Easy Note Alpha Disassembly Required Tools Disassembly Instructions Reassembly Instructions

Required Tools All Easy Note Alpha maintenance procedures can be performed using the following tools: Tweezers Small flat-head screwdriver Small Philips screwdriver Right-angled dentist style probe Disassembly Instructions This document contains step-by-step disassembly instructions for the Easy Note Alpha. The instructions are clarified by images of the part that is being removed or disassembled. Furthermore, the screws that are removed are shown next to the image of the parts themselves. When disassembling the system unit, follow these general rules. Do not disassemble the system into parts that are smaller than those specified in the instructions. Label all removed connectors. Note where the connector goes and in what position it was installed. Turn off the power and disconnect all power and all options. Also remove any PC-Cards that are in the PCMCIA slot. 1. Battery Remove the battery pack of the notebook as follows: a. Turn the unit upside down. b. Slide the battery cap upwards to remove it. c. Take out the battery. Fig. 1: Battery cap removal. 2. Memory Next is described how to take out the (optional) memory module(s): a. Remove the memory cap screw (1xA1) (see Fig. 1: ). b. Slide the memory cap open. c. Release the SO-DIMM memory module. d. 3. MDC Modem The following steps describe how to remove the MDC modem: a. Remove the screw of the MDC modem (1x A2) (see Fig. 1: ). b. Take away the cap. c. Remove the two screws (2xB). Fig. 3: MDC modem screws. d. Release the modem. e. Finally, take out the MDC modem. 4. Jack Door Assembly The jack door assembly holding the RJ-11 and RJ-45 connectors should be removed according to the next steps: a. Remove the screws (1xE) (see Fig. 1: ). b. Take away the jack door assembly. c. Take away the RJ-11 connector. Disassembly and Reassembly - 4

Fig. 4: RJ-11 connector. 5. Indicator Cover and Keyboard Remove the keyboard as follows: a. Use a thick paperclip to unlock the indicator cove. b. Slide indicator cover to the left to remove it. c. Disconnect the indicator board. d. Take away the indicator cover. Fig. 5: Indicator cover. e. Remove the four screws (4xE). f. Take away the indicator PCB from the cover. Fig. 6: Indicator PCB. g. Lift the keyboard and disconnect the keyboard flat cable. h. The keyboard is now free. Fig. 7: Disconnecting the keyboard cable. 6. Palm Rest and Touchpad Disassemble the palm rest and the touchpad as follows: a. Turn the unit upside down. b. Remove the four screws (4xD). Fig. 8: Palm rest screws. c. Turn the unit right side up. d. Slightly lift the palm rest. e. Disconnect the touchpad cable. Disassembly and Reassembly - 6

Fig. 9: Touchpad cable. f. Take away the palm rest. g. Remove the six screws (6xE). Fig. 10: The touchpad screws. h. Lift out the touchpad. i. Lift out the touchpad buttons. 7. Heat Sink Here you can find the instructions for removing the heat sink: a. Remove the six screws (4xF, 1xA, 1xG) that hold the heat sink. Note Remove and place the screws (4xF) in the order indicated. Disassembly and Reassembly - 7

Fig. 11: Heat sink screws. b. Take away the heat sink. 8. CD-ROM Drive Remove the CD-ROM drive as follows: a. Turn the unit upside down. b. Remove the two bottom CD-ROM drive screws (2xD). Fig. 12: Bottom CD-ROM drive screws. c. Turn the unit right side up. d. Remove the screw (1xA) that holds the CD-ROM from the top (see fig Fig. 10: ). e. Slide out the CD-ROM drive. 9. Hard Disk Drive and Charger Shield These instructions explain how to remove the hard disk drive and its brackets: a. Remove the two screws (1xH, 1xI). b. Take away the charger shield. c. Remove one screw (1xI). Fig. 13: Charger shield and HDD screws. d. Lift the HDD out of its bay. e. Disconnect the HDD flatcable from the HDD. f. Remove the four screws (4xK). Fig. 14: HDD and its brackets. g. The brackets are now free. Disassembly and Reassembly - 9

10. LCD Screen Remove the LCD screen according to the following procedure: a. Remove the screws (1xE). b. Take away the lid switch board. c. Close the LCD screen and turn the unit upside down. d. Remove two screws (2xD). Fig. 15: LCD-hinge bottom screws. e. Remove two screws (2xD0) from the back of the system. Fig. 16: LCD-hinge rear screws. f. Turn the unit right side up and open the LCD screen. g. Squeeze the hinge cap ears as indicated below, and slide the hinge caps outwards. h. Remove four screws (2xI, 1xA, 1xH). i. Fig. 17: The shielding screws and cable connections. j. Remove the shielding. k. Disconnect the LCD lid switch cable. l. Disconnect the two LCD cables from the base unit. m. Take away the LCD panel. 11. LCD Panel Disassembly Below you can find the complete set of steps required for disassembling the LCD panel and all of its subcomponents: a. Remove the four bumpers (2xZ, 2xY) b. Remove four screws (2xD, 2xE). c. Remove the front bezel. Disassembly and Reassembly - 10

Disconnect the backlight cable from the inverterboard. i. Slide the shielding from the inverterboard. j. Disconnect the signal cable from the inverterboard. k. Remove four screws (4xO). l. Remove both the left and the right bracket. m. Remove both the left and the right hinge bracket. n. Remove the bottom bracket. Disassembly and Reassembly - 11

Remove the six screws (2xD, 1xH, 1xL, 1xG, 1xI). c. Unlock the top cover. d. Take away the top cover. Fig. 22: Top cover screws. e. Remove the HDD cable from the mainboard. f. Remove cable from mainboard to indicator board. g. Remove the three screws (3xD) holding the right CD-ROM rail. h. Take away the right CD-ROM rail (large triangle shape). i. Remove the two screws (2xD) holding the left CD-ROM rail. j. Take away the left CD-ROM rail (small black rail). Disassembly and Reassembly - 13

Fig. 23: The CD-ROM rail and screws. 13. Floppy Disk Drive Follow the steps below to in order to remove the floppy disk drive: a. Remove the floppy disk drive screw (1xD). b. Disconnect the FDD cable from the mainboard. Fig. 24: The floppy disk drive screw. c. Slightly lift the floppy disk drive. d. Disconnect the FDD cable from the floppy disk drive. e. Remove the floppy disk drive. f. Remove the four screws (4xM). Disassembly and Reassembly - 14

Fig. 25: Floppy disk drive assembly. g. The FDD bracket is now free. 14. Audio Board and Speaker Below you can find the procedure for removing the audio board and the speakers: a. Disconnect the speaker cables from audio board to DJ module. b. Disconnect flatcable from audio board to mainboard. c. Remove four screws (4xD). d. Remove the cover of the DJ module. e. Remove the audio board. f. Remove the speaker assembly. Fig. 26: Audio board. 15. Charger Board and Fans Follow the steps below to remove and disassemble the charger board and the fans: a. Remove the charger board. b. Disconnect the fans. c. Take away the fans. Disassembly and Reassembly - 15

Fig. 27: Charger board and fans. Note During (re)assembly, first connect the fans, then place them (with the CE markings facing down). 16. CPU Below is explained how you should remove the CPU: a. Unlock the CPU with a flatbed screwdriver. Fig. 28: Unlocking the CPU. Note To lock the CPU, the screwdriver needs to be inserted in the other hole than the one used for unlocking the CPU. Apply some force to properly lock the CPU. b. Remove the CPU from the socket Disassembly and Reassembly - 16

17. Mainboard The procedure below explains how to remove the mainboard from the bottom base assembly: a. Remove the screws (2xA) from the top metal brackets top left and top right. b. Remove the two screws (2xD) holding the mainboard. Fig. 29: Removing the screws holding the mainboard from above. c. Remove the six hex bolts (6xM) from the rear. Fig. 30: Removing the screws holding the mainboard from the rear. d. Take away the mainboard. Note that the PC-Card release pins need to be completely pressed. e. Take out the metal I/O shield. f. Turn the unit upside down. g. Remove the four feet from the base unit. h. Remove the two rubber feet from the base unit. Disassembly and Reassembly - 17
