1. I N T R O D U C T I O N This guide describes installing Read&Write Gold for multi users in a site. 1.1 Conventions used in this guide The style and conventions in this guide are designed to make reading it as clear and simple as possible. Conventions used for different types of information are discussed in the following sections. Notes Important additional pieces of information that you should be aware of are represented as notes as shown below: This is a note. Warnings Warnings that you must read and observe are represented as shown below: This is a warning. References to other information References to information in other chapters or sections are represented as shown below: This is a reference. 2

2. I N S T A L L I N G R E A D & W R I T E G O L D You can install Read&Write Gold on a client machine in managed or unmanaged mode. This chapter explains how to install both options. 2.1 System requirements Before you can install Read&Write Gold, you must ensure that the computer has: Pentium 4 1.8GHz Processor (Recommended: Pentium 4 2.4GHz or greater) 512 MB RAM (Recommended: 1 GB RAM or greater) 3 2 GB free disk space Windows XP SP3 or above. Internet connection for product activation. 2.2 Software Deployment If you plan to deploy the MSI silently to a number of computers via Microsoft Group Policy, SCCM, or any other desktop management software, you should preconfigure the installer using the MSI Admin Tool. You can download the MSI Admin Tool via the Planning To Deploy link in the Texthelp Read&Write Essentials Website. Once installed, refer to the MSI Admin Tool user guide for further instructions.

2.3 Preparing for installation If you have a network and you have purchased licenses to run several managed or unmanaged Read&Write Gold users, you should plan the installation before you proceed. You must ensure that you have created the following folders on the network: Administration folder this is the folder that contains administration files and is referred to as the Admin folder. This folder should be on the network, and should be accessible using the same path from all workstations, whether logged in as an administrator or a user. When the program starts, it checks in this folder to see which features have been enabled or disabled by the teacher. The benefit of this folder is that from one central location, you can globally enable and disable features for all users, rather than having to visit individual computers. This folder is also necessary for storing the type of license that has been purchased and activated by the site. This includes unlimited and concurrent seat type licenses Users folder this folder is required when carrying out a Managed User installation, it contains the data files and settings for all of the Read&Write Gold users on the network. The users should have full access to this folder and its subfolders. This folder can be a hidden folder if you have concerns about users deleting files. The Users 4

folder contains a sub folder for each user. Users can be added and deleted easily using the Teacher s Toolkit. If the selected Users folder is on a mapped drive, please make sure that this is available to all users. You must ensure that you have sufficient access rights to copy new files into the folders and to create subfolders. If you have a license that allows you to install several users, you should use the same serial number for all installations. When you install Read&Write Gold for several users on a network, the program files will be installed onto the computer. You can repeat this process for each workstation. 2.4 Installing multi user features on a single computer Before you can install Read&Write Gold multi user features on a single computer, you must also ensure that you have created the following folders on the network: Administration folder Users folder. This will help you install both Managed User settings and the Teacher s Toolkit. It is recommended that you install only the Managed Users install onto Student s machines. It is also recommended that you install both the Managed Users install and the Teacher s Toolkit onto 5

teacher s machines. The Teacher s Toolkit must be installed on at least one machine when installing in Managed User mode. To install Read&Write Gold: 1. Download the Read&Write installation extractor from the Texthelp Essentials website. Extract the Setup.zip file and run RWInstall.exe 2. The Read&Write installation files will be extracted to a folder called Read&Write_Install on your desktop. Double-click on the Setup.exe file. If not already present on your system the Microsoft Dot Net 4 framework required by Read&Write will automatically get installed first. You see the Welcome to the Read&Write Installation wizard window displayed. 3. Make sure there are no other programs running before you begin the installation. 4. Click on the Next button. You see the License Agreement window displayed. 5. Make sure you read the License Agreement thoroughly and then select the I accept the license agreement radio button. 6. Click on the Next button. You see the User Information window, which you use to personalize your 6

installation. 7. Enter your name and the company you work for in the appropriate text boxes, and then enter your Read&Write Gold serial number in the Serial Number text box if it is not already populated. 8. Click on the Next button. You see the User Setup window, you are asked to choose between: Unmanaged Users refer to the following section for the subsequent steps Managed Users refer to Section 2.4.3 on page 8 for the subsequent steps. 2.4.2 Unmanaged User Installation If you do not want users to be managed by the Teacher s Toolkit you can choose this option. A shared Administration folder is required but the user data is simply stored in the user s Windows profile. To install Unmanaged Users: 1. Select the Unmanaged Users radio button. 2. Click the Advanced and Web Dictionaries if you wish these to be available to the user, and then click Next. 3. You see the Select Paths window. Enter the path to the shared Administration folder. This folder should be created before continuing 7

with the installation. 4. Click on the Next button. You see the Destination Folder window, which you use to set up the main Installation folder. 5. If you want to set up the main Installation folder in a location other than the one displayed, click on the Browse button and browse to the location in the directory where you want to install Read&Write Gold. 6. Click Yes or No to determine if Read&Write should check for updates every time it loads. Click Next. 7. Click Next to complete installation. 2.4.3 Managed User Installation If you want to manage users using the Teachers Toolkit you should choose the Managed Users option. Both a shared Administration folder and a shared Users folder on the network are required for this type of installation. The Managed User set up is chosen for both user and teacher deployments. The Install Teacher s Toolkit option should only be selected for teacher machine deployments. To install Managed Users: 1. Select the Managed Users radio button. 2. Click Install Teacher s Toolkit if the installation is for a teachers PC. 8

3. Uncheck Active Directory Tab if you do not wish teachers to be able to view the active directory information through the Toolkit. 4. Click the Advanced and Web Dictionaries if you wish these to be available to the user, and then click Next. 5. You see the Select Paths window. Enter the path to the shared Administration and Users folder. These folders should be created before continuing with the installation. 6. Click on the Next button. want to install Read&Write Gold. 8. Click Yes or No to determine if Read&Write should check for updates every time it loads. Click Next. 9. Click Next to complete installation. 3. A C T I V AT I N G R E A D & W R I T E G O L D When you run Read&Write Gold for the first time you will be prompted to activate the software. To activate the software, simply make sure you are currently online and then click on the Activate button. Possible reasons for activation failure include: no internet connection the activation limit has been reached, i.e. the license you have purchased only allows for a certain amount of users 10

cannot connect to the Texthelp Server. If this is the case, please try again later to activate you do not have write access to the chosen administrator folder. 11
