Avaya Installation Guide M2-1000SX/LX 1000BASE-SX/1000BASE-LX GIGABIT/FAST ETHERNET SWITCHING MODULES FOR THE AVAYA M770 Catalog No. 130033 Rev. A. July, 2001

Chapter 1 Overview Description This installation guide is divided into the following main sections: Overview: A general description of the Avaya s M2-1000, including interfaces, LED indicators and a front panel illustration. Installation: Step-by-step instructions for configuring the hardware, calculating domain usage, and installing the M2-1000 in an Avaya M770 Multifunction Switch. Software Configuration: Instructions for navigating the M2-1000 setup menus and step-by-step instructions for performing basic setup operations of the M2-1000 module. Troubleshooting: Suggested solutions for commonly encountered problems. Appendix: Port connector pin assignments. The M2-1000 is a 2-port full-duplex 1000BASE-SX/1000BASE-LX Gigabit and 6- port 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX Fast Ethernet DomainX module for insertion into the Avaya M770 hub. The following table describes SX, LX standards: Standard Wavelength Cable type Distance 1000BaseSX 850 nm 62.5 µm 220 m 1000BaseSX 850 nm 50 µm 550 m 1000BaseLX 1300 nm 10 µm 5 km 1000BaseLX 1300 nm 62.5 µm 500 m The Avaya M770 supports two Frame Switches, named DomainXs: DomainXL (Left DomainX) spans slots 1-7, and DomainXR (Right DomainX) spans slots 8-14. Each DomainX supports up to 6 Gbytes of bandwidth. You can insert the M2-1000 into either DomainX, provided you don t exceed the maximum of 100 Domain Resource Units (DRUs) per DomainX. Each module uses a certain number of DRUs; the M2-1000 uses 15 DRUs. The M2-1000 module s two Gigabit Ethernet ports can operate in two modes: Standard 802.1Q VLAN tagging mode (default mode). Global VLAN is automatically set on the ports when in this mode. Per port only mode (for use without VLAN tagging). You can select a separate VLAN for each Gigabit port. M2-1000SX/LX Installation Guide 1

Chapter 1 Overview Note: The VLAN tagging mode (802.1Q) or per port only must be the same on both local and remote ports. The M2-1000 gigabit ports operate with autonegotiation disabled and any connected equipment must have the same setting. The Gigabit ports are identical and can be used to provide redundant Gigabit backbone links, using the software port redundancy definitions. The Gigabit ports conform to the 802.3x Gigabit flow control standard and operates in full-duplex mode. Each of the module s 6 Fast Ethernet ports can work at 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX speed. Each of these ports can also be configured to function in either half or full duplex mode. You can specify for each port the 10/100M speed and half/full duplex mode, or choose to use auto-negotiation. Auto-negotiation automatically determines the individual port s optimal mode of operation - 10/100M speed and half/full duplex. Note: The default settings for the 1 Gigabit ports are: Autonegotiation: Disabled Flow Control: Full Duplex: In addition, Avaya s top-performing congestion management means that no packets are lost, reducing the need for bandwidth-wasting retransmission. The M2-1000 is manageable under CajunView, Avaya s family of SNMP network management systems, or any other SNMP-based management system. Note: The name M2-1000 is used throughout this manual and refers to both the M2-1000SX and the M2-1000LX. 2 M2-1000SX/LX Installation Guide

Chapter 2 Installation Installation Overview There are several stages involved in the installation of the M2-1000: Hardware Configuration: Setting operation parameters via DIP switches on the module s circuit board. Domain Usage Considerations: Computing whether your intended configuration fits the Avaya M770 domain resources. Installing the Module: Inserting the module in the Avaya M770 hub, and connecting cables to the module s ports for connection to other equipment: switch, hub or station. Caution: The M2-1000 contains components sensitive to electrostatic discharge. To prevent ESD damage, always hold the card by its sides only, and do not touch the circuit board components unless instructed to do so. Before handling the module or inserting it in the hub, touch the chassis of the hub to discharge any electrostatic charge on your body. Note: The recommended Avaya M770 configuration is two M-PS500 units, plus a third unit for redundancy. Such a configuration supports any number of DomainX and Avaya M400 Gate Switch modules in the hub. If there is only one M-PS500 unit available, the maximum number of modules in the hub is based on the following guidelines: 5 or less DomainX modules, or 4 DomainX modules with 2 or less Avaya M400 modules, or 3 DomainX modules with between 2 and 5 Avaya M400 modules. Chapter 2 Installation Domain Usage Considerations The M2-1000 is a DomainX module of the Avaya M770. The maximum number of DomainX modules you can insert in the hub is determined by domain usage considerations, as follows (M-SPV refers to either the M-SPV or the M-SPX in the following examples): The Avaya M770 allows a maximum of 100 Domain Resource Units (DRUs) for DomainXL (Left DomainX - slots 1-7) and the M-SPV, and 100 DRUs for DomainXR (Right DomainX - slots 8-14) and the M-SPV. Each of the DomainX modules, as well as the M-SPV module, has a DRU budget, as shown in the table below. When planning your hub configuration, calculate whether it fits the Avaya M770 DRU budget. Table 5 Avaya M770 Module DRU Budget Module Name DRU Budget M-SPV/M-SPX 10 DRUs M12-100T 18 DRUs M12-100F 18 DRUs M2-1000 15 DRUs M-MLS 6 DRUs M14-10F 6 DRUs Budget Calculation Examples 1. If you have six M14-10F modules, an M2-1000 module and the M-SPV you get: 6*6+15+10 = 61 DRUs. Assuming that you have the same configuration on the DomainXL and Domain XR switches you get a total of 168 Ethernet, 12 Fast Ethernet and 4 Gigabit ports. 2. If you have five M12-100 modules and the M-SPV you get: 5*18+10 = 100 DRUs. Assuming that there are five modules on both the DomainXL and Domain XR switches you get a total of 120 ports. 3. If you have six M2-1000 modules and the M-SPV you get: 6*15+10=100 DRUs. Assuming that there are six modules on both the DomainXL and Domain XR switches you get a total of 24 Gigabit Ethernet ports and 72 Fast Ethernet ports. 4. If you have four M12-100 modules, one M2-1000 and the M-SPV/M-SPX you get: 4*18+15+10=97 DRUs. This is less than 100 DRUs and is therefore another possible configuration. Note: A redundant M-SPV does not count in the DRU calculations. However you must include the active M-SPV twice, once for DomainXL and once for DomainXR. 8 M2-1000SX/LX Installation Guide

Chapter 2 Installation DRU Budget Information Window You can check the DRU budget information for your Avaya M770 hub via the CajunView Network Management System (NMS). The following window shows an example of a hub with an M-SPV, 2 M12-100T and an M12-100F module. Figure 2 DRU Budget Information Window M2-1000SX/LX Installation Guide 9

Chapter 2 Installation Installing the Module The M2-1000 occupies one slot in the Avaya M770 chassis and can be inserted into any available position. The M2-1000 can be installed or removed while power on. To install the M2-1000: 1. Hold the module (shaped like an upside down L) using both hands. The colored module name panel and LEDs should be on top (see Figure 3). 2. Fold out the plastic handles on the top and bottom of the front panel. 3. While holding the module by its handles, place it onto the top and bottom guide rails in the hub and gently slide it in. 4. Plug in the module by pressing firmly on the mid-section of the front panel. Fold down the handles and secure the module using the two screws at the top and bottom of the front panel. Do not over-tighten the screws. Note: Even though the modules are hot-swappable a short self initialization period is required when inserting or removing them from the hub. Allow at least 5 seconds initialization time between modules when inserting or removing several modules. 10 M2-1000SX/LX Installation Guide
