INSTITUTION OF CIVIL ENGINEERS ICE is a UKbased organisation with a global engagement. HQ is in London Over 80,000 members in over 150 countries, 20% of which live and work outside the UK 79 ICE Representatives 12 UK Regional Committees 30 International Regional Committees (including Joint Groups)

Professionally Qualified Membership Three Professionally Qualified grades: Technician: Technician Member registered as an Engineering Technician (Eng Tech TMICE) Incorporated: Member registered as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng MICE): often referred elsewhere as Technologist Chartered: Member registered as a Chartered Engineer (CEng MICE)

Stage 1: Benchmark Educational Base Chartered Civil Engineer: level of qualification 11 (e) for the purposes of recognition under Directive 2005/36/EC, Academic qualification recognised under the Washington Accord Qualifications assessed as equivalent to an accredited UK 4-year MEng degree in civil engineering = Bologna Second Cycle (Masters),

Stage 2: Initial Professional Development Initial Professional Development (IPD) is workplace experience that develops competence: IPD is defined by ICE s 15 Development Objectives (ICE 3005) There is no time-limit for IPD For a Chartered Civil Engineer: typically 3 to 6 years post academic qualification

Stage 3: Professional Review At Professional Review the candidate is required to demonstrate, 9 attributes: Engineering Knowledge and Understanding Engineering Application Management & Leadership Independent Judgment and Responsibility Commercial Ability Health, Safety & Welfare Sustainable Development Interpersonal Skills and Communication Professional commitment

ICE s European Members More than 2,000 Members practicing and working in 39 countries across Europe Top countries represented: Ireland France Cyprus Spain Germany Over 50% non-uk nationals: Irish, Greek, Cypriot, Italian and Spanish

Application of EU Directive 2005/36/EC for civil engineers in the UK The profession of civil engineer is not regulated in the UK. Membership of ICE is therefore not required in order to work in the UK. The protected titles of CEng MICE, IEng MICE and EngTech TMICE are regulated under the Directive. The Directive does not guarantee automatic registration with ICE. ICE assesses the applicant s academic qualifications and professional experience against its own standards and criteria. This year, to date, ICE has received 37 applications:

Chartered Civil Engineers Beyond Europe ICE has over 14,300 members living and working outside of Europe 2,600 Middle East and Africa 1,500 Americas 10,200 Asia Pacific Mutual Exemption Agreements: Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, and South Africa

Chartered Civil Engineers beyond Europe Agreements of Cooperation: Over 40 including: Bahamas, Jordan, Brazil, China, Tanzania Growth areas: China mainland (235) 20% India (720) 17% Australasia (1560) 8.5%

Washington Accord Signed 1989 an agreement among bodies responsible for accrediting engineering degree programs. substantial equivalency of programs for meeting the academic requirements for entry to the practice of engineering at Chartered Engineer level Washington Accord Signatories: Australia, Canada, Hong Kong (95), Chinese Taipei (07), Ireland, Japan (05), Korea (07), Malaysia (09), New Zealand, Singapore (06), South Africa (99), Turkey (11), UK and USA
