Changes with Avid inews Instinct v1.1.1 The following were fixed with v1.1.1: Previously, Instinct might not recognize non-drop timecode. This has been fixed. Previously, you might have experienced failures when a story was saved. This has been fixed. Changes with Avid inews Instinct v1.1 The following changes are included with Avid inews Instinct v1.1. Adjusting Input Volume for Recording Voice-Over Narration Using Custom Layouts International Character Support Keyboard Shortcut Changes Shortcuts for Foreign Language Keyboards Target Workspace Fixed with v1.1 Adjusting Input Volume for Recording Voice-Over Narration You can now change the default input level for audio gain (the input volume). When you use the Input Level control to modify the volume, Avid inews Instinct saves the new level and uses it as the default level for all sessions until you set a new level. See Recording Voice-Over Narration in the Help. Using Custom Layouts Avid inews Instinct has added a default layout for the Research panel. This allows you to return at any time to the panel layout that appears when you first open Avid inews Instinct. You now can also delete any saved layout you created as a custom Research panel display. See Saving a Custom Layout in the Help. International Character Support This release now includes International Character Support. This does not include Multi-byte languages. Avid inews Instinct currently support French, Italian, German, and Spanish. 2

Changes with Avid inews Instinct v1.1 Keyboard Shortcut Changes The following keyboard shortcuts have been changed for the current release of Avid inews Instinct. The voice-over target workspace must be specified in Avid Unity MediaManager and must be read/write for any user performing a Send to Playback or voice-overs. 4

Fixed with v1.1 Changes with Avid inews Instinct v1.1 Previously, the mechanism used to determine if a clip matched the project edit rate was not working properly. This has been fixed. Memory leaks occurred when opening and closing stories. These memory leaks were fixed. Blank lines in stories were not preserved if they were in a block of formatted text. This has been fixed. Performing Ctrl + Z after inserting a production cue caused an Access Violation. This has been fixed. If you created folders and catalogs within Avid Unity MediaManager and the catalog names contained International Character Support (ICS) characters, when you searched for media on the top level catalog folder from within Instinct, the system would lock up. This has been fixed. Previously, when using Windows Classic desktop theme, the login dialog was distorted. This has been fixed. Stories did not edit lock as soon as a voiceover started recording. This has been fixed. If you reconfigured the PortServer while Avid inews Instinct had a clip loaded, you needed to reload the clip to update the frames. This has been fixed. If you pressed Ctrl+Alt+Delete, Avid inews Instinct played nothing but black until you restarted. Now, if you minimize and maximize the application, you do not need to restart. Sometimes Instinct tried to save stories with invalid anchor IDs (anchor IDs numbered above 255). This caused production cues to fail to save to inews, resulting in a loss of information. This has been fixed. Audio mixdowns created during send to playback were created with no locator information. This has been fixed. In some cases, Instinct was adding invalid "lead hidden text" to the News Story Markup Language (NSML) of inews stories, which prevented the story from being created. This has been fixed. 5

When prompted, select Yes, restart my computer. For information on starting Avid inews Instinct, see the Avid inews Instinct User s Guide. 8

Limitations and Known Issues Limitations and Known Issues Avid INEWS users are able to delete media production cues that have been placed by Instinct. You cannot navigate mouse-free between tabs in the Research panel. If the German character ß appears in the Tape ID, Instinct will not send the sequence to AirSPACE. The following error will appear: Error: TransferControllerSend CompInvalid TapeID When searching in the catalog side of the media tab for text in custom or comments fields, no results are returned. Currently, there is no way to search in catalogs for strings other than in the Name and Tape fields. Searching in the top level Projects folder may return assets that are only in the Catalogs tree. Searching within specific projects returns the correct results. The Tooltip associated with the head frame clarifies where the clip was actually found. If you create a column layout where the headframe is not the first column, and then save it and open a new bin, the new bin will have all its headframes appear in the loading state until you click inside the bin. The audio track names shown next to the audio meters and on the audio tracks in the Storyline might not match what you have entered in the Instinct site settings. Deleting an Avid inews Instinct production cue or rearranging the Instinct production cues in Avid inews may cause problems in Instinct. Do not delete or rearrange an Instinct production cue from within Avid inews. Do not install Avid Unity MediaManager Select Players on the same system as your Avid inews Instinct application. Do not install any other Avid editing applications on the same system as your Avid inews Instinct application. When you log into Connection Manager as a read-only user for Avid Unity workspaces, and you log into Avid inews Instinct as the same user, you should not be allowed to perform a voice-over. Currently, if you use a read-only Avid Unity user, Instinct does not acknowledge this, and therefore does not disable voice-over. If you try to perform a voice-over, Instinct hangs and you have to click the Story or Source buttons to continue. 9

Avid inews Instinct creates an audio dissolve between each clip in your sequence. Because the dissolve requires at least one frame to fade out or fade in, you should not mark your In point and Out point at the first and last frames of your clip. For more information about audio, see Using Audio in the Help. If your screen resolution is set below 1024 x 768, an InitializeAME error might occur when you launch the Avid inews Instinct application. Workaround: Make sure your screen resolution is not below 1024 x 768. The /site/system profile on your Avid inews server specifies the default number of results returned by a search of the Avid inews database (usually a maximum of 500). If your search generates more results than allowed by the default setting, the number of results displayed in the Research panel might be lower than the actual number of matches for your search term. Your Avid inews system manager can configure the default setting, if necessary. Avid inews Instinct does not display ingests monitored by CaptureManager placed directly into a project. Workaround: Make a subdirectory in CaptureManager (Incoming Folder). Sequences created in Avid inews Instinct cannot be loaded and played in MediaManager Browser Player. Video might display different during playback. If you see the video display shift in brightness, contrast, hue, or saturation when you pause and play video, you should adjust the graphics controls in the video card settings. Queues that would typically be automatically refreshed in Avid inews, such as rundowns and wires, need to be refreshed manually in inews Instinct to see new stories or changes to existing stories. Easy and Key Locked queues and stories cannot be accessed from Avid inews Instinct. Moving a segment with a loaded story might hang the storyline panel. Workaround: Wire stories should be for viewing. The Voiceover button displays active any time a story is open, even if the story is not selected. Edit While Capture does not update the duration when finished ingesting. Workaround: Press Ctrl + F5 to refresh. 10

Documentation Changes Timecode for some clips originally captured with either an Avid editing system or an ingest device might display incorrectly. This can happen when all of the following are true: the Video Format setting in the Instinct Workgroup Settings dialog box in Avid MediaManager is set to Either, the capture occurs in an OMF environment, and the media clip is captured in an NTSC format with non-drop-frame timecode (for example, when the media clip is captured in Satellite mode on an Avid NewsCutter Adrenaline system with Capture settings specified as OMF). In inews Instinct, the duration of the clip displays correctly, but the timecode for the start and end of the clip might be incorrect. The problem does not occur when using Advanced Authoring Format (AAF) files or when the Video Format in MediaManager is set to an NTSC or a PAL format. Workaround: Use an Avid NewsCutter system to access the master clip, change the timecode format to drop-frame, check the clip in to MediaManager, and then open the clip in inews Instinct. The timecode displays correctly. Documentation Changes The following documentation changes were made after the Avid inews Instinct User s Guide was printed. The following section should have been included in the Starting Avid inews Instinct section of the user s guide. Mounting Workspaces on an Avid Unity ISIS System If your system is connected to an Avid Unity ISIS media network, you can mount an Avid Unity ISIS workspace before you begin your inews Instinct session by using Avid Unity Client Manager. To mount Avid Unity ISIS workspaces on your system: 1. Make sure your Avid application is not running. 2. Do one of the following: t Double-click the Client Manager icon in the Windows taskbar, or right click Client the Manager icon and select Show Client Manager. t If the icon is not available, select Start > Programs > AvidUnityISIS > ClientManager. If you are logged in to Windows using a valid user name and password from the Avid Unity ISIS system, the Client Manager dialog box opens and displays a list of all the workspaces to which you have access. If you are not logged in with a valid user name and password, you are prompted to supply them before the Client Manager dialog box opens. 11

Workspaces that are already mounted appear bold in the Workspaces list. n To mount a workspace that is not mounted. 1. In the Workspaces list, select the workspace or workspaces you want to mount. To select all workspaces, select Edit > Select All. 2. (Option) If you want the selected workspaces remounted the next time you log in, select the box under the Remount section of the window. 3. Click the Mount button in the window. The Client Manager mounts the selected workspaces on your client, starting with the next available drive letter. Edit Lock Change The edit lock behavior has changed. Press Ctrl+S to save the story and keep the edit lock. When you press Ctrl+E, you receive a dialog box asking if you want to save the story. If you choose to save, the story is saved and keeps the edit lock. If you choose not to save the story, the story closes without saving and keeps the lock. Exporting a Story for Playback Before you can send your story and the associated media sequence to playback, you must install and configure the TransferManager client software on your Avid MediaManager server. For information on installing TransferManager software, see the Avid Unity TransferManager Release Notes. 12
