Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP, Windows XP Tablet PC, Mac OS X v.10.2.2 Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional For Prepress and Print Professionals Providing specialized tools to solve today s prepress and print output challenges The Adobe Acrobat 6.0 family The Acrobat 6.0 product family helps businesses simplify document processes using Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF). The de facto standard adopted by governments and enterprises worldwide, Adobe PDF is a reliable, secure format for electronic document exchange. Acrobat 6.0 Professional software is for the prepress professional but also benefits business, creative, and engineering professionals who work with complex, graphically rich layouts to improve the reliability and efficiency of critical document exchange. Acrobat 6.0 Standard software helps business professionals quickly and easily convert Microsoft Office documents, Web content, and more into secure Adobe PDF files, which can then be exchanged with and reviewed by colleagues and customers. Acrobat Elements software helps enterprises extend the value of a Microsoft Office investment by standardizing on Adobe PDF for reliable document distribution. Adobe Reader 6.0 software is downloadable software, available free of charge, that allows any computer user to open, view, and print Adobe PDF files. At A Glance Listening to print service providers Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional software was created with the specific needs of print service providers in mind. The most comprehensive version of Adobe Acrobat ever produced has been tailored to give you the tools needed to meet both your daily file processing needs as well as the challenges faced by the print industry. Based on feedback solicited from creative and print/prepress professionals, Adobe built many new features into Acrobat 6.0 Professional for them, including reliable, predictable output options; preflighting; the ability to preview and print color separations and transparency; control over spot colors; and the tools to create and validate PDF/X compliance. Identify potential problems onscreen The ability to quickly see potential print problems in an Adobe PDF file was a highly requested feature. Such previewing capabilities can help save time, reduce costs, and result in fewer late-stage errors. Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional introduces new features such as Separation Preview, Transparency Flattener Preview, and a greatly expanded array of viewing, navigation, and magnification tools. These new features, together with Overprint Preview from Acrobat 5.0, give print professionals the capabilities they need to examine a file onscreen to ensure it will print as expected. Easily view each process or spot color with Separation Preview The new Separation Preview feature lets you easily preview the process and spot color separations in an Adobe PDF document. You can turn the color plates for each page on or off in any combination, quickly preview the effect of changing spot colors to process, individually or all at once, and view spot and process screen percentages in a specific area by simply placing the cursor over that area. See the effects of flattener settings with Transparency Flattener Preview Similar to Adobe InDesign and Illustrator files, Adobe PDF files can contain live transparency that must be flattened during print output or export to certain file formats such as EPS. This transparency flattening depends on the flattener settings chosen during output, which directly affect the quality of the output. Acrobat 6.0 Professional includes settings such as the Vector/Raster Balance slider, rasterization resolution, and others to control flattening. Acrobat 6.0 Professional also includes a Transparency Flattener Preview, which provides a visual inspection of the objects that have transparency applied and the effects your settings will have on those objects. Change the flattener settings to see the effects on the document prior to any output. This feature allows you to to accurately predict the results of transparency flattening and detect potential problems before they become expensive mistakes. Get a closer look with added magnification power and enhanced tools Just as the loupe tool has been a vital component in the prepress toolbox, the new Loupe tool in Acrobat 6.0 Professional allow you to zero in on any location in a document to get a close-up view of the content. Other enhancements to the viewing and navigation tools in Acrobat 6.0 Professional make it easier to find your way around Adobe PDF documents. With the new Split Window view you can simultaneously have top and bottom windows with page views or enlargements of two different areas within the same file. You can use tools such as the Pan & Zoom Window, which is similar to the Navigator in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator; Dynamic Zoom, a quick method of zooming in or out with one tool; or the traditional Zoom In and Zoom Out tools to quickly achieve the desired view in the single window view or in each window using the Split Window view. Plus, these tools have magnification power up to 6400%, so you can see more detail in illustrations, easily view large-format documents, and more readily find overprint and trapping problems.

Note the red circle on the building. The Loupe tool is magnifying the circle by 360% making it clearly visible in the Loupe tool window. Because the Loupe tool cursor is positioned on the circle (note where the arrow is pointing) the information at that point is displayed in the Separation Preview dialog box. You can see that the circle is a 45% tint of PMS 711. You can also see that at that point the color is 32% Cyan, 25% Magenta, 23% Yellow, and 21% Black. The square boxes on the left side of the Separation Preview palette hide and show plates and switch spot to process views. The pointing arrow is PMS 7406 and is now shown as process, indicated by the process designation replacing the X in the adjacent box. Benefit from new tools to check a document before output Print professionals fear finding mistakes that cause them to stop the press, or cause a bottleneck at the RIP due to improperly created PDF files. New preflighting tools in Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional such as the new Separation Preview and Transparency Flattener Preview provide you with tools to perform thorough virtual inspections of Adobe PDF documents. Take advantage of built-in preflighting Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional s built-in preflight tools allow users to perform more than 400 predefined checks for all the common output errors that can come with the designer s file. Preflight also includes checking for powerful PDF criteria such as PDF/X-1a and PDF/X-3 compliance, as well as PostScript level compatibility and many other options. You can also configure Acrobat preflight to match the requirements of your own production process. Customized profiles can be easily created, edited, or exported to be distributed to other computers or to customers. This combination of standard and user-created profiles gives prepress professionals the power to meet their most stringent preflight requirements and satisfy workflow standards specific to their shop. A growing number of printers have modified their existing workflow to comply with PDF/X, an ISO standard that is gaining global support among publishers, ad agencies, and printers. Compliance with established PDF/X standards significantly reduces or eliminates common print output problems. PDF/X-1a is a standard for blind submission of PDF files, so the user can be assured that the file contains no colors other than process and/or spot colors, for instance. PDF/X-3 allows inclusion of color-managed data. For those seeking additional PDF/X features, the Preflight: PDF/X dialog box offers additional options such as saving as a PDF/ X file, extracting an output intent profile, and the definition of PDF/X sets to further refine the verification criteria for PDF/X-compliant files in your workflow. Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional gives print professionals a complete solution for checking for both PDF/X-1a and PDF/X-3 compliance within a document. Simply select the appropriate Preflight Profiles and click Analyze. The preflight report provides details on any problems identified and allows you to quickly locate and view the specific problem objects. For example, double-clicking on an object listed in the report will identify the object in the document by surrounding it with a bold dotted line. Selecting Active Snap will display the object in a separate window. Additionally, after you preflight a PDF file, the preflight report, the profile used, and a time stamp can be embedded into the file for communicating preflight information back to the customer.

3 The Preflight: Profiles dialog box has List all potential problems highlighted. Double-clicking on the highlighted item or selecting Analyze generates the preflight report for that profile. Selecting Edit opens Preflight: Edit profiles, which gives the user a variety of options for building preflight criteria. Note the options listed in the Preflight: Profiles dialog box for checking PDF/X compliance. Clicking the PDF/X button opens the Preflight: PDF/X dialog box for additional options. New tools give you more measurement options Before the advent of digital files, printers used mechanicals to look at and manually measure elements on a page. Acrobat 6.0 Professional now has Rulers with Guides that can be dragged onto the page in addition to the Grids provided in past versions. Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional also introduces three measurement tools for Distance, Perimeter, and Area. These tools allow you to quickly obtain the x and y coordinates, distance, angle, and area of elements in a document. Prepress professionals no longer have to produce a proof or print-out of the document to get the measurements they need. For example, binding and trimming rules can be precisely placed on the page to check copy fit on a six-page barrel fold. Now, measurements can be determined onscreen with greater accuracy, precision, and speed than by measuring elements manually. Print with more control An impressive array of new features in Acrobat 6.0 Professional help ensure you know enough about a file to meet on-press expectations. The new preflight capabilities allow you to check a document to validate that it meets all the criteria your shop has established. You can look at the color plates, check overprint, and ensure that all transparency will be correctly flattened. But what is your workflow, and what kind of press are you going to use-digital, DI, offset, gravure? Does it use toner, inkjet, or offset inks? Is it just 4/c process or will the spot colors print? Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional can easily handle all these situations. For example, if you have a composite workflow with InRIP trapping, use the new InRIP Separations option to configure spot and process plates for a multicolor offset press. All these options are now available in the new Advanced Print Setup dialog box. Use new advanced print options The Advanced Print Setup dialog box closely mirrors the Print dialog box in Adobe InDesign 2.0. It is divided into four panels: Output, Marks and Bleeds, Transparency Flattening, and PostScript Options. In the Output panel, you get color choices such as Composite, Composite Gray, Separations, and InRIP Separations (supported by manypostscript 3 devices). Choosing Separations or InRIP Separations activates the Ink Manager, which gives you control over process and spot colors you can convert spot colors to process during output or change screen angle and line screen. You can now print color separations directly from Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional plus, all changes can be viewed in a preview on the bottom left of the dialog box. Marks and Bleeds gives you control over Crop Marks, Trim Marks, Bleed Marks, Registration Marks, Color Bars, and omitting or retaining Page Information. Transparency Flattening will give you control over transparency flattening settings and options. PostScript Options allows you to control when fonts and resources should be downloaded, select the PostScript language level compatibility, and choose additional output options. Whatever choices you make affects output only. The original file remains unchanged. Plus, your print settings can be saved and distributed, ensuring easy repeated use with reliable and consistent output. The new Advanced Print Setup dialog box will enable the print professional to meet any output challenge.

Create Adobe PDF files with more options than ever Acrobat 6.0 Professional offers more ways than ever to easily create an Adobe PDF file including dragging and dropping a file onto the Acrobat desktop icon or exporting directly from design applications. Print professionals can continue to use Adobe Acrobat Distiller to convert PostScript files to Adobe PDF, and new features make Distiller a more efficient tool. For Macintosh users, it is important to note that Distiller runs natively in Mac OS X. 4 Take advantage of new Distiller options Acrobat Distiller 6.0 provides new sets of predefined settings for creating Adobe PDF files, including those ready for print output<em dash>press Quality, PDF/X-1a, and PDF/X-3. Of course, you may want to create a custom settings file tailored to your specific workflow; now, your customers can simply drag and drop that file onto the Distiller window to install it. Additionally, in the General panel, you can enter descriptive information explaining your customized settings. The settings in the Fonts and Color panels should be familiar; in the Images panel (formerly Compression), Text & Line Art Compression was removed and is now always on. The Advanced panel has an important new option to support Job Definition Format (JDF) files. Distiller also offers a new option to extract the settings files from an Adobe PDF file to use in creating other PDF files. For printers adapting their workflows to the international PDF/X standards, a new PDF/X panel provides additional features to aid in the creation of PDF/X-3 and PDF/X-1a compliant files. For Acrobat 6.0 compatibility only, there is now an option to support the new JPEG 2000 standard, enabling image compression with JPEG 2000 options. Other ways of creating an Adobe PDF After you install Acrobat 6.0, native applications will have access to the Adobe PDF printer, which uses Distiller in the background to quickly convert files to Adobe PDF. You can even select your Distiller settings file from within the creation application. Many non-adobe applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel include one-button Adobe PDF creation. Collaborate more efficiently Acrobat 6.0 Professional offers several new features to help both creative designers and print professionals meet daily challenges, including enhanced collaboration tools and the PDF Optimizer. Review and comment with enhanced tools With Acrobat 6.0 Professional, it s easier than ever to provide and incorporate feedback during the review process. The features range from creating custom stamps to easily viewing, sorting, and filtering comments using the Comments List tab. Plus, you can now indicate text corrections such as insertions, deletions, and replacement text with a single click. Acrobat 6.0 Professional allows users to format, reply to, and spell-check comments, and import comments or create a comment summary page to view all comments together. With Acrobat 6.0 Professional, users can easily integrate comments into a single Adobe PDF file a more efficient and accurate way to compile and reconcile comments from multiple reviewers than traditional, paper-based review processes. For prepress and print professionals, these new tools will prove invaluable in exchanges with designers and clients throughout the printing process. Gain file size flexibility The PDF Optimizer lets you create a backwards-compatible Adobe PDF file by selecting an earlier version of Acrobat (version 4.0 or 5.0). You can decrease file size by unembedding fonts or using the Clean Up tab to selectively remove unnecessary objects. This feature allows printers to provide clients with multiple versions of PDF files (a high-resolution one for print and a lower-resolution one for Web/CD), thereby helping their clients solve cross-media workflow needs.
