BEHRINGER MOTÖR49/61 Keyboards Preset Dumping to/from Mac This document is separated into the following parts: General Information.. page 1 Important Note.. page 1 About SysEx.. page 1 Preparation Setting up the virtual MIDI ports...page 2 Dumping from MOTÖR > to Mac (TX)......page 3 Dumping from Mac > to MOTÖR (RX).....page 7 General Information: This guide will introduce you to the options to dump a single user preset or all user presets from your MOTÖR keyboard to the computer and back. All descriptions below are done in OPERATION MODE MIDI. This document explains the SysEx dumping for Mac users, using the freeware SysEx Librarian. (Another document explains the dumping for Windows users, supported by the freeware MIDI-OX.) Important Note: You can only dump from the MOTÖR to a computer when at least one user preset had been stored inside the keyboard memory. About SysEx: SysEx is an abbreviation for System Exclusive MIDI messages, a part of the MIDI specification. In the past it has been used by many manufacturers to control very specific and detailed parameters of their MIDI hardware (e.g. sound modules, effect units, and other MIDI equipment). SysEx messages are addressed to a specific device; each manufacturer has a unique identifier, so that all other connected MIDI devices can ignore such a SysEx message which is not dedicated to them. Today, SysEx messages are mostly used for dumping the memory of MIDI devices, to archive the internal user memory to a computer, as a single short file with the suffix.syx. It doesn t matter if such a SysEx message is sent via a USB port or a DIN MIDI port, as long as it follows the MIDI standard. In our case, it is used for dumping either a single user preset or all user presets from the MOTÖR to a PC or Mac, via USB cable, and back again of course. Page 1

Preparation Setting up the virtual MIDI ports: First you have to assign the correct virtual MIDI ports in your MIDI dump program: 1. Connect your MOTÖR keyboard to your Mac via USB cable, power on the unit, and set the keyboard into OPERATION MODE MIDI. 2. Make sure that your MOTÖR keyboard has been recognized correctly in your Audio-MIDI-Setup > MIDI Studio-window. The view should look similar to this: 3. Get the freeware SysEx Librarian from the internet (just enter the name in a web search engine to get the right page). Download the latest version for your OS X version, install, and then open it. 4. On the top area of the SysEx Librarian window there is a selection field for Where to send SyEx data. (By default there should appear here: Act as a source for other programs.) 5. Please select here Port 1 of your MOTÖR keyboard. Now the virtual MIDI I/O ports of your MOTÖR keyboard are assigned. Page 2

In parallel, the Mac screen shows the dumping progress by increasing numbers. 8 Shortly you will see in the display that the dump was successful. Note: The time it takes depends on the amount of internal MOTÖR memory used, and it can be between seconds and minutes. Page 4

(in one shot) > to Mac When the dump has finished, the MOTÖR display returns to the last menu. EDIT > 1. PRESETS. > to Mac 9 see left When the dump has finished, you will see a larger KB number on the screen and no more progress. Dumping from Mac > to MOTÖR (RX): This chapter will describe step-by-step how to receive (RX) MOTÖR SysEx files, sent from your Mac. Important Note: When performing the ALL dump from the Mac to the MOTÖR, all internal data of your keyboard will be erased and overwritten by the information from your All Dump file. (in one shot) < from Mac First of all, make sure that you have selected the port 1 of your MOTÖR as the destination. < from Mac 1 see left Go to File > Add to Library 2 see left Browse to the location where your All Dump file is located. 3 Browse to the location where your Single Dump file is located. You will now see a progress bar in SysEx Librarian. 7 Very shortly, a progress bar followed by a Done window, will appear in SysEx Librarian. Thereafter the default window will appear again: In parallel you will see the UPDATA... - screen on the MOTÖR display. 8 Please note that dumping a single preset will usually take less than a second. Therefore the MOTÖR display will show this screen only for a very short time: IMPORTANT NOTE: The SysEx Librarian indication will finish earlier than the UPDATA screen on MOTÖR. But the dumping process is not finished until the UPDATA-indication on the MOTÖR display disappears. Page 8

(in one shot) < from Mac When the dump has finished, SUCCESS will shortly be indicated. < from Mac 9 Now the display indication changes to the screen shown below. If you want to save the just-received single dump preset, select YES (otherwise: NO) by turning the DATA knob, and confirming by pressing the DATA knob. To abort, you can alternatively press any MENU button, e.g. PRESET again. Congratulations! After the successful update, all internal data of your keyboard will have been erased and overwritten by the information from your newly received All Dump file. 10 Now you can select the destination by turning the DATA knob. You can save to a free location ( Empty ), or overwrite an existing user preset (its current name is shown). 11 The display will ask for a final confirmation: Select YES and press the DATA knob to store the newly received preset. Page 9

(in one shot) < from Mac < from Mac 12 SUCCESS will shortly be indicated. 13 Now the display will return to the last preset location (in this example Preset Number 4), before the dump/save procedure began. 14 Congratulations! The newly received single preset is now successfully stored in your desired memory location. 15 Note: To check your new preset, just use the PRESET menu (PRESET button) or the PRESET OVERVIEW menu (EDIT > 1. PRESETS > 4. PRESET OVERVIEW) to scroll through the list and load it. Page 10
