Hardware Announcement April 11, 2006 IBM 7206 External Tape Drive Model VX3 delivers increased storage capacity Overview The IBM 7206 Model VX3 External Tape Drive is a stand-alone, SCSI, VXA-320 streaming tape drive that attaches externally to the IBM eserver pseries and iseries families of workstations and servers. Key features The IBM 7206 Model VX3 External Tape Drive writes data to tape using a Discrete Packet Format. The tape drive provides a media capacity of up to 160 GB (320 GB with 2:1 compression) of data storage per cartridge and a sustained data transfer rate of up to 12.0 MB per second (24.0 MB per second with 2:1 compression). Benefits The 7206 Model VX3 is downward read and write compatible with media used in VXA-2 tape drives installed internally on iseries and pseries servers as well as with the 7206 Model VX2 external tape drive. The increased capacity of the 7206 Model VX3 media can make it a cost-effective solution for your save, restore, and archiving functions. The 7206 Model VX3 provides: Media storage capacity of up to 160 GB (320 GB with compression), nearly two times the media capacity of the IBM 7206 Model VX2, reducing the number of tape cartridges needed A higher data rate than the 7206 Model VX2 Packet formatted data, variable speed operation, and scanning of data packets multiple times in one scan Reading and writing of VXA-2 and VXA-320 format on X media data cartridges Key prerequisites IBM pseries AIX V5.3.0, or later Linux -- SUSE Enterprise Server 9 for POWER, or later -- Red Hat Enterprise AS for POWER V3, or later IBM iseries OS/400 -- The 7206 Model VX3 requires a supported i5 or iseries system processor with IBM OS/400 V5R3, or later. -- Adapters, including the PCI Magnetic Media Controllers (features 2718 and 2768), the PCI Ultra Tape Controller (feature 5702), or the PCI-X Tape/DASD Controller (features 5705, 5712, and 5715) are offered on i5 and iseries servers. The configurator will determine the correct controller to be used for your specific host system. Linux -- SUSE Enterprise Server 9 for POWER, or later -- Red Hat Enterprise AS for POWER V3, or later Planned availability date May 12, 2006 At a glance The IBM 7206 External Tape Drive Model VX3 is a large-capacity tape drive that writes data to tape using a Discrete Packet Format. The 7206 Model VX3 is designed to provide: Increased tape capacity of up to two times that of the 7206 Model VX2 up to 160 GB physical data storage per cartridge (320 GB with 2:1 compression) A higher data transfer rate up to 12.0 MB per second Data formatted in packets with variable speed scan Multiple data packet scan in one single tape pass For ordering, contact: Your IBM representative, an IBM Business Partner, or the Americas Call Centers at 800-IBM-CALL Reference: YE001 This announcement is provided for your information only. Description The IBM 7206 Model VX3 External Tape Drive is an externally attached tape drive for pseries and iseries workstations and servers. The VXA-320 streaming tape drive writes data to tape cartridges using a Discrete Packet Format and features data compression that provides an effective physical data capacity of up to 320 GB (using 2:1 compression) as well as a data transfer rate of up to 12.0 MB per second. With up to two times the capacity and a higher data rate of the 7206 Model VX2, your productivity can be enhanced. The 7206 Model VX3 is designed to provide a more cost effective solution for save, restore, and archiving functions than previous models. Note: Although the 7206 Model VX3 can give you high tape performance, other components of the system may limit the actual performance achieved. In addition, the compression technology used in the tape drive can double the amount of data that can be stored on the media. However, the actual degree of compression achieved is highly sensitive to the characteristics of the data that is being compressed. Product positioning The higher capacity 7206 Model VX3 is a replacement for the older 7206 Model VX2 tape drive. With its higher capacity, it is also an excellent replacement for older IBM 1/4-inch drives (7207) and other competitive products where this capability is needed. If you have to back up larger amounts of data or need a higher performance tape drive, you might consider the following: IBM 7212 Model 312 VXA-2 Tape Autoloader IBM 7212 Model 102 with Half-High LTO-2 Tape Drive feature IBM 3580 LTO Ultrium Tape Drive IBM 3581 LTO Ultrium Tape Autoloader IBM 3584 UltraScalable LTO Tape Library IBM Magstar MP 3575 Tape Library Dataserver IBM Magstar 3590 Tape Subsystem IBM 3490 Enhanced Capability Magnetic Tape Subsystem Magstar 3494 Tape Library Business Partner information If you are a Direct Reseller - System Reseller acquiring products from IBM, you may link directly to Business Partner information for this announcement.
