ZMS eliminates multiple management layers allowing service providers to operate networks efficiently, to smoothly integrate management into Operations Support Systems (OSS), and to rapidly deploy new services. As service providers respond to customer demand for broadband services, they require ways to increase operations efficiency and eliminate subscriber activation backlogs. But with each new service deployed, the provider must integrate the service throughout the network and into another management system. If providers want true network efficiency and flow-through provisioning, they must be able to easily deploy new network devices and launch new services seamlessly into their current network environment. ZMS does just that. As a robust single-seat management solution, ZMS delivers the entire range of Zhone broadband access products and management services, and permits service providers to quickly measure, evaluate, and react to network growth requirements. ZMS is a standards-based, carrier-class network management solution that provides service-to-subscriber management for all Zhone products. From managing all Zhone local loop network elements (including Broadband Access Node, Sechtor, and Z-Edge ), to truck-roll-free provisioning of services to new or existing subscribers, ZMS is the clear choice for your network. ZMS manages the entire local loop network down to the device port level.

SCALABLE AND RELIABLE ARCHITECTURE ZMS is based on the latest software standards and technologies. ZMS s distributed client/ server architecture uses a proven, standards-based application platform providing scalability, performance, and redundancy from the start. Unlike management systems based on proprietary platforms, ZMS is easy to integrate into existing service provider OSSs and third-party products through a published CORBA interface. The ZMS server (available in a UNIX operating system environment) provides a suite of management applications to support all functional areas of network management. NetHorizhon is a Java-based client application (available for both Windows NT and UNIX operating systems) that provides GUI access to all management functions. ZMS communicates with the network via industry-standard protocols such as SNMP and FTP, using reliable mechanisms to ensure timely transfers of management information. FCAPS data and relevant subscriber information are stored in an industry-standard SQL relational database. Scalability and high performance are built into ZMS. Multiple instances of a management application can be geographically distributed and automatically load-balanced to handle both client requests and OSS access. Redundancy is supported through automatic routing of client requests to any available ZMS manager application, providing high system availability.

ZMS COMPLETE SUPPORT FOR ALL NETWORK MANAGEMENT FUNCTIONS ZMS includes the following applications: Fault Manager OSS Gateway Configuration Manager Database Manager Accounting Manager Customer Network Management (CNM) Client Performance Manager NetHorizhon Client Administration Manager Fault Manager handles events from the network elements and correlates them into alarms. It performs filtering, applies rules for various actions, and forwards alarms to external OSS and third-party applications as needed. Configuration Manager performs configuration changes for various objects in network elements and provisions subscribers and end-to-end services within the Zhone environment. It also handles element software downloads. The manager supports the use of templates, which allow the operator to streamline configuration tasks. Accounting Manager collects information on subscriber voice and data sessions for billing and auditing purposes. Performance Manager tracks network performance data in real time, collects historical statistics, and monitors the status of various objects such as I/O cards, ports, trunks, and links. This data allows service providers and subscribers to track trends and service levels. Administration Manager controls access for NetHorizhon (ZMS Client), the CNM Client, and OSS gateways. It does so through administration services that grant clients access to the system based on user login and assigned privileges. A detailed audit log keeps track of all operator actions for later analysis. OSS Gateway provides a published CORBA interface for bi-directional transfer of all management information to the Zhone network. The interface provides a means to integrate ZMS applications into service provider back-office systems and third-party applications. Database Manager intelligently manages data for FCAPS functions in a relational database. CNM Client provides subscribers web access so that they can manage their own service based on assigned privileges. NetHorizhon provides an intuitive graphical interface that operators use to navigate and manipulate elements in the network. Maps and sub-maps represent Zhone domains. Network operators can drill down for detailed views of back panel and front panel chassis, installed cards, and I/O ports. On any element, operators can access configuration, status, and performance information.

RAPID PROVISIONING In today s competitive landscape, service providers recognize that to attract new subscribers, they need to be able to quickly roll out and provision new services. ZMS Configuration Manager allows service providers to completely automate the provisioning of subscribers and various network objects. Through the File Manager like interface of NetHorizhon and other tools (such as configuration and statistics templates and subscriber profiles), operators can rapidly and accurately configure ports, trunks, links, and subscribers. Automated flowthrough provisioning can also be implemented directly from carrier OSS systems via the CORBA IDL for complete integration. End-to-end service provisioning within the Zhone network via NetHorizhon or the CORBA interface enables rapid, one-step service provisioning with reduced carrier costs and increased customer satisfaction. One-step provisioning eliminates tedious, error-prone, multi-step operations for providers. ZMS also allows subscribers to remotely control and provision their own services and bandwidth. SUBSCRIBER AND SERVICE MONITORING The point-and-click NetHorizhon interface shows network inventories and device configurations. Service providers are constantly striving to provide networks that maintain the high service levels that their subscribers demand. ZMS provides several tools that enable proactive tracking of potential bottlenecks and problems before they impact the network s performance and availability. Traditional network operations involve managing devices, cards, ports, links, trunks, and Customer Premise Equipment (CPE). ZMS offers selectable views that depict network operations or subscriber-specific information, creating a whole new model for managing broadband access networks. Operators can monitor subscriber services through these views, and when service problems arise, they can retrieve any subscriber s service path through the network, pinpoint affected segments or elements, perform diagnostics, and quickly re-establish the affected service. ZMS Fault Manager performs advanced filtration and correlation to pinpoint service-affecting areas. Network managers can use this information to differentiate intelligently between the informational and service-affecting events that are generated throughout the network. In

ZMS conjunction with intelligence provided on Zhone network elements, ZMS allows for setup of Threshold Crossing Alarms (TCA) to monitor service utilization, trunk usage, or link congestion and notify operators of potential bottlenecks before they occur. ZMS Performance Manager provides for real-time and historical collection of subscriber and service data. By evaluating historical network parameters, network architects can efficiently design and plan network growth. In addition, Performance Manager enables extended tracking of various metrics for Service Level Agreements (SLAs). Such information allows service providers and their subscribers to confirm that service levels are being met. The collected information can also be used for auditing and traffic planning purposes. ZMS Accounting Manager retrieves usage-based subscriber session data on voice and data traffic from Zhone network elements. Service providers can then use accounting information to offer various billing services such as usage-based, time-of-day, and on-demand billing from information collected in real time. ZMS components are self-monitoring, allowing operators to upgrade components as required. ZMS manager parameters (such as provisioning transactions/sec, traps, CPU usage, memory usage, and disk space availability) provide for upgrade planning. SECURE SUBSCRIBER ACCESS AND DATA SECURITY Secure access and safe storage of subscriber data are major concerns for service providers. ZMS Administration Manager allows the network administrator to configure various user groups and assign a ZMS user to a particular group with privileges for defined tasks. Unique subscriber and provider IDs are used to partition and store management information sent to and from the network. These IDs allow for the smooth manipulation of data on a per-subscriber basis, and they also facilitate network partitioning to support wholesaling models. AUTOMATIC DEVICE DISCOVERY AND INVENTORY CONTROL ZMS integrates an intelligent polling mechanism to monitor the status of nodes and connections between them. The automatically discovers connected Zhone access devices and CPE devices and notifies ZMS of any additions. The Object Tree application in NetHorizhon presents all discovered information in a file manager-like structure for easy access to information. ZMS tracks the inventory of equipment that has been discovered and reports its statistics, including hardware version and loaded software revision on each device. Using the reporting feature in NetHorizhon, users can print software and hardware inventory reports. SIMPLIFIED OSS INTEGRATION All Zhone network elements share the ZMS management environment; a common, open set of Applications Programming Interfaces (APIs) and a standards-based CORBA interface. By eliminating the multiple APIs and element management systems found in today s access networks, ZMS enables flow-through accounting and provisioning from back-office systems to the subscriber premise. Since new network elements are quickly integrated into ZMS, traffic and performance data on those elements automatically flow through to the OSS.

ZHONE MANAGEMENT CHANNEL Typically, ZMS is connected to the over Ethernet for access to all management functions. Zhone Integrated Access Devices (IADs) are in turn connected to the and are managed in-band over SDSL/HDSL-2 connections. The and all of its associated Zhone IADs are managed as a single entity, simplifying management of even the largest networks, while ensuring scalability and performance. IAD provisioning, software upgrades, and configuration changes for new services are all accomplished via the Zhone Management Channel. NMS VERSION INDEPENDENCE AND NON-SERVICE AFFECTING UPGRADES While service providers generally want to take advantage of new features introduced in a software release, they are often faced with large-scale upgrades that are planning-intensive and require careful coordination among sites. ZMS addresses upgrade issues by supporting version independence between client and server software and allowing for multiple versions of a manager to coexist on the network. ZMS administrators can accomplish upgrades in stages one version of ZMS can be upgraded to a newer version, tested for satisfactory performance, and then brought online so that other instances can be similarly upgraded. REVENUE-GENERATING SERVICES ZMS enables service providers to offer a full range of revenue-generating services to their subscribers. CUSTOMER NETWORK MANAGEMENT (CNM) SERVICE Subscriber self-administration is a key differentiator to service provider offerings. It facilitates instant subscriber service changes and allows subscribers to view near real-time billing information. By enabling CNM services, ZMS increases subscriber satisfaction, reduces services support costs, and gives service providers the option to offer tiered CNM service packages that generate additional revenues. ZMS ACCOUNTING SERVICES Information collected on voice and data services by the ZMS Accounting Manager and integrated with billing systems makes it possible to offer new billing plans. Traditional flat-rate billing offers little flexibility and doesn t fit all subscribers. With ZMS, service providers can bill on usage, time of day, or on demand. ZMS is a conduit that helps service providers monitor various Service Level Agreement (SLA) parameters such as network latency, network availability, and throughput. PARTITIONING AND WHOLESALING Service providers who own the access infrastructure seek to wholesale broadband services to other service providers, who can in turn offer them to individual business and residential customers. ZMS, in conjunction with support provided in Zhone network devices, enables smooth and secure partitioning of data, and also offers a partitioned view into the wholesale components of the network (through its GUI and other interfaces) for controlled access to management functions.
