For more information on SmartStart, visit us on the web at: http://www.hp.com/servers/smartstart. O VERVIEW SmartStart is essential to simplify ProLiant server setup, providing a rapid way to deploy reliable and consistent single server configurations. The new SmartStart takes advantage of embedded utilities that conveniently configure server and array controllers from within the system ROMs. SmartStart assists with the OS installation process by preparing the system for installing off-the-shelf versions of leading operating system software and automatically integrating optimized ProLiant server support software drivers, utilities and management agents, known as ProLiant Support Packs. Server deployment just got easier Optimized server deployment is one compelling reason customers use SmartStart. The new SmartStart 6.0 has been re-architected to streamline the server setup process. A new browser-based user interface for easier navigation and provides a wealth of ProLiant product information. New product features improve the performance of the overall server setup process. Leverage Embedded Utilities for Hardware Configuration and Maintenance System configuration is now accomplished through RBSU ROM-Based Setup Utilities by pressing F9 upon system POST Drive array configuration is accomplished through ORCA Option ROM Configuration for Arrays Utility by pressing F8 upon system POST On new selected ProLiant models, run Diagnostics and Inspect utilities through the System Maintenance Menu by pressing F10 upon system POST. Visit www.hp.com/servers/smartstart or the server documentation for more information on which servers provides these features. Assisted Operating System Installation Intuitive menus and streamlined OS interview questions are optimized for easy and consistent OS installation. Install Optimized Drivers SmartStart automatically installs server support software drivers and management agents with every assisted installation Perform Maintenance Functions Directly from SmartStart Array Configuration Utility (ACU) enables you to configure newly added array controllers and associated storage devices Enterprise Diagnostics L32 performs tests on system components ROM Update Utility provides for an express or customized update of the system and option ROMs Easier deployment is just the beginning The ProLiant Foundation Pack contains the essential components you need to set up a reliable and well-integrated server. The SmartStart CD contains SmartStart, server system utilities and operating system support software for servers. The Management CD contains Intelligent Manageability products such as: Insight Manager 7 introduces next-generation version control and system-software update capabilities for ProLiant servers while providing secure, scalable, web-based management servers, clients, clusters, and networking devices. Insight Manager 7 helps IT administrators maximize system availability and reduce cost of ownership by providing instant access to critical management information from anywhere on the corporate network and by revealing potential problems before they result in costly downtime. Management Agents enable immediate access to the proactive fault detection and continual troubleshooting capabilities of Insight Manager, alerting you to potential problems before they cause downtime. HP Management Agents provide the instrumentation that enables fault, performance, and configuration management on HP ProLiant servers The new System Management Homepage displays critical management information through a simple, task-oriented user interface. It provides a consolidated view of all system health and configuration information and simplifies access to the Web-enabled System Management software running on your ProLiant server. ActiveUpdate is a web-based application that keeps IT managers directly connected to HP for proactive notification and delivery of the latest software updates. Subscribe to ActiveUpdate for automatic delivery of software updates for your HP servers, desktops, workstations and portables Version Control Agents - The Version Control Agent provides version control and system update capabilities for a single ProLiant server. The Version Control Agent determines server software status by comparing each component installed on the local device with the set of individual Components or a specified ProLiant Support Paq listed in the Version Control Repository Manager. You may also update individual Components or entire ProLiant Support Paqs by clicking on the install icon located next to the system software status icon. What s New with SmartStart 6.0 New product features improve the performance of the overall server setup process: Reduced the number of reboots while in a SmartStart assisted installation session by taking advantage of ROM-based utilities such as ROM-based Setup Utility (RBSU) and Option ROM Configuration for Arrays Utility (ORCA) to configure the installed hardware Removed the Server Profile diskette Removed the creation of a System Partition. SmartStart 6.0 and future versions will neither create nor have a need for the System Partition Focused on a simple, no network connection and CD-based method for OS installation. Connection to an Integration Server as a target for the OS is not supported. Setup and maintenance utilities can now be run directly from the CD, enabling quick access to Diagnostics, Array Configuration Utility (ACU E), and ROM Update Utility. SmartStart 6.0 support includes: Support for assisted OS Installation requires servers supporting RBSU and ORCA. Servers without RBSU and ORCA support will be supported using SmartStart 5.5. Servers that are RBSU-based include all ProLiant ML/DL G2 and G3 series of servers and the ProLiant ML 310. Assisted OS installation and software delivery for: o Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 o Microsoft Windows 2000 and 2000 SBS o Microsoft Windows.NET Server 2003* o Novell NetWare 5.1 and 5.1 SBS o Novell NetWare 6.0 and 6.0 SBS SmartStart autorun enables access to system support software and ability for software image creation. The autorun is supported on all servers. *The latest tested version of Windows.NET Server 2003 is RC1. Full SmartStart and Autorun support for Windows.NET Server 2003 will be available when this operating system has been officially released by Microsoft. Perform maintenance directly from the SmartStart CD: Array Configuration Utility E (ACU-E) for Smart Array controllers and the StorageWorks RAID Array 4x00 family of products makes it easy to configure and expand disk drive arrays. It is a web-based tool that has a configuration wizard that allows you to configure your array controller, add additional disk drives to an existing configuration or reconfigure your existing disk drive array Enterprise Diagnostics L32 displays information about a server s hardware and software configuration. You can perform hardware and software tests on the following subsystems: Processor, Input devices, Communication ports and devices, Storage devices, Graphics, Memory, Multimedia devices ROM Update Utility provides express and custom options to update system and options ROMs. ProLiant Support Packs Beginning with the release of SmartStart v6.0 in September 2002, Compaq Support Paqs (CSPs) will officially change their name to ProLiant Support Packs (PSPs). The newly renamed ProLiant Support Packs deliver the same functionality as, and are compatible with, Compaq Support Paqs. While documentation and other product areas will be updated to refer to ProLiant Support Packs, some legacy applications or documents might still reference Compaq Support Paqs. In all cases, the terms Compaq Support Paq, CSP, ProLiant Support Pack, and PSP should be regarded as equivalent. DA-11495 World Wide Version 1 November 20, 2002 2
