The HP23 can be used in many different applicatins such as the spt check measurement f HVAC installatins and manufacturing prcesses, the measurement f seeds, pharmaceutical pwders and ther materials in bulk, the measurement f paper stacks and rlls, etc. The HP23 is als a calibratr that can be used t read and adjust ther instruments frm ROTRONIC that are based n the AirChip 3000 technlgy. Each f the tw prbe inputs can be cnfigured t accept either a digital HygrClip 2 humidity-temperature prbes (factry default) r an analg prbe measuring any signal such as barmetric pressure, air velcity, etc (user cnfiguratin). The HP23 has a real time clck t keep track f the date and time when recrding data and is pwered with either a standard 9 V alkaline battery r with a rechargeable battery. The HP23 features tw distinct perating mdes: Standard Mde: in this mde the HP23 can be used as a general purpse indicatr, as a data lgger r as a calibratr fr verifying and adjusting ther instruments frm ROTRONIC. The standard mde ffers the fllwing functinality (availability f sme f the functins depends n the HP23 mdel): Display f Measured and Calculated Values Relative humidity and temperature data measured by up t tw HygrClip 2 digital prbes Calculated humidity parameter such as dew / frst pint r ther, fr up t tw HygrClip 2 prbes Difference between the values measured by tw prbes (the prbes must be f the same type: digital r analg) Up t tw user defined calculatins such as the difference between the temperature and the dew pint measured by a prbe, the average f the temperature measured by tw prbes, etc. Any parameter measured by up t tw analg prbes (user defined) Manual Data Capture T facilitate the spt checking f humidity and temperature cnditins, the HP23 features eight data bins (nn-vlatile memry) each capable f retaining up t 250 humidity temperature values measured by a HygrClip 2 prbe (analg prbe data is nt recrded). Each recrd is stamped fr date and time. The data bins can be given a user defined name. Prbe selectin, bin selectin, data capture and data viewing are dne frm the keypad. Data Lgging The HP23 can autmatically recrd up t 10,000 humidity-temperature value pairs measured by a single HygrClip 2 prbe r up t 10,000 values measured by a single 1-channel analg prbe. Each recrd is stamped fr date and time. The calculated parameter (HygrClip 2 prbe nly) cannt be recrded. When recrding data frm tw prbes at the same time, the recrding capacity per prbe is cut in half. The HP23 features tw data lgging mde: start-stp (recrding ends when the memry is full) and lp (when the memry is full, the ldest recrd is dumped t make rm fr a new recrd) Except fr the lg file frmat, all lg settings can be selected frm the keypad. Aw Mde: this specialized mde is available nly with mdel HP23-AW and is used fr measuring the water activity (Aw) f prduct samples and materials in bulk such as pwders, seeds, etc. When set t perate in the water activity mde, the HP23 autmatically displays humidity as Aw (1.000 aw = 100 %RH). The Aw Mde ffers the fllwing ptins: Accelerated water activity measurement (AwQuick): permits measuring the water activity f mst prducts in typically 5 minutes. The measurement starts simultaneusly fr bth prbe inputs and is ended autmatically. Cnventinal water activity measurement (AwE): the measurement starts simultaneusly fr bth prbe inputs. The HP23 autmatically detects full equilibrium cnditins and ends the measurement at that time. Data lgging and prbe adjustment are available in the water activity mde, but when using these functins humidity is shwn as %RH as ppsed t aw. The ther standard mde functins are nt available. The HP23 is available with a wide assrtment f HygrClip 2 humidity-temperature prbes t meet almst any requirement. The HygrClip 2 prbes feature well prven, durable sensrs. Digital signal prcessing ensures cnsistent prduct perfrmance and als facilitates the task f field maintenance with features such as ptentimeter free digital calibratin. Depending n the prbe mdel, the HP23 can measure cnditins within the range f 0 t 100 %RH and -100 t 200 C (-148 t 392 F). The temperature perating range f the HP23 electrnics is limited t -10 60 C. The ability fr the user t easily update bth the HP23 and HygrClip 2 prbe firmware means that the indicatr and prbes can be kept up-t-date regarding any future functinality imprvement. 2009-2014; Rtrnic AG E-M-HP23-V2_14

Hwever, sme f the settings and access t sme f the functins requires cnnecting the HP23 t the USB prt f a PC running the HW4 sftware versin 3.0 r higher. Fr instructins see the fllwing HW4 manual: E-M-HW4v3-F2-012 2.2 Pwer supply The HP23 uses either a standard 9V alkaline battery (factry default) r a 9V rechargeable Ni-MH battery (user cnfiguratin). The rechargeable battery is charged either by cnnecting the service cnnectr t a USB prt r by plugging a battery charger (part number AC1212) t the service cnnectr. The typical charge current is 17 ma. Imprtant: the HP23 is shipped with a regular 9V battery and is factry preset with the battery charge functin turned ff. If yu plan n using a rechargeable battery, yu shuld turn n the battery charge functin (see Functin Menu Settings). Befre using a regular battery again, be sure t turn ff the battery charge functin. Trying t charge a regular battery may cause the battery t burst and may damage the instrument. With the default display refresh rate is 1 secnd the prbes are permanently pwered. T cnserve battery pwer, the display refresh rate can be set frm the HP23 keypad t ne f the fllwing: 10 sec, 1 min r 10 min. (MENU > Device Settings > DataUpdate). The autnmy f the HP23 with a fully charged battery depends n factrs such as the display backlight, the number f prbes, the display refresh rate, the functins being used, etc. As an indicatin, the typical current cnsumptin is as fllws: 6.5mA with 1 prbe and 20mA with 1 prbe + backlight. WARNING: the display refresh rate setting can affect the data lgging functin f bth the HP23 and prbe 2.3 Prbe inputs The HP23 has tw prbe inputs. Using the HW4 sftware (Device Manager), each prbe input can be cnfigured t accept ne f the fllwing: HygrClip 2 humidity-temperature digital prbe. Any input cnfigured t accept a HygrClip 2 digital prbe can als be used t read and adjust an instrument r device that is based n the AirChip 3000 technlgy (use service cable AC2001). 1-channel analg prbe (general): T be cmpatible with the HP23 the analg prbe must meet the fllwing requirements: supply vltage: max. 5 VDC, current cnsumptin: max. 10 ma, utput signal: 0 t max. 3.3 VDC. The HP23 uses a 12-bit A/D cnverter t digitize the prbe analg signal and can be cnfigured t measure practically any parameter. Analg pressure prbe: this is a special case f analg prbe and is subject t the same cmpatibility requirements. When analg pressure prbe is selected, the HP23 autmatically uses the signal frm the prbe t calculate any humidity parameter that requires barmetric pressure as an input value (example: mixing rati). 2009-2014; Rtrnic AG E-M-HP23-V2_14

The HC2 prbes measure relative humidity with a ROTRONIC Hygrmer IN1 capacitive sensr and temperature with a Pt100 RTD. Analg prbe (general): any parameter measured by the prbe. The parameter unit must be specified with the HW4 sftware (Device Manager). Analg pressure prbe: the unit used fr barmetric pressure is set with the HW4 sftware > Device Manager > System. 2.5 Calculated parameters When a prbe input is cnfigured t accept a HygrClip 2 digital prbe, the HP23 can calculate any f the fllwing parameters based n the humidity and temperature values measured by the prbe (t select the calculated parameter, use either the keypad r the HW4 sftware > Device Manager): Dew pint (Dp) abve and belw freezing Frst pint (Fp) belw freezing and dew pint abve freezing Wet bulb temperature (Tw) Enthalpy (H) Vapr cncentratin (Dv) Specific humidity (Q) Mixing rati by weight (R) Vapr cncentratin at saturatin (Dvs) Vapr partial pressure (E) Vapr saturatin pressure (Ew) Nte: calculating sme f the abve parameters requires barmetric pressure as an input parameter. When n pressure prbe is cnnected t the HP23, a fixed barmetric pressure value can be specified using either the keypad r the ROTRONIC HW4 sftware. N cmmunicatin with the prbe. Display f fixed values when n prbe is cnnected the input. Easily identified humidity and temperature values can be specified with the HW4 sftware fr each prbe input. Bad RH sensr r majr sensr failure (pen r shrted sensr humidity and temperature) Lw battery charge 2.7 Real time clck The HP23 clck keeps track f the date and time and can be adjusted frm the keypad. Using the HW4 sftware, the clck can be synchrnized with the PC date and time. The clck des nt autmatically adjust fr daylight saving time (DST). 2.8 Service cnnectr The service cnnectr f the HP23 is a USB prt. Any standard cable equipped with a mini-usb type cnnectr at ne end can be used t cnnect the HP23 t a PC running the ROTRONIC HW4 sftware. See Maintenance fr the lcatin f the service cnnectr. The service cnnectr is used fr the fllwing: Cnfiguratin f the HP23 Dwnlading data recrded n the HP23 Access t the HygrClip 2 prbe functins Firmware updates 3 User cnfigurable settings and functins The HP23 can be used just as any cnventinal humidity and temperature indicatr. Making use f the HP23 cnfigurable settings and functins is entirely up t the user and the apprpriate settings depend n the user applicatin. We have prvided belw a shrt descriptin f the HP23 functins and als indicated the factry default settings. 3.1 Factry default settings Ntes: Cnfiguratin f the HP23 and prbe by the user and access t its functins requires a PC with the ROTRONIC HW4 sftware (versin 3.0.0 r higher) installed. The Delta Prbe functin is similar t a third prbe that can be selected frm the keypad with the UP key r with the DOWN key. Nte: This functin wrks nly when tw prbes are cnnected t the HP23. Delta Prbe is als nt available when the HP23 has been cnfigured with the HW4 sftware t calculate a user defined parameter (see belw). 4.1.3 User defined parameter Using the HW4 sftware, the HP23 can be enabled t calculate up t tw user defined parameters such as the difference between the temperature and the dew pint measured by a prbe, the average f the temperature measured by tw prbes, etc. The user defined parameters can be shwn n the display by turning n the DPbe/UCalc ptin (HP23 internal menu - accessed frm the keypad). The display is frzen and shws the values that were either last measured r last calculated at the time the ON/OFF key was pressed. The HW4 sftware can als be used t change the prbe type fr each input. 4.7 Practical advice fr measuring humidity The mst cmmn surce f errr when measuring relative humidity is a difference between the temperature f the prbe and the temperature f the envirnment. At a humidity cnditin f 50 %RH, a temperature difference f 1 C (1.8 F) typically results in an errr f 3 %RH n relative humidity. When using the HP22 hand-held indicatr, it is gd practice t mnitr the display fr temperature stability. The prbe shuld be given sufficient time t equilibrate with the envirnment t be measured. The larger the initial temperature difference between the prbe and the envirnment t be measured, the mre time temperature equilibratin requires. This time can be shrtened, and errrs avided, by using the prbe cnfiguratin that fits best fr yur applicatin. In extreme situatins, cndensatin may ccur n the sensrs when the prbe is clder than the envirnment. As lng as the humidity / temperature limits f the humidity sensr are nt exceeded, cndensatin des nt alter the calibratin f the sensr. Hwever, the sensr has t dry ut befre it can prvide a valid measurement. Nn-mving air is an excellent insulatr. When there is n air mvement, surprising differences in temperature and humidity can nted ver shrt distances. When set t perate in the Aw Mde, the HP23 autmatically displays humidity as Aw (1.000 aw = 100 %RH) and ffers the fllwing ptins: AwE measurement ptin: the HP23 waits fr the full equilibratin f the measured prduct and prbe. Fr mst prducts, this takes frm 30 t 60 minutes. The HP23 autmatically detects equilibrium cnditins (humidity and temperature) and ends the measurement at that time by freezing the display. The measurement ends autmatically as sn as the prjected Aw value is stable. At that time, the HP23 freezes the display. The measurement is autmatically ended and typically requires abut 5 t 6 minutes. With the default dwell time f 4 minutes, the difference between the AwQuick functin and the cnventinal measurement methd is typically 0.005 aw r less. The value f the dwell time can be set by the user (see SETTINGS) and is a tradeff between speed f measurement and accuracy. Generally, a lnger dwell time prduces mre accurate results but causes measurements t take lnger. The value f temperature shwn at the end f the measurement is the average temperature during the measurement. The HP23 displays a trend indicatr t the left f the temperature value.
