Downloading & Reading ebooks On A Kindle You bought the Kindle and have downloaded books from the Kindle Store. Cool! You ve also heard that you can get free ebooks to download from your local library s website. But how does that work? This handout will explain the process of downloading a book to your Kindle, reading the book, and returning the book. On your computer, open a web browser, such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Chrome. Go to your local library s website, such as http://www.amarillolibrary.org. Navigate to the OverDrive link to ebooks. Look for icons such as those to the right. Click the OverDrive logo, as shown to the right. To the right is a screenshot of the OverDrive website for the Harrington Library Consortium. (HLC). Tip! After arriving at the OverDrive home page, Bookmark it/add it to your favorites. Now, the next time you want to download an ebook for your Kindle, just go to your favorites. Begin by logging into your account. Click the Login button in the header of the page. Now enter your library card barcode number and PIN and click the Sign In button. If you don t remember your PIN, please call your local library. The quickest way to the ebook section, is to find the blue navigation bar on the left. Scroll down to almost the bottom. Click on the link, View all ebooks. Tip! The direct web address is http://tinyurl.com/7zd3czp which you can bookmark! The landing page, for ebooks, is shown to the right. It is recommended that you Sign In first which will make the checkout process go smoother. You ll need your library card number and pin. The search box, indicated by the red arrow, will allow you to focus your search on ebooks. After you find the book, you would like to download, you ll see the details for downloading. First: Make sure to locate the Kindle Book format. Click the appropriate Add To Cart link. Now, it s decision time ;-) Most importantly, make sure it says Kindle Book!. You now have some choices: o Proceed to checkout o Continue browsing for another book (you can check out a total of two). o Click Remove to start all over. Check Out Page Be sure to select the appropriate length, for the checkout period. Click the Confirm Checkout button. Notice: You still have time to back out by clicking the Remove link. Notice the date checked out and the expiration date. Click the Get for Kindle button. Voilà! That link just took you to the Kindle Store, on the Amazon website, where you can download the book to your Kindle. Your Amazon Account When you received your Kindle, the Setup process directed you to Register your Kindle, under your Amazon Store Account. First, you should make sure that you log in or are already logged in to the same Amazon account with which you registered the Kindle. Next, you need to select the Delivery Method to use in downloading the ebook to your Kindle. Last, but not least, click the Get Library Book button. WiFi Download Method You should then see a screen stating that your public library book has been delivered to your Kindle. Your Kindle will download the library book, the next time it connects to Wi-Fi. If you would like to manage your digital titles, go to Manage Your Kindle Public library books require an active Wi-Fi connection for wireless delivery to a Kindle device. Library books will not be delivered via your Kindle's 3G connection. If you try to send to a Kindle device and do not have an active Wi-Fi connection, you may instead choose to load your library book via USB. Both Mac and Windows users can manage Kindle content through a USB connection. Book Expiration - Three days before the end of the loan period, we will send a courtesy reminder e-mail about the loan expiration. Once the loan period has ended, an additional e-mail notification will be sent. Availability of books and length of loan are determined by your local library. USB Download Method After selecting the Delivery Method of Via Computer, click the Get Library Book button. Next, click the Download button. If the yellow Information Bar appears, as shown to the right, click it and select run/allow. Your Kindle should be plugged into your computer. In the Save As dialog box, as shown to the right, click once on the My Computer(1) icon, on the left. Next locate the Kindle(2) icon Double-click the Kindle icon. Make sure it says Save In Kindle, at the top of the dialog box. Double-click the Documents folder. Click the Save button. It may take a few minutes to download the book, depending on the speed of your computer and the length of the book. To return a title early, use your computer to log into your Amazon account. Use the navigation menu in the left-hand column to select Kindle Manage Your Kindle. You should now see a list of the titles in your Kindle ebook collection. Across from the name of the library ebook you would like to return, use the Actions drop-down menu to select Delete from library. You will also use this method to delete a title whose loan period has expired. To delete an expired title from the Kindle itself, use the 5-way controller to highlight the book. Click the right arrow button. Now click the select button to activate the remove from device alert that will appear on screen. Happy Reading!
