICKRACK BASICS 1 The QuickRack offers a very simple and cost-effective solution for many electronic and network applications. First, it makes depth-variable installation of 19" components possible. And because of its 2 innovative design, QuickRack can be accessorized in a short time. Cable entry is via the open bottom frame or through a brush insert in the roof panel. Check out the basics of this innovative electronic and networking cabinet. 1 CABLE MANAGEMENT The roofs of all QuickRack enclosures feature a standard cable entry panel with brush insert. Cable bundles are routed into the QuickRack through an open bottom panel. 5 Removable base panels allow cable entry and exit from all directions. The combination rail ensures correct cable management. This rail allows two kinds of cable attachment: with cable ties to the top and bottom sprockets of the rail, or with cable clamps to the C-rail section of the combination rail. 2 CLIMATE CONTROL 4 Blank panels in the roof panel can be easily removed and replaced with fan inserts. 7

3 D ESIGN DETAILS Smart Solutions Two widths, three heights, two depths. High stability through multiple roll-formed vertical members. Large enclosure with cable-entry roof panel. Active ventilation possible by installing fans in the roof. The multiple roll-formed upright members provide high stability. Simple, elegant frame profiles. Four leveling feet are included with each QuickRack to help compensate for uneven floors. 4 D OORS/S IDEWALLS The front door has a sheet steel frame with a glass viewing window. Door hinging can be easily changed from left to right and vice versa. Ventilation slots in the sheet steel rear door promote air circulation within the enclosure. Viewing doors and sheet steel doors feature handles with security locks. Sidewalls have similar locks. Rows of QuickRacks can be easily connected with each other with connecting kits. Just hang the sidewalls in place and turn the lock it can t go any faster. 3 5 C OMPONENT INSTALLATION All QuickRacks feature a 19" mounting surface. Depth bars make it easy to depth-adjust both the rear and front mounting surfaces. Support rails can be hung and secured in the installation holes of 19" rails. Installation holes in the 19" rails and the frame offer ample opportunities to mount component shelves, fixed or on telescopic slides. Larger shelves can be mounted to brackets by removing the 19" rails. Power strips can be fastened to the vertical frame members of the QuickRack with an adapter bracket. 8

Designed To Cool High Heat Loads... SERVER FAN ASSEMBLY With today s high heat loads inside server enclosures, it is critical to use thermal management techniques which optimize enclosure ventilation. Having vented front and rear doors and a vented roof, Rittal s PS server cabinets provide such ventilation. Rittal s PS server fan assembly takes advantage of the front-to-rear airflow of most servers and allows the user to position the fan assembly in the most critical location within the cabinet. The powerful 220cfm high pressure fans feature a shallow depth chassis design and provide the ability to exhaust hot air out the rear of the enclosure at a dramatically higher rate than traditional roof mount fan trays. The result is cooler operating equipment, even with very high enclosure heat loads. Foamed-In-Place Gasket The foamed-in-place gasket is a thixotropic, two component modified polyurethane resin system. The gasket, being of a closed cell design, is excellent where very low water absorption is required. Other features of the gasket include: 1. Superior resilience, excellent compression recovery, provides a better seal. 2. Excellent adhesion to many substrates. 3. No seams or joints to leak-continuous bead. 4. Normal operating temperature of polyurethane foamed-inplace gasket is -40 C to +60 C (-40 F to +140 F). Shock And Vibration In many locations, sensitive electric and electronic equipment must often be protected against mechanical influences. This is especially important for equipment that is part of the infrastructure. As the world's largest enclosure manufacturer, Rittal has focused on the protection of electric and electronic equipment in enclosures to provide the best possible security against shock and vibration (such as in earthquakes). Dynamic stress can be divided into: Short-term stress Shock conditions in shelters and machines Earthquakes Long-term stress Stationary operation (machines in vicinity) Transport Intermittent disturbances (e.g. when generators start or stop) To date such vibration tests have been performed by: University of Bristol, England 3-axis vibration platform, 6 of freedom Technical University of Berlin, Germany 1-axis vibration platform, horizontal or vertical These institutes performed tests in accordance with the following specifications: Bellcore Technical Reference TR-NWT-000063 ANSI/IEEE Std. 344-1987 ANSI/IEEE Std. 693-1984 Parts of IEC 68 Please contact your local Rittal representative for more information or details on specific applications. Vibration can be damaging to both the functioning and the mounting of equipment in enclosures. It is possible to prevent vibration or achieve targeted damping when the inherent frequencies and types of vibration of an enclosure under stress are known. Rittal has developed two retrofit kits for enclosures to meet shock and vibration damping requirements; each condition requires a different approach. The shock-damping retrofit kit consists of rigid components because stiffening measures provide the best protection against shocks. The vibrationdamping retrofit kit consists of flexible components which damp vibration. This flexible solution is the best way to damp vibrations with harmonic or periodic disturbances of approximately 15Hz and higher. Rails are either secured directly to horizontal system chassis or to lateral top and bottom brackets. If rails are secured to chassis, use the drill and #3 phillips bit to remove self-tapping screws, reposition rails and reinsert screws. If supported on brackets, use the 10mm wrench or socket and reposition entire rail assembly. 2. Install four (4) large allen head bolts (from hardware bag) into shelf support cylinders. 3. Determine height of shelf and install the first support cylinder into the round hole on the rear flange of the rail (behind large square hole). Notch on the cylinder and drive head of bolt face into cabinet. Secure on opposite side of flange with slide nut ( C shaped fastener). Repeat for remaining three (3) cylinders on each rail. 4. Place shelf over cylinder bolts. Cutouts on shelf sides will fit over notches on cylinders. Slide shelf forward so small part of cutout is over cylinder notch. 5. Secure shelf with long sheet metal screw (in shelf hardware bag). Drive screw through shelf and behind cylinder. 84

Climate Control General Information The Need For Climate Control When the expense of electronic and electrical components and the costly implications of a system s down time are considered, it is important that all reasonable steps are taken to ensure that steady and reliable performance of a system continues. This should in almost all circumstances include climate control cooling and/or heating. The Purpose Of Cooling Electronic and electric equipment often generate a great deal of heat during operation. Frequently located in hostile environments, the equipment may also encounter the additional problem of not having safe, clean air available to dissipate unwanted heat. Such adverse conditions affect the performance and the life expectancy of electrical/electronic system components. Rittal cooling devices are precisely designed to solve the problems of internal heat build-up above component tolerances, excessive ambient temperatures, moisture and contaminant laden atmospheres and corrosive environments, which can affect sensitive electronic equipment. A little time and effort spent early in the design process can save a great deal of trouble and expense later by preventing the need to retrofit with proper cooling devices in the field during a down time situation. Information Needed For Climate Control Selection The following information should be on hand to properly size cooling products. (1) Heat to be dissipated (Watts) by the electrical components inside the enclosure (2) Maximum temperature expected outside enclosure ( F) (3) Maximum allowable internal enclosure temperature ( F) (4) Enclosure dimensions Request For Climate Control Application Information To: Rittal Corporation Tel. Three Basic Cooling Methods Climate Control General Selection Information When selecting a cooling method there are three types to consider. (1) Passive Ventilation - If there is only a minimal heat gain in your circumstance and the ambient air is relatively cool and clean, then the use of louvers or grilles with filters can be effective. This method, however, usually provides less cooling effect than is necessary with today s components. The temperature rise within a sealed enclosure is seen in Figure 2. (2) Forced Convection Air Cooling - If the installation will be in a clean, non-hazardous environment with an acceptable ambient (outside the enclosure) temperature range, a simple forced-air cooling system utilizing outside air is usually adequate. Combined with an air filter, such devices generally meet the heat removal needs of typical electronic equipment and many electrical applications (Fig. 1). Examples of forced convection air cooling are filter fans, pagoda roof fans, fan trays, and blowers of various types. FIGURE 1 - Forced Covection Method Outlet louvers Ambient Air with Heat Load Ambient Air Fan or Blower Cabinets Pressurized System - pushes air through enclosure Filter Fan Airflow Pagoda Roof Fan Airflow Fans And Blowers Can Be Used To Pressurize (Preferred) Or Exhaust Cabinet Air. The Ambient Air Should Be Filtered Before It Enters The Cabinet. (3) Closed-Loop Cooling - In harsh environments involving high temperatures, wash-down requirements, heavy particulate matter or the presence of chemicals capable of damaging components (NEMA 4 or 12 environments), ambient air must be kept out of the enclosure. Closed-loop cooling consists of two separate circulation systems. One system, sealed against the ambient air, cools and recirculates the clean cool air throughout the enclosure. The second system uses ambient air or water to remove and discharge the heat. Examples of closed-loop cooling equipment employed with electronics and process controls are heat exchangers and air conditioners. Blowers are used in higher static pressure applications (when internal equipment is densely packed), and are at maximum efficiency when operating near their peak static pressure. Climate Control Sizing Rittal offers four different methods to cool an enclosure, and one to warm an enclosure. To cool an enclosure, the following must be known: Size of the enclosure and exposed enclosure surface (A= m 2 ) = A Ambient temperature outside of the enclosure (Tu) Required temperature inside the enclosure (Ti) Difference = T Heat transfer coefficient (5.5 W/m 2 K sheet steel 3.5 W/m 2 K plastic) = k Heat loss (heat build up from the installed components installed) = Qv Solution of equation will give you required cooling capacity = Qe To calculate the exposed surface area of an enclosure, apply the following: (All values are metric) 1. Single enclosure, freestanding A = 1.8 x H x (W + D) + 1.4 x W x D 2. Single enclosure, against a wall A = 1.4 x W x (H + D) + 1.8 x D x H 3. First/last enclosure of a suite A = 1.4 x D x (H + W) + 1.8 x W x H 4. First/last against a wall A = 1.4 x H x (W + D) + 1.4 x W x D 5. Enclosure within a suite A = 1.8 x W x H + 1.4 x W x D + D x H 6. Enclosure within suite/wall A = 1.4 x W x (H + D) + D x H 7. Enclosure within suite/wall/roof A = 1.4 x W x H + 0.7 x W x D + D x H Example Of Air Conditioning Sizing: PS 4808 freestanding (2 x.8 x.8) 2000 x 800 x 800mm = 2 x.8 x.8m A = 1.8 x 2 x (1.6) + 1.4 x.8 x.8 (A= 6.6) Ambient = 95 F / 35 C Required internal = 88 F / 31 C Heat transfer coefficient = 5.5 Heat loss = 650 watts / 2210 BTU Required cooling = A x T x k + Qv (heat loss) 6.6 x 4 x 5.5 + 650 = 795 watts / 273 BTU Locate the air conditioner in the Rittal catalog that would best fit this application, confirm with performance diagram.
