Creating a New Flder Befre we begin with Micrsft Wrd, create a flder n yur Desktp named Summer PD. T d this, right click anywhere n yur Desktp and a menu will appear. Scrll dwn t New and anther menu will appear. Select Flder and a new flder will appear. Simply type the Summer PD as the name f the flder can save all f yur practice wrk in this flder.. Nw, yu Starting Wrd T run Micrsft Wrd, click n the Start icn n the taskbar t display the Start menu in the bttm left hand crner f the Desktp. Mve the muse pinter nt Prgrams and click n Micrsft Wrd. If yu a have the Wrd icn placed n yur Desktp, yu can als run Wrd by duble-clicking n the icn.. 1
The Wrd windw When yu pen Wrd, a blank dcument is autmatically pened fr yu. The Wrd windw cntains several imprtant areas: Menu Acrss the tp f the windw is the menu bar which cntains drp-dwn menus allwing yu t access all f Wrd s functins. T see the menu items, click nce n the menu name. Where a menu item has an arrw t the right f it, clicking n it will reveal a further sub-menu. Tlbars Belw the menu bar yu will find ne r mre tlbars called the Standard tlbar and the Frmatting tlbar belw it. The Standard tlbar cntains icns t perfrm cmmn tasks such as cpy and paste. There are a number f ther tlbars available in Wrd. T shw r hide them, click n the View menu and select Tlbars. This shws a list f all tlbars. T shw a tlbar click n its name. Clicking n a tlbar with a check mark next t its name will hide it. 2

SAVE! T save the current Wrd dcument, chse Save frm the File menu. The first time yu save a new dcument, the Save As dialg bx is displayed. Select the directry yu want t save yur file in by clicking n the dwn arrw t the right f the Save in: bx. Type a name fr yur dcument in the File name: bx. In this case, name the file Mary and save it t yur Desktp. Finally, click n the Save buttn. 5
Nw, yu will see that the dcument s name has nw changed t Mary in the title bar. The next time yu save this dcument, the Save As dialg bx will nt appear. Chse Save frm the file menu, hit Cntrl and S simultaneusly r the Save icn in the standard tlbar. If yu want t save yur dcument with a different name, chse Save As frm the File menu t bring up the Save As dialg bx. It is a gd practice t save ften! Depending n hw yur cmputer is imaged, yur cmputer shuld autmatically save the file yu are wrking n in a set time interval. T check this setting: 1. On the Tls menu, click Optins, and then click the Save tab. 2. Select the Save AutRecver inf every check bx. 3. In the minutes bx, specify hw ften yu want yur Micrsft Office prgram t save files. Nte: D nt use AutRecver as a substitute fr regularly saving yur wrk! 6
Becming Familiar with Wrd Type the fllwing verse in yur dcument: Mary had a little lamb Its fleece was white as snw And everywhere that Mary went That lamb was sure t g. Once the text is typed, perfrm the fllwing peratins t manipulate the text: 1. Select a new fnt fr the text. 2. Select a new clur fr each line f text. 3. Center the text in the dcument. 4. Underline the wrd lamb in the verse. 5. Bld the name Mary. 6. Italicize the wrds fleece and snw. 7. Add clip art frm the Micrsft Clipart Gallery f a lamb t the dcument and center it n the page. The Clip Art task pane will pen. In the Search fr bx, type the wrd lamb. Click G. In the results bx, chse the clip art that yu want t use and click n the clip t insert it int the Mary dcument. Helpful Hints 1. Highlight all the text in yur Wrd dcument by: Clicking n Edit > Select All, r 8
Using yur muse t run frm the tp f the file t the bttm, r On yur PC, hlding dwn the Cntrl and the "A" keys simultaneusly. Highlight -- Yu will knw that the text is highlighted because the backgrund and letters f highlighted cntent are in reverse frm their nrmal state (black backgrund with white letters is the highlighted state fr nrmal black letters n a white backgrund). D nt let yur muse "tuch dwn" anywhere in the dcument's windw, r the highlighting will g away, and yu will have t start ver again. 2. Cpy the highlighted text int yur cmputer's temprary strage (the "Clipbard" in a PC) by - Clicking n Edit > Cpy, r On yur PC, press the Cntrl and the "C" keys simultaneusly. 3. Mve yur cursr t where the cpied item is t be placed - Then, click n Edit > Paste, r On yur PC, press the Cntrl and the "V" keys simultaneusly. Right clicking n yur dcument will als pp a menu that yu can use as a means f a shrtcut. 9
