2. I N S T A L L I N G R E A D & W R I T E G O L D You can install Read&Write Gold on a client machine in managed or unmanaged mode. This chapter explains how to install both options. 2.1 System requirements Before you can install Read&Write Gold, you must ensure that the computer has: Pentium 4 1.8GHz Processor (Recommended: Pentium 4 2.4GHz or greater) 512 MB RAM (Recommended: 1 GB RAM or greater) 3 2 GB free disk space Windows XP SP3 or above. Internet connection for product activation. 2.2 Software Deployment If you plan to deploy the MSI silently to a number of computers via Microsoft Group Policy, SCCM, or any other desktop management software, you should preconfigure the installer using the MSI Admin Tool. You can download the MSI Admin Tool via the Planning To Deploy link in the Texthelp Read&Write Essentials Website. Once installed, refer to the MSI Admin Tool user guide for further instructions.
2.3 Preparing for installation If you have a network and you have purchased licenses to run several managed or unmanaged Read&Write Gold users, you should plan the installation before you proceed. You must ensure that you have created the following folders on the network: Administration folder this is the folder that contains administration files and is referred to as the Admin folder. This folder should be on the network, and should be accessible using the same path from all workstations, whether logged in as an administrator or a user. When the program starts, it checks in this folder to see which features have been enabled or disabled by the teacher. The benefit of this folder is that from one central location, you can globally enable and disable features for all users, rather than having to visit individual computers. This folder is also necessary for storing the type of license that has been purchased and activated by the site. This includes unlimited and concurrent seat type licenses Users folder this folder is required when carrying out a Managed User installation, it contains the data files and settings for all of the Read&Write Gold users on the network. The users should have full access to this folder and its subfolders. This folder can be a hidden folder if you have concerns about users deleting files. The Users 4
folder contains a sub folder for each user. Users can be added and deleted easily using the Teacher s Toolkit. If the selected Users folder is on a mapped drive, please make sure that this is available to all users. You must ensure that you have sufficient access rights to copy new files into the folders and to create subfolders. If you have a license that allows you to install several users, you should use the same serial number for all installations. When you install Read&Write Gold for several users on a network, the program files will be installed onto the computer. You can repeat this process for each workstation. 2.4 Installing multi user features on a single computer Before you can install Read&Write Gold multi user features on a single computer, you must also ensure that you have created the following folders on the network: Administration folder Users folder. This will help you install both Managed User settings and the Teacher s Toolkit. It is recommended that you install only the Managed Users install onto Student s machines.
