Exporting Files from Succeed for use in Canvas Modules

1 Canvas Support This guide will inform you how to export individual files or groups of files from Succeed modules and import them into Canvas. This technique should only be used for items to be repurposed. It does not entail or encourage the wholesale copying of folders of content directly from Succeed into Canvas. Exporting a file from Succeed Files may be exported from Succeed individually, or in batches (as compressed.zip files). Individual files may be exported from the folder they are hosted in the Succeed module, or from the Module s Content Collection area. Batches of files may be exported through the Content Collection area. Exporting an individual file from its location in Succeed 1. Log into Succeed and navigate to the relevant module. 2. Ensure the Edit Mode is set to On. 3. Navigate to the containing folder. 4. Click on the file to display it. What happens next depends on the file type and the browser setup: - If the file is a PDF then it will either open in the embedded frame of the browser, or in a new browser tab. Either way, when the file is displayed, click the Download button to download the file (Figure 1). - If the file is a Word document or PowerPoint presentation the browser will likely bring up a Save As Dialogue box directly (as it cannot display the file). Figure 1 - The Download button in the browser's PDF viewer 5. A Save As dialogue box opens (Figure 2). 6. Select a folder into which to save the file, edit its filename (optional) and click Save. 2 Figure 2 - The Save As dialogue box 7. Repeat the above steps for further files. Exporting a single file from the Content Collection in Succeed 1. Log into Succeed and navigate to the relevant module. 2. Ensure the Edit Mode is set to On. 3. In the Module Management Control Panel, navigate to the Content Collection for the module. This is done by expanding the Content Collection area and then clicking on the Module ID listed under it (Figure 3). Figure 3 - Navigating to the Content Collection area in Succeed 4. Succeed will display the contents of the Content Collection. Be mindful that only the first 25 items are shown, and so you may need to click on Show All button (at the bottom of the page) to see all the items (Figure 4). Page 2 of 6

3 Figure 4 - The Show All button 5. You may require to click on a folder title to enter that folder in the Content Collection to find the file(s) you want. If you do this, to return up one level in the Content Collection, use the Go to Parent Folder icon (Figure 5). Figure 5 - The Go to parent folder icon 6. To download a single file, right-click on it and, from the menu that comes up, select Save Link As (in Chrome and Firefox) or Save Target As (in Internet Explorer). Select a folder into which to save the file, edit its filename (optional) and click Save (as shown in Figure 2). Page 3 of 6

4 Exporting multiple files from the Content Collection in Succeed 1. Log into Succeed and navigate to the relevant module. 2. Ensure the Edit Mode is set to On. 3. In the Module Management Control Panel, navigate to the Content Collection for the module. This is done by expanding the Content Collection area and then clicking on the Module ID listed under it (as shown in Figure 3). 4. Succeed will display the contents of the Content Collection. Be mindful that only the first 25 items are shown, and so you may need to click on Show All button (at the bottom of the page) to see all the items (as shown in Figure 4). 5. You may require to click on a folder title to enter that folder in the Content Collection to find the file(s) you want. To return up one level in the Content Collection, use the Go to Parent Folder icon (as shown in Figure 5). 6. To select multiple items, click on the check boxes alongside the items then click Download Package (Figure 7). Figure 7 - Selecting multiple files in the Succeed Content Collection 7. Succeed compresses the files into one.zip file and a Save As dialogue box opens. 8. Select a folder into which to save the.zip file, edit its filename (optional) and click Save (Figure 8). 5 Importing files into Canvas 1. Log into Canvas and navigate to the relevant module. 2. Click the Files link in the Course Navigation menu (Figure 9). Figure 9 - The Files link in the Navigation Menu 3. Navigate to the folder in the Files structure where you wish to import the files you have downloaded from Succeed. This is done by clicking on the folder titles in the display. 4. Once in the correct folder, click the Upload button on the right (Figure 10). Figure 10 - The Upload button 5. An Open dialogue box appears. Navigate to the folder where the files were stored when downloaded from Succeed. 6. Select an individual file by clicking on it. Select multiple files by holding down the Ctrl key on the keyboard and clicking on them all in turn (Figure 11). Figure 11 - Making multiple file selections in the Open dialogue box 7. When all selections are made, click Open to upload the files to Canvas. Page 5 of 6

6 8. If a.zip file is selected, Canvas will prompt to ask if the contents of the.zip file are to be expanded upon upload or not. Click Expand it to unpack and display all the files in the.zip in the Files area after upload. Merely uploading the.zip file will place it in the Files area, but there is no in-built tool in this area to unzip the file s contents once uploaded, so Expand it is the recommended option.
