All descriptions below are done in OPERATION MODE MIDI. This document explains the SysEx dumping for Mac users, using the freeware SysEx Librarian. (Another document explains the dumping for Windows users, supported by the freeware MIDI-OX.) Important Note: You can only dump from the MOTÖR to a computer when at least one user preset had been stored inside the keyboard memory. About SysEx: SysEx is an abbreviation for System Exclusive MIDI messages, a part of the MIDI specification. In the past it has been used by many manufacturers to control very specific and detailed parameters of their MIDI hardware (e.g. sound modules, effect units, and other MIDI equipment). SysEx messages are addressed to a specific device; each manufacturer has a unique identifier, so that all other connected MIDI devices can ignore such a SysEx message which is not dedicated to them. Today, SysEx messages are mostly used for dumping the memory of MIDI devices, to archive the internal user memory to a computer, as a single short file with the suffix.syx. It doesn t matter if such a SysEx message is sent via a USB port or a DIN MIDI port, as long as it follows the MIDI standard. In our case, it is used for dumping either a single user preset or all user presets from the MOTÖR to a PC or Mac, via USB cable, and back again of course. Page 1
Preparation Setting up the virtual MIDI ports: First you have to assign the correct virtual MIDI ports in your MIDI dump program: 1. Connect your MOTÖR keyboard to your Mac via USB cable, power on the unit, and set the keyboard into OPERATION MODE MIDI. 2. Get the freeware SysEx Librarian from the internet (just enter the name in a web search engine to get the right page). Download the latest version for your OS X version, install, and then open it. 4. On the top area of the SysEx Librarian window there is a selection field for Where to send SyEx data. (By default there should appear here: Act as a source for other programs.) 5. Please select here Port 1 of your MOTÖR keyboard. Now the virtual MIDI I/O ports of your MOTÖR keyboard are assigned. Page 2
