Kurzweil 3000 When you launch Kurzweil, you will get the following screen. If you want to scan a document, choose Kurzweil 3000 B/W Professional 12.0 to scan in black and white OR Kurzweil 3000 Color Professional 12.0 to scan a document with colour. If you don t need to do any scanning, choose Kurzweil 3000 LearnStation 12.0 Kurzweil can be slow to load, as it has to verify the license availability over the Internet, so please be patient. Accessing the Library of text books/novels (Curriculum Resources and Textbooks that are ready to use with Kurzweil) A number of curriculum resources and text books are already scanned and ready to use in Kurzweil and are available through the Library. To access the library, click on File/Open from Library from within the Kurzweil software. A window will open and you should see the word Library - double click on it and it will expand to show a number of folders named by grade level. Double click on the folder of your choice until you find what you are looking for. For example, if you are looking for the Grade 8 Health book, double click on the Grade 8 folder and within it you will find the Health folder. Finally double clicking on the Health folder will bring up all of the chapters of the health book. Click on the chapter of your choice and then click the Open button and the chapter will load. The Toolbars Click this button to get Kurzweil to start reading/turns into a pause button when Kurzweil is reading Highlight a word and click this button to look up its meaning Click this button to view a thumbnail of each page in the document. Click on any of the thumbnails to jump to a page Click this to change the reading voice Paul and Kate are the two most human sounding choices Reading Mode- Continuous means that Kurzweil will begin reading and read continuously until you hit the pause button. Sentence means that Kurzweil will highlight each sentence as it reads. If you change the reading mode to Self Paced and the reading unit is set to Sentence, Kurzweil will read a sentence and then automatically stop reading when it completes the sentence. Other options here are paragraph, line, word. This is the reading speed measure in words per minute. Between 110 and 120 is best for most people. These are your page controls up arrow will move you forward and the down arrow will move you backwards. The button with the 1 on it will take you quickly to page 1, The button with the 2 will take you quickly to last page in the document The number in the white box is the page you are currently on.
Test Taking In order for students to respond to questions on a test/activity sheet, they must insert Text Notes. Text Notes appear as little orange boxes, Students click inside these to type their answers To insert a Text Note click on the big A in the toolbar seen below, or click on Tools in the menu bar, then Note and Add Text Note Recording your answer with the Voice Note Tool have to have a microphone plugged into the computer. Click on the Voice Note tool, click somewhere on the test (wherever the student clicks on the test is where the speaker icon will appear to indicate they have a recorded answer). Clicking on the test will open up the recording window. Click the button with the microphone, the recording starts, click the stop button to finish recording. Click ok. Double click the speaker icon to hear what the student recorded. If the document that has been scanned includes blanks and has enough white space for students to answer directly on screen, Kurzweil will locate the blanks and put a text not in front of each blank. To do this, click on Tools and Fill in the Blank option. To import a test that has been created in MS Word Open up one of the professional licenses of Kurzweil, then follow these three steps 1. Open the test up in MS Word or Word Perfect 2. Choose File/ Print 3. From the list of printers choose KESI Virtual Printer and select Print (This will send the test to Kurzweil - when you click back on Kurzweil, it may ask you to select the page range you want - just click ok to this and then the test will appear in Kurzweil.) Multiple Choice - Use the Red Circle or Blue Circle options under Tools/Highlight/Red Circle or Blue Circle to make your selection for multiple choice questions. Drag and Drop Words Double click word (word becomes highlighted in light blue) and then drag and drop it in the correct blank.
Digitizing/Scanning materials to be read back Kurzweil will not scan handwritten material Kurzweil will open PDF files. To Open up a pdf file make sure you are logged into one of the Professional licenses of Kurzweil (see image on first page of this document), click File/Open, browse to find the file, select it and click open. Kurzweil will apply its reader recognition to each page so that it can read the content back. Be patient as it does this. It takes a few seconds on each page to complete this. The new photocopiers in schools can be used to scan books/printed materials. This is a much faster method of scanning than using a traditional flatbed scanner. Using the photocopier, the book is scanned and saved as a pdf file which can be opened in Kurzweil. Depending on the type of photocopier your school has, the pdf file can be saved to a USB stick or emailed to you. The instructions below are for using a traditional flatbed scanner: Place your document/book on the flatbed of the scanner and click the Scan button on the button bar of Kurzweil software It may take a few minutes for the scanner to start. You should hear the scanner starting and then the item you are scanning will appear on the screen within the Kurzweil software. A few things to note about scanning: Double sided pages do not scan well The better the quality of the item you are scanning, the better Kurzweil will read the text If you are scanning a novel/book that is small enough that both pages of the book will fit on the flatbed of the scanner, use the Two Page Scanning Mode. To do this, Click on Scan in the menubar of Kurzweil and choose Two Page Mode. This will allow you to scan two pages at one time, but Kurzweil will break them up as separate pages so that they are easier for students to read. Scan/Scan Repeatedly - counts down between pages scanned (saves you from having to click the scan button each time) Save the document for future use: Save the document to whatever location is most convenient for you a USB stick, the hard drive of the computer, etc. Saving it to the s: drive will allow students to access what you have scanned. Getting an Error message when trying to Scan: Click on Scan in the menubar, then Scanner Setup, and finally Select Scanner. Make sure the right scanner is selected from the drop down list in the Select Scanner window.
Audio Files - To create an audio file from a document that has been scanned or imported into Kurzweil In Kurzweil, open the document you want converted into an audio file. File/ Audio Files/Create Audio Files. Make your choices from the window that appears. Audio files get saved in the Folder on the desktop called Kurzweil 3000 Output Audio.
