The Status Quo Data is piling up. It is now common for companies to maintain multiple Petabyte storage environments. The problem: IT budgets are sometimes 40-50% consumed by storage. Storage isn t cheap for enterprises. According to ESG and Forrester estimates, the complete cost annually storing 100TB in-house is $402,500 and $955,500 respectively. IT leaders are faced with buying more in-house storage or finding a cost-effective approach to managing data growth. Did You Know? Most data in enterprise storage becomes low-touch, if not competely inactive, after just 30 days. Therefore, archiving to lower cost cloud storage just makes sense. IT leaders want to lower storage costs and manage data growth with cloud storage. But cloud on its own lacks enterprise security, data governance, end-user integration, and search. How It Works (without getting too technical) 1 3 Cloud Integration HubStor includes software (called the HubStor Connector Service) that installs within minutes in the customer s environment to connect their storage environment to HubStor, and let the customer define what data moves to the cloud. User Access HubStor gives users fast, easy access to their content. Sign-in is integrated with the customer s directory. Users can browse, search, retrieve, and even share their content from HubStor s web access portal. 2 Data Aware Archiving User awareness Analytics data 4 Search indexing A dedicated HubStor environment is created for each customer in Azure. As HubStor archives data in the cloud it links data to users, dynamically processes security and search indexing policies, and computes analytics data. This is later used to support secure user access and a number of data governance use cases. Data Governance Retention ediscovery & Audit Data Loss Prevention HubStor includes administrative apps for privileged users from IT, Legal, or Security to manage retention, perform ediscovery, run reports, and manage and monitor security.
Killer Features and Use Cases Top Use Cases: 1. File System Archiving 2. Search-as-a-Service / ediscovery 3. PST File Transformation Business Value: $ Manage Data Growth / Reduce Storage Costs Data Security Convenient Preservation in the Cloud User Productivity Killer Features: Compliance DLP policies Policy analytics Directory sync Scale-out object storage Retention End-user Web access Data ownership Cases, holds, exports Data-awareness Tagging Scoped indexing RBAC Flexible metadata File system stubbing Redundancy Activity auditing Deduplication Cloud integration Near-real time policies PII detection Relevancy ranking Content sharing Orphan user governance
Use Case Examples File System Archiving User-generated documents, application data, research data, media content, surveillance video, log files, evidence data there are many examples of unstructured data workloads that are large in volume, infrequently accessed, and deserving of better security. And because they rarely accessed after 30 days it doesn t make sense to keep them on expensive primary storage and backup. With HubStor, this content is securely preserved in the cloud, offloading primary storage and unlocking better storage economics. The security of your data is enhanced with seamless redundancy, de-duplication, data loss prevention, tagging, activity auditing, and role-based access controls. Data-awareness, fine-grained recovery, end-user Web access, retention, legal hold, and optional indexing make your data more manageable and securely accessible too. $ Search-as-a-Service / ediscovery Legacy archive systems typically fail to handle search at scale. And they make search a costly endeavour because they do not allow intelligent scoping (indexing is always the full archive or nothing). With HubStor, archives are cost-efficiently maintained in the cloud. Indexing can be deployed on demand and efficiently scoped through intuitive policies - by users, groups, content types, date ranges, or combinations with other criteria. This means you can index targeted subsets of your archive for end-users or ediscovery giving you the flexibility to keep search costs low while enabling rapid response for audits and investigations. And because it is search delivered from the cloud, you never have to worry about the performance and storage demands of an enterprise search engine. PST File Transformation.PST files take up large amounts of space on network storage and they are a compliance and data loss risk. They can also be the medium for migrating your legacy email archive to HubStor. But many sometimes 50% of the.psts you re storing belong to users no longer with the company. HubStor unpacks.psts and moves their contents securely to the cloud where user mapping is fully automated, even for orphans. Users can then access their PST data from HubStor s intuitive Web interface. In the cloud, HubStor also simplifies the security, search, tagging, and retention of.pst contents.
How Pricing Works HubStor is a pay-as-you-go monthly subscription with no startup or cancellation fees and no term commitments. Monthly subscription amounts are a transparent, volume discounted HubStor markup on your underlying cloud costs, as metered in Microsoft Azure. It s that simple. Fully-Loaded Monthly Cost / GB IN-HOUSE $0.32 HUBSTOR $0.04 When you subscribe, a complete data-aware archive environment is created for you in the cloud. Your organization is billed monthly in arrears for the usage of the service. FAQs on Pricing WITHOUT CONTENT INDEXING $ Public Cloud Costs Can I get fixed pricing? Because our model is based transparently on your actual consumption we do not provide fixed price estimates. We can accurately model pricing for you based on your organization s consumption profile. What about HubStor s on-prem software components? Subscription includes access to HubStor s Connector Service software and any published HubStor connectors you wish to use. Can I deploy under my own Microsoft Azure EA? Yes. HubStor can be deployed under your own Azure EA. Can I monitor and control my consumption? Yes. Consumption can be viewed at any time. + = HubStor Markup Monthly Subscription Amount What determines consumption? Utilization of the service is based on data volumes, redundancy needs, performance levels of machines, and data transfer activity. What information do you need for a price estimate? Here s what we need to know: 1) how much data do you intend to archive? 2) what s your estimated data growth rate? 3) how much of your archive will be retrieved each month? 4) do you wish to enable advanced content indexing? 5) if content indexing, what amount of your archive do you need to index? 6) what level of redundancy do you want for your data? The closer we can model your consumption the more accurate our price estimate will be.
Product Categorization Cloud archive Data-aware storage Cloud-integrated storage File system archive Object storage Fine-grained backup & recovery Competitors and Alternatives Cloud backup EFSS vendors Buy more in-house storage Legacy archive vendors CSG vendors Object storage vendors Native cloud storage Buy more in-house storage Status quo. Expensive. Not archiving. Legacy archive vendors These typically specialize in email, but some have file archiving too and are cloud-based. They are most often older solutions known for complexity in both their technology and pricing model, and are very expensive. Cloud backup Backup is not archiving, but some cloud backup players also offer file archiving. Cloud storage gateway (CSG) vendors These are storage appliance that interface the customer s storage environment to the cloud. They are expensive and don t handle data governance, search, and most enterprise security use cases beyond encryption. Native cloud storage / cold storage Cloud storage without HubStor is certainly the cheapest storage but it lacks key features like search, end-user access, directory integration, ediscovery, auditing, reporting, retention, and data loss prevention. Enterprise file sync & share (EFSS) vendors File sharing solutions are not archives, and despite having link-based file sharing abilities HubStor is not an EFSS solution. While great for user collaboration, EFSS aren t ideal long term data preservation and lack discovery, data goverance, and security features. We see HubStor and EFSS as highly complementary. Object storage vendors These vendors are often used for Web-scale storage needs. They lack end-user integration, data governance features, search, and need a CSG or custom integration to connect existing storage or applications.

Concerns about Cloud Archiving Public cloud isn t secure for enterprise archiving. With HubStor it is. HubStor delivers a private cloud experience on Azure with single tenancy, giving your organization a dedicated HubStor cloud archive environment with access to our enterprise security advantages which are detailed in our security whitepaper (found on this page: http://www.hubstor.net/downloads/) HubStor is expensive compared to Amazon Glacier or Google Nearline. Compared to legacy archives, cloud storage gateways, and in-house storage arrays, HubStor is much more affordable. But compared to cold storage options like Glacier and Nearline, HubStor is at a premium. HubStor is more expensive than cold cloud storage because it is an active archive environment that is data-aware and includes cloud integration, end-user access, data governance, search, and enterprise security features. It s much more than just dumb storage for dark data. Will my data be held hostage? Not with HubStor. There are no cancellation fees and our software includes collection features for ediscovery as well as bulk extraction features should you ever wish to get your data out completely. What if HubStor ever goes out of business? In this unlikely event your HubStor subscription in Microsoft Azure would be transferred to your organization, giving you operational control of the service. The service would continue to be fully operational and your organization would incur Azure consumption costs direct from Microsoft. What s the effect of data transfer on my consumption-based pricing? It depends. If you were storing several hundred terabytes and retrieving that full volume of data in a month then data transfer costs would be a large portion of the monthly consumption bill. However, it is rare for an archive system to see more than 5-7% retrieval in any given month. The truth is, data transfer costs are quite minor. Archive data is typically low-retrieval. And even with high data transfer HubStor is still cost advantageous over in-house storage and legacy archives. The following blog post provides examples of data transfer costs: http://www.hubstor.net/the-truth-about-cloud-storage-data-transfer-costs/
