elearning Training Material Golden Gate University How To Create and Post a Video in an Assignment Introduction Kaltura Video for Moodle allows students to: Upload videos to the course to share with the instructor and/or other students Create videos and other multimedia like screencasts and audio files Kaltura videos can be inserted in the following places: As an assignment to create and submit videos for a grade In a Discussion posting This guide covers how to submit a Kaltura Video to an Assignment. Videos submitted to Assignments are only viewable by the instructor. Types of Videos There are two methods to submit video depending on the type of video. 1. You can upload a video from your computer to your Assignment. This method is for videos created with a video camera, your phone or tablet, Zoom web conferencing, or other video resources that already exist. 2. You can create your own video or audio file using the Kaltura Desktop Recorder, then submit it to your Assignment. This guide covers both methods. 1 Click the appropriate Assignment link in your class. 2 Click Add Media Submission. 3 Click the Add New button on the upper right side to choose a media type: Media Upload upload a video from your computer Desktop Recorder create video, screencast, or audio recordings Kaltura Video Assignment Guide for Students Page 1 of 9
Instructions for recording each media type are detailed on the following pages of this Guide. When creating a recording using the Desktop Recorder for the first time, it is strongly recommended to create a short one-minute test recording and go through the process of uploading it first. This can help identify any issues you may have without the frustration of losing your work! If you have difficulty, contact the elearning Help Desk during business hours at 415-369-5251. 4 Method 1: Media Upload Use this method to upload a video you have already made using your phone, tablet, computer webcam or other device. Before proceeding, make sure the video file is stored on your computer. Click Media Upload, then click the Choose a file to upload button. Browse to a video on your computer and click it, then click Open. Fill in Name and Tags (required). Do not fill in Description, as it does not display to users. To create a Tag, type in the word or words for the tag, and then hit Enter. IMPORTANT: in the Tags field, enter your name and your class (example: Jane Smith, ACCTG 101). After typing in each tag, hit the Enter key and the tag will set in the Tag field, as shown in this screen shot. Then click Save. When you see the message Your changes have been saved at the top of the page, click the Back to Browse and Embed link. 5 Find the video you just uploaded in the Media list, and click the Select button to the right of it. 6 Review your video. If you are happy with it, click Submit Media. If you want to change it, click Replace Media. Kaltura Video Assignment Guide for Students Page 3 of 9
Method 2: Desktop Recorder To use the Desktop Recorder to create videos and other media files, you will need to download the Desktop Recorder app to your computer. This is a one-time operation that only takes a few minutes. After downloading, you can record media at any time from your computer, whether or not you are logged in to your Moodle class. 7 First time ONLY: Download the Desktop Recorder From the Add New menu (step 3 above), click Desktop Recorder. 8 Click Download for Windows or Download for Mac, depending on your computer type. The Desktop Recorder program will download to your computer. 9 Click on the program to install to your computer. You ll see a note that it s being configured. 10 Close the popup Download Window by clicking the X in the upper right corner. You will no longer need to use the Desktop Recorder option, or even be logged into the class, to record video. You will only need to log in and click Add Media Submission after you have recorded your video and are ready to submit it to the Assignment. Kaltura Video Assignment Guide for Students Page 4 of 9
Going Forward: Using the Desktop Recorder 11 You can open the Desktop Recorder either by going back to Step 7 and clicking Desktop Recorder, or by opening the Kaltura Capturespace Desktop Recorder from the Start menu of your computer. or 12 The Desktop Recorder will open. You can record 4 types of media: Screen record your computer screen with your voice Screen & Webcam record your computer screen with a webcam inset Webcam record yourself on your webcam Voice record an audio file The next pages of this guide will cover each type of media. A Webcam Recording 1a Click on Webcam in the Record tab. 2a 3a The Kaltura Recorder will activate your webcam and begin recording. You can pause by pressing ALT+P or clicking on the Pause button. Click ALT+P or the Resume button to continue. When you are finished recording, click Done. final video. Your Webcam recording will open in the Editing window. Here you can Trim or Chop your recording. Trim mark frames at the beginning and/or end of your recording to delete from the final video. Chop mark frames in the middle of your recording to delete from the Click either Trim or Chop and move the blue selection tab(s) to select frames. The frames to be deleted will turn dark. You also have the option to add a Title slide to the beginning of your recording, and/or a Credits slide to the end of your recording. 4a Click Apply to preview your changes. Click Done when you are satisfied with your edits. If you have made edits, this Upload Options screen will appear. Edit Original Recording means that only the edited version of the video is saved. Create New Recording saves an unedited version and an edited version of the video. Cancel Recording saves only the unedited version of the video. If you haven t made edits, you may simply see the Upload Options title and tag screen after clicking Done. Kaltura Video Assignment Guide for Students Page 6 of 9
5a Give your recording a Title. The Description field is optional and won t show on your final recording. Tag your recording with your Name and your Course, with a comma in between. Then click Upload. When your video is uploaded, you will see a notification that says Upload Success. Click Close to close the window. 6a To submit the video you ve created, follow steps 1, 2, 5, and 6 at the beginning of this guide. B Screen Recording 1b Click on Screen in the Record tab. 2b Select whether to record the entire screen or only a selected area. If you'd like to record the entire screen select Full Screen. If you'd like to record a specific area of the screen, click on Select Area. To select an area drag your mouse over the area you want to capture and release. Select Cancel to go back to the main screen. 3b When ready, click on Record to start the recording. While recording, click Alt+P to pause the recording and bring up the control bar and drawing tools. You can also click the Kaltura icon in your Task Bar at the bottom of your computer screen to bring up the control bar without pausing the recording. Alt+D will bring up the drawing tools without pausing the recording. The drawing tools can be used to draw freely on the screen during the recording. You can stress important points by drawing a circle around them, or highlight important aspects. Anytime during a recording, you can click on Draw to use the drawing tools. Click Done when finished recording. 4b Follow steps 3a through 6a to edit, upload, and submit the Screen video to your Assignment. C 1c Screen and Webcam Recording Click on Screen & Webcam in the Record tab. 2c Follow the directions in Step 2b to choose an area of your screen to record. This time, when recording starts, your webcam will be activated and will show in the upper right hand side of your recording area. 3c Follow steps 3a through 6a to edit, upload, and submit the Screen and Webcam video to your Assignment.
