physical Ethernet connections. This adapter replaces IBM 2-Port 10/100/1000 Base-TX Ethernet PCI-X (#5706) for 7042-CR4. Each server partition will have a physical connection to the network, and the HMC will be logically connected to each partition via its connection to the network. This connection is used to: Provide additional systems management, such as remote sharing support for IBM i system console sessions Collect and pass hardware service events to the HMC for automatic notification of error conditions to IBM Collect the total system inventory Collect and view inventory and partition profile attributes via the System Plan Viewer, providing a full system report One Ethernet connection is required for each server controlled by the console. Either a serial port for modem attachment (100V -- 240V) or an Ethernet connection is required if the Service Agent call home function is implemented. A second Ethernet adapter (#5767) is recommended. Information regarding HMC control of clustered servers under the control of CSM for AIX and CSM for Linux software can be found in the IBM System Cluster 1600 Facts and Features Report available at http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/clu sters/hardware/factsfeatures.html Information regarding supported Linux distributions on System p and System i servers is available at http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/pseries/linux If redundant HMC function is desired, the servers can be attached to two separate HMCs to address availability requirements. Environments may include 7310-C03, -C04, -C05, -C06, -CR2, -CR3, -CR4, and 7042-C06, -CR4, as well as 7042-CO7 HMCs. All HMCs must have the same level of HMC Licensed Machine Code Version 7 (#0962) to manage POWER6 processor-based servers or an environment with a mixture of POWER5, POWER5+, and POWER6 processor-based servers. Higher availability configurations may require the use of an Ethernet hub. An Ethernet hub will provide a physical connection from the HMC to each server rather than a logical Ethernet connection over a LAN. Software requirements: The following Web browsers have been tested for connection support with the HMC Licensed Machine Code V7: Microsoft Internet Explorer 8.0, or later Firefox 1.5.0.6, or later Limitations The HMC is a dedicated-function device used only for the control and service functions of the POWER5, POWER5+, and POWER6 processor-based servers it manages. It is not available for use as a general purpose computing resource. Each console must be configured with a display, a keyboard, and a mouse. Various native language keyboards are planned to be available for the console. The IBM Network Manager Code is not available on the HMC Licensed Machine Code Version 7 (#0962). IBM Network Manager Code is not supported on the POWER6 processor-based servers. Version 7 (#0962) users must use third-party switch management code to support their InfiniBand Switches. The HMC user interface is available in the following languages: Brazilian Portuguese Catalan IBM United States Announcement 108-238 IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 7

Czech Republic Dutch English French German Hungarian Italian Japanese Korean Polish Portuguese Russian Simplified Chinese Slovakian Spanish Traditional Chinese However, integrated Repair and Verify for CRUs is available at this time in English only. Customers who would like access to the translated services guides will be directed to an external Web site from their HMC. If additional assistance is required with interpreting English Repair and Verify: Contact the IBM Hardware Support Center (using the method you would normally use to obtain support for your hardware), and ask for Hardware Support. Be sure to have your HMC machine type and serial number available. Indicate that you have problems with translated Repair and Verify. An IBM Service Support Representative (SSR) may be dispatched to your site to assist with your repair and verify activity. The HMC and attached servers may not be accessible to you while the SSR is working. Planning information Cable orders: One Ethernet cable is required to attach the HMC to the system CPC. This cable can be customer-supplied or purchased from IBM. Security, auditability, and control This product uses the security and auditability features of the server operating system. Use of these facilities is optional. For servers with the IBM i operating system (formerly known as i5/os ), the security measures supplied by IBM i are designed to reduce the risk of users changing or destroying data resources, but do not prevent it. The IBM i security features include the use of passwords, a security option to limit a user to only the functions provided by customer-designed menus, and a security option to limit read/write access for files, libraries, and folders during normal operations. To achieve increased security, the IBM i controls should be combined with physical security, division of duties, and other appropriate measures. This product uses the security and auditability features of the AIX 5.2 or 5.3 operating system on an AIX partition that the HMC controls. The HMC network connection to the partitions is based on a component of IBM's Reliable, Scalable Cluster Technology (RSCT) called Resource Monitoring and Control (RMC). The only operations permitted through this connection are hardware error event collection and hardware inventory data collection, dynamic LPAR resource movement coordination for AIX and Linux partitions, and partition shutdown and reboot for AIX and Linux partitions. The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities. IBM Electronic Services Designed to increase system availability and automatically manage system support. IBM Electronic Service Agent and IBM Electronic Services Web Portal comprise the IBM Electronic Services solution. IBM is dedicated to providing fast, exceptional support to clients who use IBM servers. Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware events, such as system errors and performance issues. Systems enabled with this tool "call home" to IBM Support, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at no additional cost. As part of an increased focus on better service, Electronic Service Agent is configured at installation time for every IBM Power 570, 575, and 595 server. IBM systems support representatives configure the tool when the system is installed, at no charge. In support of this program, a new security white paper describes the secure data exchange between the HMC and the IBM Service Delivery Center (SDC) and the methods and protocols for this exchange. To read the white paper and prepare for Electronic Service Agent installation, visit the Reference Guide section at http://www.ibm.com/support/electronic Integrated with the HMC, and part of the AIX and IBM i (formerly known as i5/os) operating systems, Electronic Service Agent is designed to automatically and electronically report system failures and utilization issues to IBM, resulting in faster problem resolution and increased availability for your systems. System configuration and inventory information collected by Electronic Service Agent can also be viewed by IBM Support for faster problem resolution. The Electronic Services Web Portal is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. This Web portal enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems. The newly improved My Systems and My Search functions make it even easier for you to track system inventory and find pertinent fixes. Benefits Higher availability: Electronic Service Agent is designed to enhance your Warranty or Maintenance Agreement by offering faster hardware error reporting and uploading system information to IBM Support. This can translate to less wasted time monitoring the symptoms, diagnosing the error, and manually calling IBM Support to open a problem record. Around-the-clock monitoring and reporting means no more dependence on human intervention or off-hours customer personnel when errors are encountered in the middle of the night. Security: Electronic Service Agent is secure monitoring, reporting, and storing the data at IBM. Electronic Service Agent securely transmits data either via the Internet or modem, and can be configured to communicate securely through gateways to give you a single point of exit from your site. Communication is one way IBM cannot call into your system. System inventory information is stored in a secure database that is protected behind IBM firewalls. It is treated as confidential information, viewable only by you and IBM. Your business applications or business data is never transmitted to IBM. More accurate reporting: Better reporting and automatic problem routing mean higher system availability and fix confidence. Because system information and error logs are automatically uploaded to the IBM Support Center in conjunction with the service request, you do not need to find and send system information, decreasing the risk of misreported or misdiagnosed errors. Once inside IBM, problem error data is run through a data knowledge management system and knowledge articles are appended to the problem record. Customized support: Using the IBM ID you entered during activation, you can view system and support information in the My Systems and My Search sections of the Electronic Services Web Portal at http://www.ibm.com/support/electronic My Systems offers formatted reports of hardware and software installed using information collected from the systems by Electronic Service Agent. Reports are available for any system associated with your IBM ID. My Search combines the function of search and system information collected by Electronic Service Agent to deliver advanced searching of the IBM technical support knowledgebase, with results customized to your unique system.
