Preface This manual provides information about how to install and configure the XLmanage remote management application. Audience This manual is intended for System Administrators responsible for installing and configuring this remote management application. Manual Structure This manual contains the following information: Chapter 1. Introduction Provides an overview of XLmanage and describes the main XLmanage features. Chapter 2. Installing XLmanage Explains how to prepare for and install XLmanage. Chapter 3. Installing XLmanage Service Packs Details steps to install service packs. Chapter 4. Example: File menu, Configuration dialog-box, Save, etc. Filenames The guide contains screen shots of various dialog-boxes and windows for reference. These screen shots may be different from what you see on your screen, depending on your operating system and its configuration. iv

Chapter 1. Introduction 1.1 About XLmanage XLmanage is a remote management application that allows system administrators to efficiently control and configure single or multiple thin clients in enterprise deployments of any size. 1.2 Features of XLmanage Supports thin clients running Windows XPe and Linux. Automatically register new clients when they are first powered up on the network Configure properties and manually for single or multiple clients. Save client configuration information to a file for use as a template to configure other clients. This file can also be edited if required. Automatically apply configuration defined for the group, when new clients are added. Upgrade firmware to single or multiple clients. Create and configure connection entries for single or multiple clients. Scheduling of configurations, firmware and applications. Create Groups, Sub-groups to organize clients based on a subnet or IP range or other custom parameters. Create Views for organizing clients to your preference. Deploy applications to XPe thin clients singly or in a group. Shadowing of clients using VNC. Client Control like Shutdown, reboot or wake-up clients. XLmanage Installation Guide 1

Chapter 2. Installing XLmanage Note: If you are installing XLmanage in a WAN where you use the features such as Find New Clients and Wake on LAN, you must install XLmanage Proxy utility. For more information, see Appendix C, Installing XLmanage Proxy Utility in XLmanage User s Guide. The steps enumerated in this manual may be slightly different, depending on your operating system and its configuration. 2.1 XLmanage Software Requirements The following lists detail software requirements for the system on which you install XLmanage. Operating System Ensure that you install XLmanage on one of the following operating systems. Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition (SP1 or higher) Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition (SP1 or higher) Windows XP Professional (SP1 or higher) Windows 2000 Advanced Server (SP4 or higher) Windows 2000 Server (SP4 or higher) Windows 2000 Professional (SP4 or higher) Windows 2003 64-bit OS (Prerequisite: DOT NET Framework 2.0 or higher) Notes: Ensure that IE 7.0 is not installed Install Windows Installer version 3.0 or higher. Refer to Microsoft Web site for more information. Note: MSDE is packaged as part of XLmanage. It can be installed during installation, if database is not installed earlier. 2.2 Hardware Requirements: Pentium IV Processor 512 MB RAM, 1 GB preferred 150 MB Hard Disk free space 2.3 Network Requirements Port Protocol Purpose 80 HTTP All XLmanage communications 21 FTP FTP (Used only for Repository) 161, 162 SNMP Utility upgrade 5500, 5800, 5900 VNC Remote shadows devices (Reserved) You will need the following network privileges to properly install the XLmanage management application: Domain administrator access or in case of workgroups, you should have administrator privileges. For example: be able to set up and configure user accounts on the network. If you plan to install the XLmanage database on Microsoft SQL server, you will need to have system administrator or SQL Administrator privileges on that SQL server. Note: When Installing XLmanage remotely through RDP, ensure that you open RDP session using mstsc /v:ipaddress /console for Windows.XP Professional Service Pack 2 and below and Windows Server 2003. For Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 and Vista Service Pack 1 and above, replace the /command switch with the /admin switch. XLmanage Installation Guide 4

2.4 Configuring IIS To configure IIS, you must configure the default Web site and the default FTP site as described in the following sections. Note: Ensure that Internet Information Services (IIS) Windows component, including the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) component, is installed on the computer you are configuring. See your system documentation for more information about these Windows components. 2.4.1 Configuring the Default Web Site Perform the following steps to configure the default Web site. 1. Click Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager. 2. Click IIS Manager > Properties. In the Default Web site Properties dialog box, ensure the following: In the Description text box, type Default Web Site. Note: If your installation is in a language other than English, ensure that the name is specified in English as shown above. IP address: All Unassigned TCP port: 80 (Mandatory) Host Header Value: Empty (Should be blank) Default Web Site Properties Description, IP Address and TCP Port XLmanage Installation Guide 5

3. From the Directory Security tab, click Edit in the Authentication and access control area. Select Enable anonymous access, as shown below. Default Web site Properties Authentication Methods 4. After making any default Web site properties changes, restart the Web site. Note: The first time you install IIS, all the IIS settings discussed above are applied to the default Web site. 2.4.2 Configuring the Default FTP Site Perform the following steps to configure the default FTP site. 1. Click Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager. 2. From the Internet Information Services dialog box, right-click the Default FTP Site and select Properties to open the Default FTP Site dialog box. 3. Select the Home Directory tab. 4. Enable the Write option in the FTP Site Directory area, as shown in the following figure. XLmanage Installation Guide 6

Click OK and then close the Internet Information Services dialog box and the Administrative Tools dialog box. 2.5 Configuring Database If MS SQL Server is already installed, ensure that: The MS-SQL Server Service is running. All windows database-related windows (MS-SQL Server 2000, 2005, Express Edition. MSDE 2000A) are closed. In SQL Server Service Manager, select the Server Name and Server IP of the server where XLmanage is being installed. SQL Server Service Manager Screen 2.6 Installing XLmanage 1. Double-click the XLmanage_x.yy.exe file to display the XLmanage version information screen. XLmanage Installation Guide 7

2. Click Next to continue to the Caution screen. 3. Click Next to continue to the License Agreement screen. 4. Click I Accept to accept the license agreement and continue installation. 5. From the Customer Information screen, specify an XLmanage user name and your company name. By default, a 30-day trial installation is installed. Click Next to proceed. For information about how to obtain a permanent license key, see XLmanage User s Guide at support.clearcube.com. 6. Confirm the destination folder for installing XLmanage. 7. Set the program folder for this application. By default, the application is installed in C:\Program Files\XLmanage. You can click Browse to change the default folder, and then click Next to continue. 8. XLmanage supports the following databases: MSDE MS SQL Server 2000 MSDE 2000A MS SQL Server 2005 MS SQL Server 2005 Express Edition If any of these databases are already installed on the computer, database installation is skipped. If a database is not on the computer, select the Install MSDE Database option. XLmanage Installation Guide 8

Specify values in the Data Source Name, Login ID, and Password fields and click Next to display the installation summary screen. 9. The installation settings screen summarizes your installation choices. Click Back to make any changes or click Install to start installation. 10. A progress bar displays the progress of the installation. XLmanage Installation Guide 9

11. When the installation is complete, click Finish to close the installer window 12. The default browser is launched and a message is displayed confirming that XLmanage is installed and configured correctly. Chapter 3. Installing XLmanage Service Packs Install service packs to upgrade from older version of XLmanage to newer versions. Due to feature addition and changes, the current service pack cannot be applied to XLmanage versions below 1.26d. Always refer to the Software Release Notes (SRN) for XLmanage supported firmware builds. 3.1 Prerequisites Before installing any service packs, ensure that you close any database-related applications. 3.2 Installing Service-Packs Perform the following steps to install a service pack. 1. Double-click XLmanage_Servicepack_x.yy.exe to install the service pack. The XLmanage Service Pack widow is displayed. If XLmanage 1.42 or higher is installed, click Start Install. The progress bar indicates the installation progress. XLmanage is launched when installation is complete. If XLmanage 1.41 or below is installed, the following details are requested. 2. After entering the details, click Start Install. The progress bar indicates installation progress. On completion, a message is displayed confirming that XLmanage service pack is installed and configured correctly. XLmanage Installation Guide 13

Chapter 4. Troubleshooting Error Messages The following list shows common XLmanage error messages and provides workarounds. Message Default Web Site not configured. Please create with Port 80, IPAddress as All Unassigned and Host header value NULL. Solution This message might be displayed during an aborted XLmanage installation. Ensure that you have configured IIS correctly, as described in section 2.4.1 Configuring IIS. Message Default Web Site should be configured with Port 80, Host header value NULL, IPAddress as All Unassigned and Web site should be running. Solution This message might be displayed during an aborted XLmanage installation. Ensure that you have configured IIS correctly, as described in section 2.4.1 Configuring IIS. Message XLmanage supports MSSQLServer 2000 Ver 8.0 / MSDE 2000A Ver 8.0, Installation will abort. Solution Ensure that one of the following databases is installed on the computer running XLmanage: MS SQL Server Version 8.0 MSDE 2000A Version 8.0 XLmanage Installation Guide 14

Message The page cannot be displayed is displayed when your attempt to display the URL http://localhost/vxlserver.dll. Solution Perform any of the following steps: When Installing XLmanage remotely using RDP, ensure that you open the RDP session using the mstsc /v:ipaddress /consol command. Ensure that VXLServer.dll is located on the default Web site. Ensure that IIS services are running. XLmanage Installation Guide 15
