1 Overview Introduction Benefits The HP ProLiant Hardware Inventory Tool for Configuration Manager 2007 uses the HP Insight Management Agents to obtain HP-specific hardware information from System Center Configuration Manager 2007 client servers and adds this information to the database of the site server. The inventory tool obtains the information and then displays it in the Configuration Manager Resource Explorer for the client server. To advertise the inventory tool to the client servers, you must follow the procedures described in this document. The inventory tool runs on each specified client, creating a series of intermediate.mif text files, which contains the information about specific client servers. The Configuration Manager Hardware Inventory Agent processes these files and sends them to the site server to update the appropriate database NOTE: Inventory information generated by the inventory tool is retrieved by the Configuration Manager agent during the Hardware Inventory cycle. This information is not available until the next hardware inventory scan is completed. The inventory tool is tested and supported through specific ProLiant Support Packs (PSP). For further information, see the latest HP Server Integrations with Microsoft System Center Products Support Matrix. The Resource Explorer view of certain hardware information retrieved by the inventory tool might contain incorrect values or missing information with newer HP ProLiant Support Packs. The HP ProLiant Hardware Inventory Tool for Configuration Manager 2007 is available from and supported by HP and provides the following functionality: Operates as a command line utility that extends the Configuration Manager database with detailed HP-specific information Complements the full line of HP management tools Related documents For more information on topics discussed in this guide, see the following resources: HP Insight Management Agents for Microsoft Windows user documentation from the HP Management CD System Center Configuration Manager 2007 Documentation Introduction 5

The installer updates Configuration Manger 2007 to add the following: HP Collections HP Software Distribution Package HP Software Distribution Package Program 6. Complete the steps in the Using the Software section to distribute the created package and advertise the created program. 7. In the Configuration Manager console, browse collected inventory data from the Resource Explorer. Preinstallation checklist Before installation, verify the following required configuration environments: The HP Insight Management Agents must be installed and properly configured in order for the HP ProLiant Hardware Inventory Tool to work. The inventory tool gathers its information from the HP Insight Management Agents and converts it to the MIF file format. The Configuration Manager Advanced Client Agent must be installed on managed servers. In addition, you must run a hardware inventory cycle on the managed servers that are to be inventoried. Dependency on PSP components NOTE: HP recommends configuring the ProLiant server fully with the PSP using the HP Software Update Manager. The HP Software Update Manager identifies and installs the necessary Smart Components in installation order. This information is based on the current PSP. Future releases might change the HP Software Update Manager's dependency. This section provides information about customizing the PSP installation and working with the HP ProLiant Hardware Inventory Tool. The following table describes the minimum set of HP Smart Components that enables the HP ProLiant Hardware Inventory Tool. Each Smart Component depends on HP device drivers. Ensure that all required device drivers are installed properly. The Relation to HP ProLiant Installation overview 7

Hardware Inventory Tool column describes functionality that provided the HP ProLiant Hardware Inventory Tool. Smart Component Name Functionality Relation to HP ProLiant Hardware Inventory Tool HP Insight Management Agents HP Version Control Agents HP Smart Array SAS/SATA Event Notification Service HP ProLiant Rack Infrastructure Interface Service (for p-class blades) HP Insight Management Agents are based on industry standard technology that enables the management of servers in enterprise, SMB, and Cloud Computing environments. SNMP is an industry standard communication protocol for managing and monitoring network devices. Its purpose is to provide a small, common, and simple set of commands that allow network devices to be managed. The SNMP agent supports the ProLiant 300 series and above. Mandatory to work with the SNMP Management Pack. The set of Agents are required to discover and manage ProLiant servers for the HP ProLiant Hardware Inventory Tool. Installing the HP ProLiant Hardware Inventory Tool for Configuration Manager 2007 1. Launch the HP ProLiant Hardware Inventory Tool installer on the HP Insight Control for Microsoft System Center CD Autorun installer. The installer must be launched on the system where the Configuration Manager 2007 has been configured. 2. The welcome dialog screen appears. Click Next. 3. The License Agreement dialog screen appears. Select I accept the terms in the license agreement, and then click Next. 4. The ready to Install the Program dialog screen appears. Click Install. The Installation Progress dialog screen appears during installation. 5. The Installation Completed dialog screen appears. To complete the installation, click Finish. Upgrading the HP ProLiant Hardware Inventory Tool for Configuration Manager 2007 from previous version The upgrade installation automatically updates changed components. The upgrade installation does not modify the already-created collection, package and program. You must manually update the package Distribution Point after the upgrade installation to ensure the updated binaries are available to the managed ProLiant servers. After installing the HP ProLiant Hardware Inventory Tool for Configuration Manager 2007 The installation updates the system with setup to the Configuration Manager 2007 server, files, and Start menu. If the console is opened during installation, then you must refresh the Configuration Manager Console. HP collections: Collections>HP Servers Collection to aggregate all HP servers. 3 Using the software Using the HP ProLiant Hardware Inventory Tool You can use the Inventory Tool to automate the inventory collection process. To use the tool, you must define a Configuration Manager advertisement from the site server to schedule inventory collection on specified clients. When the Configuration Manager has scheduled and executed the Inventory Tool, the Inventory Tool generates the.mif files on each node. The.MIF files are not automatically populated to the site server database. The Configuration Manager Hardware Inventory service must be configured and activated on each managed system to retrieve the.mif files and populate the database. NOTE: To ensure that the.mif files are collected, you must enable the NOIDMIF files option in the Hardware Inventory Client Agent Properties. For details on configuring and using the hardware inventory of Configuration Manager, see the Configuration Manager User Guide or Configuration Manager Application Help. The command line syntax is: HPHwInvTool /m If "/m" is not specified, IMF data displays on the current console. The inventory tool places the resulting.mif files in the appropriate client directory so the SCCM can update the database with HP specific inventory information..mif file contents The.MIF files are named HP0.MIF, HP1.MIF, HP2.MIF, HP7.MIF. Each file contains one or more inventory tables.
