CSIS10A Installation Instructions for setting up the BlueJ Java IDE I. Install Java JDK (NOT JRE!) 1) To use the BlueJ IDE in this class, you must first download the latest Java JDK from the following website: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk6-jsp-136632.html (Note: to keep this window open you may want to COPY and PASTE the previous link into another tab in your web browser) (Note: Macintosh family users will need to obtain the developer environment from http://developer.apple.com/java/download/)
2) Click the gray download button above, then in the following window, select platform Windows and click the red continue button shown here:
3) Another page comes up (below). Click the red link below. 4) You should then find the downloader asking whether to save the file. NOTE: If you are blocking popups in Internet Explorer, you may get a notification at the top of your browser window (blue line below this line). Just click and enable download. When the File Download begins
5) Choose SAVE and save it to your desktop. When finished, click run or double click the program. Click through all security warnings. 6) Click NEXT in the next few windows 7)
8) Wait while the program installs 9) Choose NEXT to keep the default storage location 10) The Installer will then ask to close your browser. Click Close Browsers and Continue. 11) Wait until the installation finishes. 12) Click Finish to bypass the Registration process. 13) Once the Installer disappears, you may then move on to installing the BlueJ IDE II. 14) Download the appropriate version of BlueJ for your computer at the following link: http://www.bluej.org/download/download.html Go directly to Step 2 below (you have already installed Java JDK) 15) Click on the appropriate platform and choose SAVE at the File Download prompt. Save it to your Desktop. Then when finished, click RUN or double click the program. Click through any security warnings. 16) Close any unnecessary programs and click next. Click all the NEXT buttons in the dialogues that follow, then click INSTALL on the last one. 17) After BlueJ finishes installing, you can now install the ObjectDraw Library into BlueJ III. Install ObjectDraw Library 18) Download objectdraw by clicking the link and choose SAVE http://www.mpcfaculty.net/tom_rebold/csis10a/objectdrawv1.1.2.jar
19) Click on Computer: 20) Click on your C Drive: 21) Click on BlueJ Folder:
22) Click on lib: 23) Click on userlib: 24) And Finally, click SAVE
25) Once the objectdraw library is installed, you can now test your installation of BlueJ IV. Testing your BlueJ Installation 26) Click on this TestBlueJ link to test your installation and click OK to open the download. 27) Click OK in the window that comes next to Open with Windows Explorer: 28) You ll get a Temp folder open up. Right-click the TestBlueJ folder and choose Copy as shown here:
29) Now make a CSIS10A folder on your Desktop or in your Documents folder and open that folder. 30) Right-click on the white area in the folder view and choose PASTE. 31) You ll now have the TestBlueJ folder present in your CSIS10A folder. Open that folder and double click on the package.bluej file. 32) This will bring up BlueJ to allow you to run the test program. Right-click on the <<applet>> TestBlueJ box and choose new TestBlueJ
33) If everything worked ok, you ll get the following message in the BlueJ canvas: 34) Congratulations!! 35) If you ran into problems along the way, you can email your instructor with a description of the problem and any error messages you get. If you have a laptop, you can bring it into class as well. 36) While you are at it, this is a good time to check you are showing file extensions, which can be helpful when programming using data files which we will do later in class. At the top of your CSIS10A folder choose Tools>FolderOptions: 37) Click on the View tab and UNCHECK the box that says Hide Extensions for Known File Types so it looks like this: (and click OK)
38) Congratulations! Your Java, Bluej and Objectdraw programs are properly installed!!!
