Grants.gov Manual for Macintosh Users Includes information on Citrix installation, Downloading and Completing PureEdge application files and Uploading files to ORSA s website January 6, 2006 This manual contains original material and excerpts from the Grants.gov manual found at www.grants.gov. It was created by the Office of Research Administration for use by University of Maryland staff. Modified 01/13/2006 for University of Oregon by Office of Research Services and Administration (ORSA) Page 1 of 18

General Information Links to the files you need (Citrix client, Citrix connection file) are located on ORSA website in the Grants.gov Macintosh section. Download PureEdge Application package and directions to your Macintosh first. You will need to create a folder in your DOCUMENTS folder and save them in there. NOTE: If you have Adobe Acrobat 6.0 installed on your machine, it will try to open the PureEdge file and you ll get an error message. Just close Adobe. The Citrix client is for systems running OS X and PowerPC only. Make sure that you have your Macintosh configured to add the extensions to the file names (Example: doc, pdf, xfd, etc.) Attaching files to the PureEdge application package: You will not be able to view the files once you have attached them because you are connected to the server at Grants.gov and they don t have Adobe or Word installed. If you try to view your Adobe documents they open in Notepad and are garbled. Word docs open in Wordpad. Your files are there and are correct. ORSA will check them before we submit to Grants.gov. Once you are connected to the Citrix server, save your file often!! If you mistakenly close the Browser window, you are disconnected from the server and will lose your information if you haven t been saving it to your hard drive. Page 3 of 18

Downloading Application Packages from Grants.gov Download PureEdge Application package and directions to your Macintosh first. You will need to create a folder in your DOCUMENTS folder and save them in there. NOTE: If you have Adobe Acrobat installed on your machine, it will try to open the PureEdge file and you ll get an error message. Just close Adobe. Download a Grant Application Package and Application Instructions In order to download an application package and its instructions, you will need to enter the CFDA and/or Funding Opportunity number for that grant. As of January, 2006, not all applications are available for download on Grants.gov. To view the list of the grants currently available on Grants.gov, click the Grants.gov Programs List (http://www.grants.gov/assets/grantsgovprogramslist.pdf) found on the Get Started page under Step 2 Download and application package. NOTE: NIH funding opportunities have multiple CFDA numbers. For NIH application packages, go to NIH s Funding Opportunities page and look at the Funding Announcements and the Program Announcements. There will be a direct link to the application package on Grants.gov s website. http://grants1.nih.gov/grants/guide/index.html To download an application package go to https://apply.grants.gov/forms_apps_idx.html Enter the CFDA number of the agency which is offering the opportunity for which you want to apply in the CFDA Number field. OR Enter the Funding Opportunity Number of the opportunity for which you want to apply in the Funding Opportunity Number field. Page 4 of 18

If you do not know the Funding Opportunity Number or CFDA Number for the grant for which you want to apply, you will need to search for the grant opportunity following the steps in Searching Grant Synopses. If you know the CFDA number or Funding Opportunity Number you can check the Grants.gov Programs List found by clicking the button Get Started at the top of any Grants screen and going to Step 2 Download an Application Package. You must complete at least one of these fields to download an application. Click the Download Package button to download the application package. This will take you to the Selected Grant Applications for Download screen. To download an application package and its instructions, click the corresponding download link. Be sure to download both. When you download an application package, you will first be taken to the Download Opportunity Application Package screen. Page 5 of 18

Confirm that you are downloading the correct application for the grant for which you want to apply. If you would like to be notified of any changes to this opportunity, enter your email address in the field and then click the Submit button. NOTE: ORSA strongly recommends that you enter your email address here. If a change is made to this form and you have the old one, it will cause problems when ORSA tries to submit your final version of the PureEdge file. If you choose not to enter your email address and the application package is deleted or modified, upon submitting the application package to Grants.gov, you may receive a rejection notice. Click the Download Application Instructions link. Locate your DOCUMENTS folder on your Macintosh hard drive. Create a new folder for this application. Save your instructions in this folder. Click the Download Application Package link. Save this file to your new folder in your DOCUMENTS folder also. Page 6 of 18

INSTALLATION OF THE CITRIX CLIENT The Citrix Client and Connection File Follow the link on ORSA s Grants.gov website to download the Citrix client. Save the application on your hard drive. Also locate the Citrix Connection file (PEClientCitrix.ica) file on ORSA s website and save it to your hard drive. This is the connection file that you will need later. IMPORTANT: Close your browser before installing the Citrix Client file. Locate the Citrix client file on your hard drive. Double click on it and follow the defaults for the installation. Then locate your Citrix connection file (PEClientCitrix.ica). Double click on it. You may see the window below. If so, just click OPEN and it should connect you to the server at Grants.gov/NIH. Once the client connects you should see the warning message below. Just click OK. Page 7 of 18

Opening and Completing the PureEdge Application File Once you have logged on, the browser application opens. You may see one of the windows below. From whichever window you see, select FILE from the menu bar. Then choose OPEN. You will see the window below. Click on the BROWSE button. Page 8 of 18

The Look In window appears. Click on the drop down icon (triangle) in the LOOK IN box. You may see a window similar to the one below appear. Just click OK. Clicking on the drop down triangle will give you a list of options. Select C$ on Client (C:) by double clicking it. This is your Macintosh hard drive. You will then see a window similar to the one below (on the next page). Click on the drop down box next to FILES OF TYPE and select ALL FILES. Then double click on the folder called DOCUMENTS. Page 9 of 18

Open the folder you created for the PureEdge file and you should see a file with an XFD extension. Double click on it to open it. This will open the file to the cover page of the PureEdge application. See the example on the next page. Please note that the settings for your connection to their Citrix server have the screen resolution set for 800 x 600. You will need to set the image size to 75% to be able to see the entire form on your monitor. IMPORTANT: At no time should you close the Internet Explorer window unless you have saved your document to your hard drive. ALL CHANGES WILL BE LOST. Closing the window breaks your connection to the CITRIX SERVER. Page 10 of 18

You will then need to locate the correct Federal funding opportunity, download its application and then apply. Page 11 of 18

If the Federal funding opportunity listed is the opportunity for which you want to apply, you will need to complete the application in its entirety before submitting it. If you have any application specific questions, you can contact the offering agency directly using the contact information provided on the application's cover page. Completing the Cover Page Enter a name for the application in the Application Filing Name field. NOTE: There is a limit on the number of characters you can enter.
