Whether installed at wireless sites, remote switching centers, data centers, customer service centers or central offices, Joslyn AC surge protectors help the communications industry achieve maximum uptime. innovators of infocom solutions 2 Today, Joslyn products are protecting more than one billion AC and DC circuits worldwide. Comprehensive product line More than 500 standard product configurations are available through Joslyn s extensive AC surge protector line. Ranging from 400kA per phase devices for central office or hut/shelter applications to compact, 20kA per phase units for lower exposure or lower risk applications, Joslyn equipment can readily meet all your surge protection applications. Flexible solutions by design Meeting the unique needs of OEM applications is our specialty. Our Applications Engineering team specializes in providing customized, cost-effective surge protection solutions for your specific requirements. Our extensive familiarity with AC distribution systems worldwide makes Joslyn the infocom industry s leading supplier of both standard and customized AC surge protection solutions. When a custom solution is required for a new or enhanced system, our rapid engineering response and world-class, JIT production system will help you meet your deployment schedule anywhere in the world. Put Joslyn technical expertise to work for you. Joslyn holds many U.S. and European patents. Our engineers participate in IEEE, PEG, NEMA, IEC and other electrical protection standards committees to ensure product design stays attuned to developments within the sciences of electrical protection. Moreover, our expert staff will help you identify and correct application or installation variables that contribute to high-voltage let-through and subsequent equipment damage. You can look to us for help in choosing the protection equipment that is right for your applications and requirements. To assist you in total power systems engineering, Joslyn maintains professional alliances with major power cabinet and electronic equipment manufacturers, as well as electrical and grounding engineering consulting firms. We will coordinate integration of equipment offerings and engineering services to ensure optimal solutions consistent with sound engineering practices.

The new -CNR series features a feed-through (Kelvin) parallel connection.this highly efficient configuration minimizes inductance and lowers the actual clamping voltage by virtually eliminating the lead length of the surge protection device. Joslyn AC Surge Protectors Provide state-of-the-art, field-tested, time-proven MOV and SAD technologies to protect your valuable equipment and keep it on-line to protect your customer revenue streams. Respond instantaneously and reliably to repeated high-current lightning and other transient voltage surges. Accurately indicate operational protection status via jumbo, long-life LEDs. Offer optional remote-monitoring that alerts the Operations Management Center and/or off-site technicians about protection status and power disturbances. maximum performance and reliability reducing (clamping) the high transient voltage to harmless levels. Upon the end of the transient event, the device automatically returns to its normal operating condition without service interruption. Approvals and standards applicable to Joslyn AC surge protectors: ANSI/IEEE C62.11 ANSI/IEEE C62 ANSI/IEEE C62.41 Bellcore TR-NWT-001011 CE per Directive 73/23/EEC CSA Certification cul Feature a modular design, making them highly flexible and customizable for your specific performance and installation requirements. Ensure reliable performance supported by long warranties. IEEE C62.1 RUS acceptance UL 1449, 2nd Edition Method of operation When a transient surge exceeds the normal system voltage, the protection device responds within nanoseconds and changes state from a highimpedance open circuit to a low-impedance shunt (short circuit). Connected in parallel with the facility s loads, the device diverts damaging current away from sensitive loads while simultaneously 3

JOSLYN AC PROTECTORS pigtail Surge protectors for subpanels and cabinets Two sizes and a convenient pigtail design make installation Pigtail protectors, such as 1457-49-R, are available with Form C contact relays to permit remote monitoring. flexible and easy. Devices provide 40kA per phase protection in a compact enclosure. Thermal disconnects and fusing for each MOV plus a sand-filled enclosure permit benign end-of-life mode during sustained line overvoltage conditions, thus eliminating smoke and fire damage to adjacent equipment. 4 open-frame Custom, Open-Frame Protectors offer a choice of bolt-on or plug-in design. Shown: Models 1265-68-MNR and 1265-68-CNR Custom-tailored solutions for infocom OEMs Joslyn leads the industry in the design and manufacture of custom, open-frame AC surge protectors for infocom applications. These spaceefficient protectors reduce voltage let-through and allow easy maintenance and system integration.

FOR ALL INFOCOM APPLICATIONS Plastic, hermetically sealed Noryl housing ensures weatherproof protection for outdoor and indoor installations. Color-coded wiring conforms to U.S. and international standards. When remote monitoring is not required, Joslyn pigtail protectors, such as this 1265-21, are available without relays. Choose from MOV, SAD, and MOV/SAD hybrid technologies in variable primary and secondary configurations. Bolt-on and plug-in modules Virtually unlimited design configurations Wide range of sizes UL-Recognized Flexible monitoring options 5

Surge Protector Voltage Ratings: All models are designed to operate at the referenced nominal system voltage. Maximum Surge Current (refer to ka per Phase column in Selection Guide). This value represents the maximum current amplitude (on an 8/20 µs waveform*) the protector can conduct without causing physical damage and while still retaining protection capacity. It is the sum of the L-N rating plus the L-G rating. *Refer to IEEE 62.41 for definition a b c FIGURE VOLTS VOLTS VOLTS 6A 240 120 208 Minimum Life Expectancy of any surge protection device (SPD) is the result of two primary factors: the frequency and intensity of surge-causing events (e.g., direct or induced lightning, induction, PFC capacitor, load switching, etc.). Therefore, it is imperative to properly select an SPD appropriate for the following factors: 1. the facility s exposure to surges, rather than to the size of the load or service; 2. the criticality or value of the equipment being protected; and 3. the location of the SPD within the facility s power distribution system. Load Ratings (or service amperage) of the secondary distribution system do not represent objective SPD selection criterion since the protection devices are installed in parallel with the loads. Surge currents entering or generated within a facility are completely independent of the substation kva capacity or service amperage. Again, exposure (the likelihood and magnitude of surge events) and SPD location (service entrance or sub-panel) are critical to SPD selection. Our Applications Engineering team can help you with this selection process. 6 a FIGURE VOLTS 4A 240 4B 480 a FIGURE VOLTS 5A 240 a FIGURE VOLTS 7A 480 Figures show the surge protection device connections to the electrical service and detail the transformer secondary configuration. Refer to the Figure No. column in the Selection Guide for assistance in specifying the appropriate device. Protection modes In the U.S.,Canada and China in particular, the neutral conductor is grounded at both the electrical substation and the service entry point, typically where the main service-disconnect is installed. In such circumstances, the main facility SPD, installed at the service entrance, needs only L-N and N-G protection modes (for ground-referenced power systems, which are the most common). The N-G mode is for safety in the event of either a poor connection with the N- G bond or within the grounding system itself. At sub-panels and other locations within a facility that are farther than 10 electrical feet from the service entrance, the addition of an L-G protection mode provides an optimal protection scheme by providing an additional, direct surge-path to ground.
