SDL MultiTerm 2011 SP2 Overview SDL MultiTerm 2011 SP2 is a suite of terminology management applications that can be used standalone as well as in conjunction with SDL Trados Studio 2011 SP2. It offers a scaleable solution covering all scenarios from Freelance to Enterprise with one product line. Whether you access your terminology via a desktop client or Internet browser, SDL MultiTerm allows you to manage everything from one location and its integration with SDL Trados Studio allows you to ensure that you are using consistent terminology as your content is being created and translated. Important: SDL MultiTerm product suite includes the following client components: MultiTerm Desktop, MultiTerm Widget, MultiTerm Administrator, MultiTerm Convert. MultiTerm Extract is available separately on request after purchasing this terminology extraction component. The server components (MultiTerm Server and Team, MultiTerm Online and shared SDL server components) are now included in SDL Studio GroupShare. For information on the server components, refer to the SDL GroupShare release notes. For more information, see http://www.sdl.com/en/language-technology/products/terminologymanagement/. 2 What s New 2.1 Term recognition two-letter terms MultiTerm can now recognize two-letter terms when used in SDL Trados Studio 2011. 2.2 Enhanced term recognition in CJK languages The term recognition engine for Chinese, Japanese and Korean has been enhanced considerably. It recognizes many more terms. 2.3 Ad-hoc entries When a new term is added in SDL Trados Studio 2011 SP2, it will be marked as an ad-hoc entry so that terminology workers can clearly see when a term was created directly in Studio. An ad-hoc entry is one that was added to MultiTerm from a different application. You can then search through a termbase in SDL MultiTerm for a list of entries that were added from Trados Studio. 2.4 Enhanced custom exporting You can now define custom cross references when using entry number-based export. 2.5 MultiTerm Widget With SDL MultiTerm 2009 SP4, SDL introduced the SDL MultiTerm Widget. This is a small application that resides in your Windows tray area and can be used to quickly look up terminology. It can search terms from local or remote termbases as well as Internet search engines such as Wikipedia and works with virtually any Windows text application or browser. It also works with translation and language tools such as SDL Trados Studio and SDL Passolo. 2.6 Side-by-side compatibility changes SDL MultiTerm 2011 SP2 can run side-by-side with older versions of SDL MultiTerm on the same machine. Since the underlying termbase format has not changed, SDL MultiTerm 2011 SP2 fully supports SDL MultiTerm 2009 and vice versa, including connecting to server-based termbases using SDL MultiTerm Server 2009 SP3. It is also fully compatible with all versions of SDL Trados Studio 2011 and 2009. For more information on compatibility with other SDL products and versions, see the Compatibility section. 2.7 Robustness enhancements This release includes a number of bug fixes and performance enhancements. For example, offering more stable support for long termbase names and addressing issues with term recognition and adding and editing entries from within SDL Trados and SDL MultiTerm. MultiTerm Convert has also undergone a number of stability enhancements. SDL MultiTerm 2011 SP2 Release Notes Page 5

Installation Note: If you install SDL MultiTerm 2011 SP2 and also have SDL Trados Studio 2011 installed, you must upgrade Trados Studio to the 2011 SP2 version to be able to use both applications in tandem. 3.1 Prerequisites Hardware: SDL MultiTerm 2011 SP2 requires a PC with a 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64- bit (x64) processor and 1 GB RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit). It needs a mouse or similar pointing device. It needs approx. 300 MB of hard disk space for installation. Display settings should be at least 1024 by 768 pixels, and 256 colors. Platforms: SDL MultiTerm 2011 SP2 runs on the latest service-packed versions of Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 2003 Server and Windows 2008 Server. Earlier operating systems such as Windows 2000, Windows NT, Windows 98, Windows XP pre-sp3 and Windows 2003 pre-sp2 are not supported. Software: MultiTerm Convert requires Microsoft Excel 2002-2010 for direct conversion of XLS or XLSX files to MultiTerm XML. MultiTerm supports direct integration with Microsoft Word through the multiterm9.dotm file. This requires Microsoft Word 2007 2010 to be installed. Microsoft Word is also required for optimal processing of Word or RTF-based files. 64-bit versions of Microsoft Word are not yet supported. MultiTerm Extract requires Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel and Trados 6.5 or higher for the direct extraction of terms from PowerPoint and Excel files. Browsers: Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 is the minimum requirement for SDL MultiTerm Desktop. Microsoft Explorer 7 or Mozilla Firefox 3 are the minimum requirements for SDL MultiTerm Online. MultiTerm Online also supports the latest version of Google Chrome. For more information on the prerequisites for installing SDL MultiTerm 2011 SP2, see the SDL MultiTerm 2011 SP2 client installation guide. 3.2 Install and upgrade (licensing) process Ensure that you have administrator rights and that you have no other software running whilst installing SDL MultiTerm. A full list of the software, including third party software installed with this application, is listed in the SDL MultiTerm 2011 SP2 installation guide. The version number and installer version of this release is 9. The installer can be downloaded from your SDL My Account at https://oos.sdl.com/asp/products/ssl/account/. SDL MultiTerm 2011 SP2 Release Notes Page 6

Follow the instructions for installation in the SDL MultiTerm client installation guide. If you are upgrading servers, consult the MultiTerm online help at http://producthelp.sdl.com/sdl_multiterm_2011/client_en/sdl_multiterm.htm and browse to the section SDL MultiTerm Server Console -> Help for Server Upgrades. MultiTerm Extract installation: You must have MultiTerm installed before installing MultiTerm Extract. The installation program that installs the Sun Java Runtime Environment 1.6 by default activates the Java Runtime Environment in Internet Explorer. If this represents a security problem for you, you can deactivate again after installation. Do this in the Advanced tab of the Internet Options dialog box in Internet Explorer. The MultiTerm installers detect whether the required Microsoft.NET version is available on the target computer. If it is not, it will automatically be downloaded and installed. Installation should then continue. If it does not, double-click the Setup.exe to restart the installation. A reboot may be required after installation of Microsoft.NET. See http://kb.sdl.com/ for the latest information on resolving installation issues. 3.3 Compatibility SDL software If you install SDL MultiTerm 2011 SP2 and also have SDL Trados Studio 2011 installed, you must upgrade SDL Trados Studio to the 2011 SP2 version to be able to use both applications in tandem. SDL MultiTerm 2011 SP2 runs alongside SDL MultiTerm 2007 and 2009. If you wish to use the 2009 version, you need to close the 2011 version and then call the older version up manually from the Start menu. We generally recommend that you use the latest version. SDL MultiTerm 2011 SP2 is compatible with SDL MultiTerm 2009 SP3 Server and SDL MultiTerm Server 2011. Note: SDL MultiTerm Extract uses the common SDL Trados File Filter Framework. Whilst SDL MultiTerm Extract ships its own filter framework, we recommend that you always have the latest version of SDL Trados 2011 installed (this includes SDL Trados 2007 components that are key for MultiTerm Extract) to profit from the most recent changes and additions. SDL MultiTerm Extract uses the SDL Trados 2007 Suite API to access tmw files. Install SDL Trados 2007 Suite for projects where you directly access tmw files. SDL MultiTerm Widget 2009 and 2011 can be installed on the same machine. Both entries will appear in the Start menu and the 2011 version is the default version. SDL MultiTerm 2011 SP2 is compatible with: SDL TMS 2011 if you deploy TMS and MultiTerm 2011 on different servers (and keep the existing MultiTerm 2009 SP3 client on your TMS server). SDL TMS 2011 SP2 if you want to deploy TMS and MultiTerm 2011 on the same server. SDL MultiTerm 2011 SP2 is compatible with SDL Global AMS 2010 SP2. The following multimedia formats are supported: BMP, JPG, GIF, ICO, PNG, WMF, AVI. SDL MultiTerm 2011 SP2 Release Notes Page 7

.4 Supported releases On the release of SDL MultiTerm 2011 SP2, we will continue to support SDL MultiTerm 2009. As an exception to SDL policy, we also confirm continued support for the SDL MultiTerm 2007 product suite, which we consider as mature (and not yet retired) products. Mature releases are still supported. Hotfixes to all three generations are released as and when required and service packs at the discretion of SDL. With the next major release of SDL MultiTerm, we will consider moving SDL MultiTerm 2007 to a retired state. Retired means that this release only qualifies for limited technical assistance subject to the availability of trained personnel and resources. No further service packs or hotfixes will be issued. With this release we are phasing out support for SDL PhraseFinder and Microsoft Word 2003 or earlier. 3.5 Behavior changes There are no special considerations in terms of behavior changes in SDL MultiTerm 2011 SP2 compared to SDL MultiTerm 2009. 3.6 Localization The user interface for SDL MultiTerm 2011 SP2 is localized into the following languages: German French Spanish Japanese Simplified Chinese The online help for SDL MultiTerm 2011 is localized into the following languages : German French Japanese Simplified Chinese SDL MultiTerm 2011 SP2 Release Notes Page 8

Resolved Issues SDL MultiTerm 2011 SP2 incorporates all cumulative updates that were done for SDL MultiTerm 2009. Description If you install SDL MultiTerm 2011 SP2 and also have SDL Trados Studio 2011 installed, you must upgrade SDL Trados Studio to the 2011 SP2 version to be able to use both applications in tandem. Users have reported intermittent stability and freezing issues with SDL MultiTerm 2009 when using the term editor. This has been resolved in SDL MultiTerm 2011. A problem has been identified whereby Windows XP will not shut down after installation of SDL MultiTerm 2009 SP4 or SDL MultiTerm 2011 if Trados 2007 is installed on the same machine. This has been resolved by removing Synergy from the autostart menu. See KB article 3590 for more information. A number of performance problems with the hard filter have been resolved. Vastly increased robustness when using MultiTerm within SDL Trados Studio. To allow SDL Trados TagEditor from SDL Trados 2007 to connect to SDL MultiTerm 2011 termbases, TagEditor's version check has been updated to recognise SDL MultiTerm 2011. For more information and to download a patch, see the SDL KB. Optimized search for performance gain and faster search capability within MultiTerm. Opening and editing an entry in MultiTerm Online containing special characters causes corruption and affects the desktop experience. This has now been resolved. SDL MultiTerm 2011 SP2 Release Notes Page 9

Known Issues Description If your entry structure allows fields embedded within fields, the built-in layout definitions cannot yet display the values of the deeper embedded fields. Adapt the layouts accordingly. For example, create a duplicate of a built-in layout and modify it to display the embedded field. Displaying multimedia files fails if you have Internet Explorer 7 installed. You can use Internet Explorer 8 or higher to resolve this problem. MultiTerm Widget: Capturing text from within images may fail if the image is embedded in an HTML page. In this case the URL of the image is captured but not the text. This is a problem with a third party library that the widget uses to capture the text. MultiTerm Widget: Optical character recognition techniques to capture text from within images is based on a third party library. This does not currently provide sufficient support for right-to-left bidirectional languages such as Arabic or Hebrew. MultiTerm Convert: MultiTerm supports Excel 2002 2010. Users of Excel 97 or 2000 should save their Excel file as a tab-delimited text file, open the file in a Unicode text editor, save the file again as UTF-8 and then follow the workflow for spreadsheet and database exchange formats. This is explained in detail in the online help. MultiTerm Convert: Automatic attribute fields in a MultiTerm 5 (MTW) file are converted to the corresponding history fields in the MultiTerm XML file. However, to assign history fields to descriptive fields in the new MultiTerm 2011 termbase, you must explicitly select the Keep history option for each descriptive field in the termbase definition that requires a history. This option can be found in the Termbase Wizard in MultiTerm and MultiTerm Administrator. MS Word integration: If you add an entry from Word and add the segments from your Word document as a content example, the following may occur: context sentences are not copied from the document if there is an image immediately after the segment. This is a limitation in Word s sentence detector. Either fill in the context sentence manually in the Submit to termbase dialog or remove the images. MS Word integration: MS Word integration may not work if you de-install SDL Trados Studio. In this case, re-install the SDL MultiTerm Core Component by running the SDL MultiTerm installer again. MultiTerm Extract: Extracting terms against a remote termbase fails when using the super user login. Use another login. MultiTerm Administrator: You can create new organizations within MultiTerm Administrator. However, removing them is not yet supported from within MultiTerm Administrator. Use the Web-base administration pages for managing organizations. Uninstalling: After you uninstall some components of MultiTerm, the uninstall MultiTerm program, Remove suite of products, disappears. SDL MultiTerm 2011 SP2 Release Notes Page 10
