10 Classes 2 nd Exam Review Lesson - 15 Introduction Windows 7, previous version of the latest version (Windows 8.1) of Microsoft Windows, was produced for use on personal computers, including home and business desktops, laptops, netbooks, tablet PCs, and media center PCs. Windows 7 was released to manufacturing on July 22, 2009, and reached general retail availability on October 22, 2009. 2 Some New Features of Windows 7 Libraries Multi-Touch Aero Peek Aero Shake Jump Lists Taskbar Icons New Themes Snapping Internet Explorer 9 Windows Media Player 12 Gadgets Desktop Slideshow Libraries Libraries help you quickly access files and folders located in different places of your computer or network. Libraries bring files and folders you need to one place, no matter where they are stored. 3 4 Multi-Touch If you ve got a touch-screen PC, you can easily read online newspapers or manage your files without the need for a mouse. All you need is your fingers. For example, in order to zoom in on picture, just put your two fingers on the screen and spread them apart. Aero Peek Aero Peek lets us preview the desktop in an X-Ray vision mode. Using this feature, we can peer past all your open windows straight to the Windows 7 desktop. 5 6 1

10 Classes 2 nd Exam Review Aero Shake You can use Aero Shake to quickly minimize all open windows except the one you re shaking. This feature can save you time if you want to focus on a single window without minimizing all your other open windows one by one. You can then restore all of those windows by shaking the open window again. Jump Lists Jump lists give you the option of viewing a list of recently accessed files by application, even when the application is not open, by right-clicking on the program s icon in the taskbar. Jump lists have also been integrated into the Start Menu. 7 8 Taskbar Icons In Windows 7, we can close any application using its preview window. We can pause Media Player using its thumbnail. New Themes Windows 7 offers you new themes with an Aero desktop experience. New themes include a set of desktop background pictures sliding over time. 9 10 Snapping Snapping is a new way of resizing open windows. All we need to do is drag a window to the top, left, or right edge of the screen. We can resize the window in several ways depending on which side you drag. Internet Explorer 9 Internet Explorer 9 was released as the fastest and safest version of all Microsoft Internet Explorer browsers. After Windows 7 was released, Internet Explorer 9 was introduced to Windows users. 11 12 2

10 Classes 2 nd Exam Review Windows Media Player 12 Windows Media Player now plays the most popular audio and video formats, including new support for 3GP, AAC, AVCHD, DivX, MOV, and XVid. Gadgets Gadgets are mini-programs that come with Windows. In Windows Vista, gadgets were placed in the sidebar located along the right edge of the screen. Windows 7 sets gadgets free, and now we can place gadgets anywhere we want on the screen. 13 14 Desktop Slideshow The Desktop Slideshow feature allows the user to change the wallpaper at specified intervals, ranging from 10 seconds to 1 day. Each Windows 7 theme has its own slideshow, which contains several wallpapers. We can also create our own desktop slideshow using your own pictures. 15 Lesson - 16 www.semainformatics.wordpress.com Logging On to Windows When the installation of Microsoft Windows 7 is finished and you turn on your computer, the Windows 7 logon screen will appear. If we set a password for your user account during the installation of Windows, click on the user account button and enter our password. If we did not set a password, just click on the button and log on to Windows 7. Windows Desktop When we log on to Windows, the first thing we will see on the screen is the desktop. 17 18 3

10 Classes 2 nd Exam Review Windows 7 Desktop Components Some of Windows 7 Desktop Components are: 1. Start Button 2. Most Used Programs List 3. Search Box 4. Mouse Pointer 5. Taskbar Buttons 6. Tooltip 7. Taskbar 8. Start Menu 9. Gadgets 10. Pinned Items List 11. Icon 12. Notification Area 19 Taskbar The taskbar is the long horizontal bar at the bottom of the screen. Unlike the desktop, which can get obscured by open windows, the taskbar is almost always visible. It has four main sections: The show desktop button The Start button The middle section The notification area 20 Quick Lunch Default Quick Lunch buttons are: Internet Explorer Windows Media Player Windows Explorer Start Button The Start button is located on the left edge of the taskbar. It is the most important component on the Windows desktop. It is used to open the Start menu, which is used to access all your programs as well as recently used programs and files. 21 22 Time and Date The time and date are displayed near the right edge of the taskbar. You can change time and date settings by clicking on the time and date icon. 23 Window A window is a frame on the screen that displays the contents of opened: files, folders, or programs. Several windows can be displayed on the screen at one time, either side by side, top to bottom, or overlapping. 24 4

10 Classes 2 nd Exam Review Taskbar Buttons Taskbar buttons are icons representing open and pinned programs, folders, or files. Whenever you open a program, folder, or file, Windows creates a corresponding button on the taskbar. The button shows an icon that represents the open program. Start Menu You can open the Start menu by clicking the Start button or by using the <Ctrl>+<Esc> key combination or by pressing from keyboard. The Start menu lets you easily access the most useful items on your computer. All Programs Most frequently used programs Search box. 25 26 Recycle Bin The Recycle Bin stores all the files you delete from your computer. We can use the Recycle Bin to restore files you have accidentally deleted. We get more disk space by emptying the Recycle Bin. The Recycle Bin is the only folder displayed on the desktop when you first start Windows 7. Computer Icon You can access all your drives, removable media (e.g., DVD or flash memory), folders, and files using the Computer icon. It is the main access to all files in your computer. 27 28 Network Icon The Network icon provides access to the computers and devices on our network. From there, we can see the contents of network computers and find shared files and folders. We can also view and install network devices, such as printers. 29 User s Folder By default when we save a file it is saved to User Folder. By default, it contains (user files and folders) folders such as: Documents, My Music, My Pictures, My Videos and Downloads. This folder is named after the user account s name. 30 5

10 Classes 2 nd Exam Review Control Panel We can use the Control Panel to change settings for Windows. These settings control nearly everything about how Windows looks and works, and they allow us to set up Windows so that it s just right for us. Shortcuts Shortcuts are a type of icon that offers quick access to files, folders, or programs. Shortcuts look similar to other icons except that they have a small, curved arrow in the bottom-left corner. We can create, copy, move, and delete a shortcut without affecting the file, folder, or program itself. 31 32 Icons Files, folders, and programs are represented by small pictures called icons. A file s icon is represented by the program the file was created. For example: A Microsoft Word document s icon is similar to the icon of the Microsoft Word program in which the document was created. The name of the file, folder, or program is displayed under the icon. Icon of a Word Document Icon of a Folder Icon of the Word Program Gadgets Gadgets are mini-programs that come with Windows 7. Using gadgets, you can access frequently used tools. We can place gadgets anywhere on the screen by dragging them. 33 34 Lesson - 17 Understanding Windows Windows are frames on the desktop that contain the contents of opened files, folders, or programs.
