The new -CNR series features a feed-through (Kelvin) parallel connection.this highly efficient configuration minimizes inductance and lowers the actual clamping voltage by virtually eliminating the lead length of the surge protection device. Joslyn AC Surge Protectors Provide state-of-the-art, field-tested, time-proven MOV and SAD technologies to protect your valuable equipment and keep it on-line to protect your customer revenue streams. Respond instantaneously and reliably to repeated high-current lightning and other transient voltage surges. Accurately indicate operational protection status via jumbo, long-life LEDs. Offer optional remote-monitoring that alerts the Operations Management Center and/or off-site technicians about protection status and power disturbances. maximum performance and reliability reducing (clamping) the high transient voltage to harmless levels. Upon the end of the transient event, the device automatically returns to its normal operating condition without service interruption. Approvals and standards applicable to Joslyn AC surge protectors: ANSI/IEEE C62.11 ANSI/IEEE C62 ANSI/IEEE C62.41 Bellcore TR-NWT-001011 CE per Directive 73/23/EEC CSA Certification cul Feature a modular design, making them highly flexible and customizable for your specific performance and installation requirements. Ensure reliable performance supported by long warranties. IEEE C62.1 RUS acceptance UL 1449, 2nd Edition Method of operation When a transient surge exceeds the normal system voltage, the protection device responds within nanoseconds and changes state from a highimpedance open circuit to a low-impedance shunt (short circuit). Connected in parallel with the facility s loads, the device diverts damaging current away from sensitive loads while simultaneously 3

Surge Protector Voltage Ratings: All models are designed to operate at the referenced nominal system voltage. Maximum Surge Current (refer to ka per Phase column in Selection Guide). This value represents the maximum current amplitude (on an 8/20 µs waveform*) the protector can conduct without causing physical damage and while still retaining protection capacity. It is the sum of the L-N rating plus the L-G rating. *Refer to IEEE 62.41 for definition a b c FIGURE VOLTS VOLTS VOLTS 6A 240 120 208 Minimum Life Expectancy of any surge protection device (SPD) is the result of two primary factors: the frequency and intensity of surge-causing events (e.g., direct or induced lightning, induction, PFC capacitor, load switching, etc.). Therefore, it is imperative to properly select an SPD appropriate for the following factors: 1. the facility s exposure to surges, rather than to the size of the load or service; 2. the criticality or value of the equipment being protected; and 3. the location of the SPD within the facility s power distribution system. Load Ratings (or service amperage) of the secondary distribution system do not represent objective SPD selection criterion since the protection devices are installed in parallel with the loads. Surge currents entering or generated within a facility are completely independent of the substation kva capacity or service amperage. Again, exposure (the likelihood and magnitude of surge events) and SPD location (service entrance or sub-panel) are critical to SPD selection. Our Applications Engineering team can help you with this selection process. 6 a FIGURE VOLTS 4A 240 4B 480 a FIGURE VOLTS 5A 240 a FIGURE VOLTS 7A 480 Figures show the surge protection device connections to the electrical service and detail the transformer secondary configuration. Refer to the Figure No. column in the Selection Guide for assistance in specifying the appropriate device. Protection modes In the U.S.,Canada and China in particular, the neutral conductor is grounded at both the electrical substation and the service entry point, typically where the main service-disconnect is installed. In such circumstances, the main facility SPD, installed at the service entrance, needs only L-N and N-G protection modes (for ground-referenced power systems, which are the most common). The N-G mode is for safety in the event of either a poor connection with the N- G bond or within the grounding system itself. At sub-panels and other locations within a facility that are farther than 10 electrical feet from the service entrance, the addition of an L-G protection mode provides an optimal protection scheme by providing an additional, direct surge-path to ground.
