Derwent Innovation Blueprint for Success Keep Aware of Changes in Your Patent Field How do I stay on top of new patents? Are my competitors seeking protection for new technologies or markets? Are there new license opportunities for our existing technologies? The patent landscape evolves constantly. Thomson Innovation helps you stay up to date with updates about new patents in your field, alerts when competitors seek protection for new technologies or markets, and notifications when new patents cite your portfolio. Stay Up-to-Date with New Developments in Your Field Create a Search that Finds Relevant Technologies Review Results and Optionally Refine Your Search From the Dashboard, click Patents to create a search for patents in your technology field. Make sure you search all collections you can access, including DWPI Include Title/Abstract/Claims to search relevant text fields for specific keywords, including DWPI Title and DWPI Abstract, which provide concise Englishlanguage summaries that highlight the main use and advantages of the technology Include IPC codes and/or DWPI Manual Codes to focus on specific areas of the technology Review the results from your search to make sure you found results relevant to your technology field. DWPI Title provides a concise description that highlights the invention s content and novelty You may want to add common terms from the DWPI Title to your Abstract-DWPI search field Review Inventor and Assignee to make sure the search locates known players in the field Review the IPC-4 character chart on the Results Dashboard for additional IPC codes that you may want to add to your search You may also notice IPC codes that you want to specifically exclude from your results If you refined your search to include additional search terms or classification codes, rerun the search and examine the new results. When your search finds results you want, click Alert to be notified when the search finds new patents.

Clarivate Analytics Derwent Innovation Blueprint For Success - Keep Aware of Changes in Your Patent Field 2 Smart Search and Search History can help you find additional terms to refine and focus your text search. 1. Run a Smart Search with the keywords you entered in Title/Abstract/Claims for your search 2. Click the menu icon ( ) and select Search History 3. Select the Smart Search and your search, then click the Combine button Note: Make sure you select the Smart Search first 4. Change the operator from OR to NOT 5. Click Search Review the results as in the previous step, looking for key terms or classification codes you can use to refine your search to focus on the most relevant patents. After you find all the terms and codes you may want to add, use Search History to return to your original search and make any refinements. Create an Alert for Your Search Alerts are notifications that a search you created was run for you automatically and the results of that search are available for you to review. Click Alert beneath your results to create this notification for a search On the Run Options tab choose Monthly to create a report that shows all new patents in your area each month Choose Accumulate all results and New work file for each run to create separate work files for each month; you can always combine work files later for analysis On the Delivery & Content Options tab, choose Excel 2007 to receive a spreadsheet that you can use to perform deeper analysis; make sure you include fields you want to analyze After choosing your options, click Save to set the alert. You will receive monthly notifications of new patents found by the search.

Clarivate Analytics Derwent Innovation Blueprint For Success - Keep Aware of Changes in Your Patent Field 3 Review Your Results Each Month Your alert stores each month s results in a work file. The Results Dashboard for that work file provides a quick overview of the month s filings. Access your work files from the Saved Work tile on the Dashboard Review IPC-4 character to get an overview of the main technologies filed during the month Review Assignee and Inventor to track top filers and note specific talent Assignee can also help identify new players Review Country Code to track global filings You will also receive an email with an Excel file of the results that you can use for further analysis. Tip: Combine multiple work files to analyze quarterly or annual trends with the Results Dashboard, e.g., filing trends for specific assignees. You can also use charts and ThemeScape to perform deeper analysis on these combined work files. Monitor Competitor Activity in Your Field Create a Search for a Competitor in Your Technology Space From the Dashboard, click Patents to create a search for a competitor s patents in your space. Assignee Code-DWPI searches for a unique 4-letter identifying code that retrieves subsidiaries and related holdings of the specified company. Assignee-Current US searches for the entity to which the patent is currently assigned, based on US Reassignment data Assignee/Applicant includes the Corporate Tree browse tool, which helps you search for companies based on corporate hierarchy If your competitor invests in many technology spaces, limit your search to a particular field Tip: Review the Preview/edit query box and surround all search fields joined by OR with parentheses (e.g., all the Assignee fields in the example above). Otherwise, your search may not return the results you want.

Clarivate Analytics Derwent Innovation Blueprint For Success - Keep Aware of Changes in Your Patent Field 4 Review Results Dashboard to Ensure Correct Focus Create an Alert for Your Search The Results Dashboard provides a quick overview of your results to help you make sure your search focuses on the correct assignee and technology. Review Assignees for unwanted entities; remember that the visual shows all assignees listed on the patent, not just companies Review IPC-4 character to ensure correct technological focus; note that the chart includes all IPC codes from patents in the results, and some patents have broad coverage After you verify that your search targets the correct competitor and technologies, click Alert. Enter a Name for the search that includes the competitor and technology area On the Run Options tab, select to receive updates Upon collection update so that you get immediate notification of competitor activity Choose Accumulate all results and All results into a single work file to save all the competitor s patents for this technology together On the Delivery & Content Options tab, choose In Email Body to receive a summary you can quickly scan for potential threats; you can always export results from the work file in another format (e.g., Excel) Include Title-DWPI and (if available) Abstract-DWPI in your alert notifications to help you easily review patents and identify potential threats After choosing your options, click Save to set the alert. You will receive email notifications whenever patent authorities publish a new patent from the selected competitor in the technology space. Note: Alerts for searches that include non-dwpi collections and that run Upon collection update may notify you of new records before we can add editorially enhanced information in DWPI. This means that fields like Title-DWPI and Abstract-DWPI are best included in alerts that search Enhanced Data- DWPI and DPCI only. For searches that run Upon collection update and include non-dwpi collections (or for users without DWPI), include Title and Abstract instead of Title-DWPI and Abstract-DWPI in your alert notifications.

Clarivate Analytics Derwent Innovation Blueprint For Success - Keep Aware of Changes in Your Patent Field 5 Quickly Review Alert Emails for Potential Threats Every time we update a collection covered by your alert (including DWPI), your search will run automatically. If the search finds any new patents, you will receive an email that lists the patents found. Review DWPI Title to quickly understand the patent s content and novelty Review the patent s Abstract for a brief description of the invention If you have access to DWPI, review the Novelty and Advantage sections of the DWPI Abstract to quickly see what makes this invention unique Review the Claims of any patents whose title or abstract may indicate a threat Watch Patents of High Interest for Potential Changes Alerts contain links to patent record views in Thomson Innovation, where you can quickly watch patents of high interest for further changes: 1. Click the linked publication number in the alert 2. Click Watch Record link in the toolbar Note: You may be prompted to login Select changes you want to watch for on the record: Family Changes (INPADOC or DWPI) informs you when new family members are added, which indicates wider global coverage Publication Stages informs you when the patent enters a new phase, e.g., becomes granted Reassignment informs you if the patent changes ownership Review Your Alert s Results Dashboard for Compiled Intelligence Create Additional Alerts for Other Competitors The work file created when your alert runs compiles the records found by the search. The Results Dashboard for that work file provides key intelligence. Review Country Code to see if the competitor filed in new, unexpected territories Review IPC-4 character to discover potential new technologies or uses Use Search within your results to limit your view to specific time spans (e.g., the past quarter) Repeat these steps to create alerts for each competitor that you want to track. Individual alerts let you receive notifications specific to each competitor and simplify the query that powers the alert.
