1 QUICK REFERENCE CARD Your Gateway to Research ISI Web of Knowledge is the dynamic, fully integrated environment that gives you control of the discovery process by providing a single source for high-quality research content as well as the tools and technology to access, analyze and manage that content. ISI Web of Knowledge provides access to high-quality research information from leading publishers, including: Thomson Scientific CABI Publishing International Food Information Service Institution of Electrical Engineers American Psychological Association The products available within ISI Web of Knowledge span all disciplines in science, social sciences, and humanities. You can search one product at a time, or you can use CrossSearch SM to search several products at once. ISI Web of Knowledge also gives you tools for managing the information you retrieve, so you can customize it to suit the way you do research. ISI Web of Knowledge Products Your institution can subscribe to the following products through ISI Web of Knowledge: Web of Science Search journals and perform cited reference searches ISI Proceedings SM Search conference papers Derwent Innovations Index SM Search patents and perform cited patent searches Current Contents Connect Search journals and Web documents, and browse journals' tables of contents and evaluated Web sites Journal Citation Reports Find journal impact data to evaluate the world s scholarly journals Essential Science Indicators SM Research performance statistics and science trends data BIOSIS Previews Search the life sciences literature, including journals, meetings, papers, patents, books and reviews CAB Abstracts Search agricultural and applied life sciences literature, including journal articles, conference proceedings, patents, books, standards, and annual reports FSTA Food Science & Technology Abstracts Search an extensive collection of abstracts prepared from the world's food science, food technology, and food-related human nutrition literature INSPEC Search physics, electronics and computing literature, including journal articles, books, conference proceedings, scientific and technical papers PsycINFO Search behaviorial sciences and mental health literature, including journal articles, books, dissertations and reports In addition to these resources, certain external collections may be available via ISI Web of Knowledge when you use CrossSearch. External collections include Web sites, digital libraries, government publications, or resources developed and maintained by your institution.

2 ISI Web of Knowledge Homepage The ISI Web of Knowledge homepage is your starting point. From the homepage you can: Search multiple database products Select individual products to search Select an analytical tool to evaluate journals or to track performance statistics and trends in the sciences Make ISI Web of Knowledge work for you by registering. As a registered user, you can take advantage of these convenient features: Automatically sign in every time you access ISI Web of Knowledge Select a start page, which will appear the instant you sign in Save searches to the ISI Web of Knowledge server Set up search and citation alerts (available to Web of Science subscribers) Create custom journal lists for focused browsing and table-of-contents alerting

3 CrossSearch Use CrossSearch to search multiple products at the same time. The search fields you see on the form are determined by the products you select. If a field appears on the form, then it is searchable in every product you ve selected. To use multiple products in CrossSearch: 1. Click Change Products to Search if you want to select products different from the ones that are listed on the page. 2. Select a Timespan. Note that timespan refers to the dates when information was entered into ISI Web of Knowledge products and not to the publication dates of the source documents. 3. Enter search terms in the field boxes. Combine multiple terms using Boolean operators: SAME, NOT, AND, OR. Use wildcards to search for plurals and variant spellings. The asterisk (*) stands for any number of characters or no characters. The question mark (?) stands for one character. The dollar sign ($) stands for one character or no characters. If you enter terms in multiple fields, ISI Web of Knowledge automatically combines them using AND logic. 4. Click Search to run your query in all of the products listed at the bottom of the page. The results of CrossSearch will be items retrieved from all of the products searched, with links to the full records.

4 Analyze Tool* The Analyze tool extracts data values from a field you select and then produces a report showing the values in ranked order. This numerical, percentage and graphical analysis provides you with insight into hidden research trends and patterns. For example, suppose you search Web of Science for articles about deforestation in the Amazon region. You could use this feature to generate a list of institutions where research on this subject was done. The names of the institutions that appear in the largest number of records would be at the top of the list for easy viewing. *Available to Web of Science subscribers Marked Lists When you mark records retrieved by a search, the records are added to a marked list. Each product has its own marked list. To go to a marked list, select Marked Records from the drop-down list at the top of the ISI Web of Knowledge page, or click the Marked List button in the toolbar of a product page. To print, save, export, or marked records, or to order the full text of source articles, follow these steps: 1. Select the fields you want to include in your output. 2. Select the appropriate output option. Before you create the output, you may want to clear the check box next to records that you do not want to include and/or sort the list. Format for Print Display marked records in a format that is suitable for printing. Use your browser's print command to print the records. Save to File Save marked records in a form suitable for bibliographic management software or for another application such as a spreadsheet. continued on back

5 Export to Reference Software Export records directly to EndNote, ProCite, or Reference Manager. Order Full Text Order a print copy of the full text from Document Solution or from another source. Enter an address for the recipient. Optionally, enter a return address and a note to accompany the records. Then click the button to send the . Search Histories and Alerts A search history is a search query or a sequence of queries that you save to the ISI Web of Knowledge server or to a local drive. There is no limit to the number of search histories you can save. If your organization subscribes to the alerting service, you can also choose to save a history as an alert. An alert automatically searches the latest update and then sends the results to you by . There may be a limit to the number of alerts you can create. Contact your site administrator for more information. To save a history and set up an alert: 1. Click Save History in an individual product. You cannot save a search when you use CrossSearch. 2. If you have signed in, you have the option to save the history to the ISI Web of Knowledge server. If you have not signed in, then you can only save the history to a local drive (e.g., your computer's hard disk or a network drive). 3. Enter a History Name and an optional Description. 4. If you want to set up an alert, select Send Me Alerts and provide a valid address. 5. Click Save. Personal Citation Alerts* A citation alert notifies you by whenever an article on My Cited Articles List has been cited by a new article. To set up a citation alert, you must be a registered user, and you must sign in. To add a record to My Cited Articles List, click the Create Citation Alert button on the full record page. Each article on My Cited Articles List is linked to its full record. Also, the Times Cited number is linked to the list of citing articles. *Available to Web of Science subscribers

6 My Journals If your institution subscribes to Current Contents Connect, you can create a list of journals that you frequently consult. You can also set up table-of-contents alerts so that you can receive tables of contents via as soon as they become available. Check with your site administrator about the availability of alerting. To use this feature, you must be a registered user and you must sign in. To create or update your journal list, click Create My Journal List and Table of Contents Alerts on the homepage or select My Journal List from the drop-down list at the top of any page. Getting Help Click the Help button on any page to get detailed assistance with features, along with search tips and examples.
