iv IBM Spectrum Accelerate

Overview IBM Spectrum Accelerate is a software-defined storage (SDS) solution that allows enterprises to use their own server and disk infrastructure for assembling, setting up, and running one or more storage systems that incorporate the proven XIV storage technology. IBM Spectrum Accelerate is provided as a virtual appliance for VMware ESXi hypervisors. The Spectrum Accelerate virtual appliance software is installed on 3 15 physical ESXi hosts (servers), which together comprise a single storage system that operates with the XIV technology microcode. Each individual ESXi host acts as a storage system module, containing 6 to 12 physical disks that are utilized by the Spectrum Accelerate virtual appliance. The interconnected modules form a complete mesh and enable the unique data distribution and other advanced features and capabilities. IBM Spectrum Accelerate can be deployed either on-premises or off-premises. For more detailed information about IBM Spectrum Accelerate, refer to its user documentation and online information. What's new in version 11.5.0.d Version 11.5.0.d of IBM Spectrum Accelerate is a minor release that includes a hotfix. For more information, see Change log on page 7. Consult with an authorized IBM representative to obtain information about the required IBM Spectrum Accelerate licensing for your organization. v The license is associated with your IBM customer number (ICN). Contact IBM to obtain your ICN. Requirements This section specifies the hardware and configuration requirements of IBM Spectrum Accelerate version 11.5.0.d. Note: For comprehensive information about planning, preparation, and best practices, see the IBM Spectrum Accelerate Planning, Deployment, and Operation Guide publication. Required VMware ESXi host machines IBM Spectrum Accelerate requires 3 15 (minimum 3; maximum 15) VMware ESXi 5.5 host machines (physical servers) to be used as the individual modules of the storage system. Important: The following hardware components and configuration must be dedicated solely for the Spectrum Accelerate virtual machine and not for other virtual machines, applications, or background services on the ESXi host machines. Additional hardware resources are needed for the ESXi server functionality. Overview 3

Required hardware Each individual ESXi host machine must include the following hardware components: v x86-64 CPU with 4 physical cores (without Hyper-Threading) dedicated for the Spectrum Accelerate virtual machine. 2 additional cores must be allocated for the ESXi server functionality. v At least 24 GB and up to 48 GB of RAM dedicated for the Spectrum Accelerate virtual machine All ESXi host machines must have the same amount of physical RAM dedicated for the Spectrum Accelerate virtual machine. Additional and sufficient RAM must be allocated for the ESXi server functionality. v 6 to 12 physical hard disk drives (HDDs) dedicated for the Spectrum Accelerate virtual machine 1 TB or larger capacity (2, 3, or 4 TB) is required for each HDD. 6 TB disks are not supported. All HDDs must have the same capacity. All ESXi host machines must have the same number of HDDs (6 to 12). All HDDs must have up-to-date firmware. Check the HDD manufacturer website to obtain the most updated firmware. An additional disk is required for the VMware ESXi Server software. For better performance (not mandatory, but recommended) : - Any RAID function of the disk controller should be disabled (all HDDs should work in JBOD mode). - Any SAS controller should function without a cache. v One solid-state drive (SSD) of 400 GB or larger capacity for caching purposes (not mandatory, but recommended). v At least one 10-Gigabit Ethernet (10 GigE) port for the interconnect network; up to eight ports per ESXi host machine. v At least one Gigabit Ethernet (1 GigE) port (or of higher capacity) for the management and iscsi networks. v Uninterruptible power supply (UPS). Attention: Accidental power loss or improper system shutdown might result in data loss. In case of power loss, immediate manual shutdown of the storage system is required, followed by at least 30 seconds of continuous backup power to allow graceful shutdown of the storage system. 4 IBM Spectrum Accelerate

Required ESXi configuration Important: The ESXi platform must run on a 64-bit operating system. Each individual ESXi host machine should be pre-configured with: v No virtual machines (VMs) Only a single VM is created for the Spectrum Accelerate virtual appliance after the deployment is complete. v One datastore with at least 250 GB free space for storing the image of the Spectrum Accelerate virtual appliance. v Management IP address for the Spectrum Accelerate virtual machine. v One or two IP addresses for iscsi connectivity. v SSH access enabled (can be disabled after the deployment is completed). v SSH and ESX Shell services up and running. v Three separate IP subnets for the following Spectrum Accelerate networks: Management network iscsi network Interconnect network v NIC teaming configuration if more than one 10-Gigabit Ethernet port is used. Required vswitch, network, and deployment host The following table provides information about the required vswitches, interconnect network, and deployment host. Component vswitch Requirements One, two, or three vswitches (virtual switches) with corresponding port groups to which the management, interconnect, and iscsi networks can connect. As a best practice, the same port group names should be predefined on all ESXi hosts on which you intend to deploy the IBM Spectrum Accelerate virtual appliance. Interconnect network Must consist of a 10-Gigabit Ethernet LAN and must include: v One static IP address per module. All IP addresses must reside in the same subnet. v End-to-end MTU setting of 9000 bytes (Jumbo frame). Note: Use of a private VLAN for the interconnect network is recommended. Overview 5

Component Deployment host Requirements One deployment host from which the Spectrum Accelerate software is to be deployed on the ESXi hosts. Any of the following operating systems can be used on the deployment host: v 64-bit Ubuntu Linux 12.04 or 14.04 v 64-bit Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6.5 v 64-bit Microsoft Windows 7 The deployment host must have root access to the management IP address of the ESXi hosts. A Linux deployment host requires GNU Tar 1.15, which can be obtained from the GNU website (gnu.org/software/tar). User responsibilities Serviceability Known issues Because IBM Spectrum Accelerate can be deployed on any commodity hardware of choice, users must furnish its hardware, set up and establish its interconnect network, connect it to other networks as needed, deploy its software, and independently monitor its server configuration and hardware components. Users must also: v Maintain the ESXi server health, including the use of disk drives with up-to-date firmware. v Verify that other virtual machines do not run in parallel to the Spectrum Accelerate virtual machine on the same ESXi server, and that the ESXi server is not used for any other purpose (other than hosting Spectrum Accelerate). v Verify that the interconnect network is in good standing at all times. v Maintain the overall system operation environment, including the operating temperature and continuous power supply for its servers, based on the specifications of the hardware of choice. v Regularly perform any required maintenance for disks and servers that comprise the storage system. v Perform the software upgrade procedure when needed. IBM Spectrum Accelerate requires customers to monitor their storage system and regularly provide any required physical service to disks, servers, and networks that comprise the storage system. To allow IBM to provide proactive support for the Spectrum Accelerate storage systems, the Enable Proactive Support option must be enabled and properly configured in the management GUI per storage system. For more information, see the IBM Spectrum Accelerate Planning, Deployment, and Operation Guide publication. This section details the known issues in IBM Spectrum Accelerate, along with possible solutions or workarounds (if available). Important: v The issues listed below apply to version 11.5.0.d. As long as a newer version has not yet been released, a newer release notes edition for version 11.5.0.d might be issued to provide a more updated list of known issues and workarounds. v When a newer version is released for general availability, the release notes of version 11.5.0.d will no longer be updated. Accordingly, check the release notes of the newer version to learn whether any newly discovered issues affect version 11.5.0.d, or whether the newer version resolves any of the issues listed below. Overview 9

Ticket ID Severity Affected version(s) SYS-252743 Medium 11.5.0.b SYS-253004 Service 11.5.0.b SYS-262460 Service 11.5.0.b SYS-262628 Service 11.5.0.b SYS-264016 Service 11.5.0.b SYS-264238 Service 11.5.0.b SYS-264393 Service 11.5.0.b Description When entering several certificates to the certificate parameter, ipsec_connection_* CLI commands processes only the first certificate. Workaround: Issue the relevant ipsec_connection_* command for one certificate at a time. Resizing a pool (reducing its volume capacity) does not trigger the STORAGE_POOL_VOLUME_USAGE_INCREASED event when crossing the preset threshold. Workaround: No workaround is currently available. Accordingly, use caution when resizing down a storage pool. In some rare cases, the pki_set_pkcs12 CLI command might fail when trying to set a certification. Workaround: Issue the command again. Deleting a user certificate reverts the system to the generic certificate instead of to the unique system certificate. Workaround: Set the system-unique certificate as a default before removing the user certificate. Domain administrators from different domains that share a resource, can view and delete that resource's metadata. Workaround: No workaround is currently available. snmpwalk for volume statistics may take a long time when multiple volumes are defined. Workaround: No workaround is currently available. When associating separate LDAP groups to separate domains, an LDAP directory user cannot belong to more than one group if not mentioned specifically by the group name in the format of user@domain1/domain2. If a user is not defined in such a way and the memberof field contains more than one group, an LDAP_USER_CONFIG_ERROR event is issued. SYS-264934 Service 11.5.0.b SYS-265116 Low 11.5.0.b Workaround: No workaround is currently available. In IP filtering, FQDN host names are not supported by ip_access_group_remove_address. Workaround: Use an IP address instead. When using the multi-tenancy feature, the system does not block application administrators, who belong to user groups in the global domain, from being designated as IBM Hyper-Scale Manager users. Workaround: Remove any application administrator from the list of IBM Hyper-Scale Manager users. 10 IBM Spectrum Accelerate

Ticket ID Severity Affected version(s) SYS-265321 Service 11.5.0.b Description When working with IP filtering, a subnet cannot be added to an IP access group if an IPO, that is part of the subnet, already exists in the access group. Although the ip_access_group_add_address command is issued without an error, the subnet is not added. SYS-265489 Hyper 11.5.0.b SYS-265572 Service 11.5.0.b SYS-265642 Service 11.5.0.b SYS-265764 Moderate 11.5.0.b SYS-265833 Service 11.5.0.b SYS-265834 Service 11.5.0.b Workaround: No workaround is currently available. Spectrum Accelerate does not support using more than one target between two systems in a mirroring relation, as it might compromise the data on the destination. This operation, however, is not blocked by the system. It is blocked only when using the GUI in connected mode. Workaround: A warning message is issued when trying to define more than a single target. Keep in mind that there is no benefit in defining more than a single target between two systems, as one target is always enough. If any of the parameters of pool_change_config are invalid, the command might start running and then fail halfway through. Workaround: To avoid this problem, always run pool_change_config with valid parameter values. IP filtering does not work for an IP range. Workaround: Define an IP range by using an IP mask. When changing a volume to read only, the system does not raise a SCSI Unit Attention to make the host aware of the change. Workaround: No workaround is currently available. When using IP filtering, there is no validation that a valid IP address is entered to the IP Access Group. Workaround: No workaround is currently available. When adding IP addresses to an IP Access Group for IP filtering, two addresses cannot be added with the same IP, but with different netmasks. Workaround: No workaround is currently available. Overview 11

Ticket ID Severity Affected version(s) SYS-266218 Service 11.5.0.b Description When using the default setting for an RHEL syslog server, which does not implement Protocol-23 from RFC-5424 (http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc5424), most of the event data is not displayed. Workaround: Modify default RHEL rsyslog configuration (/etc/syslog.conf). Instead of the default: $ActionFileDefaultTemplate RSYSLOG_TraditionalFileFormat SYS-266220 Service 11.5.0.b Use: $ActionFileDefaultTemplate RSYSLOG_SyslogProtocol23Format The format=full parameter on the CLI help command is not supported. Workaround: Use -f all instead of format=full. SYS-266221 Service 11.5.0.b The ldap_user_list role=storageadmin CLI command does not list domain administrators. Workaround: No workaround is currently available. SYS-266311 Service 11.5.0.b Using audit_config_set with a port number that is greater than 65535 is not rejected. The default port number 514 is used. Workaround: To avoid this problem, always use a legal port number that is smaller than or equal to 65535. SYS-266476 Service 11.5.0.b SYS-266620 Moderate 11.5.0.b When using the muti-tenancy feature and LDAP authentication mode, a domain with which users are currently associated cannot be deleted. Workaround: To resolve this problem: 1. Turn off the LDAP authentication. 2. Dissociate the old users from the domain. 3. Delete the domain. 4. Turn on the LDAP authentication. The multi-tenancy feature does not support Sun directory or Open LDAP group objects. Static groups reflecting domain administrators fail to log in, and receive an unrecognized role completion code. Workaround: Instead of the an LDAP group object attribute, use the description string as hard-coded value per user. For more information, refer to the IBM XIV Storage System Architecture and Implementation Redbook. 12 IBM Spectrum Accelerate

Ticket ID Severity Affected version(s) SYS-266623 Service 11.5.0.b Description Attempting to connect to an LDAP server over SSL might fail and issue the LOGIN_FAILURE_LDAP_SERVER_UNREACHABLE error after a previous connection was made to LDAP without using SSL, or connecting to an LDAP server with a different certificate. Workaround: Always use a connection over SSL when establishing the connection for the first time. You can also try to establish the connection from a different management port. If both of these workarounds fail, contact IBM Support. SYS-266853 Service 11.5.0.b In the CLI help, the command descriptions for the domain_manage and domain_move_gp commands are incorrect. Workaround: Use the latest CLI reference guide. SYS-267911 Low 11.5.0.b IBM Hyper-Scale Manager supports LDAP UPN mode only when there are no domains configured on the system. If domains are configured on the system, LDAP UPN mode is not supported. Workaround: Try configuring the system using different LDAP login modes. SYS-269430 Service 11.5.0.b In some rare cases under extreme I/O rates, a single module might loose host connectivity. Workaround: No workaround is currently available. SYS-269449 Low 11.5.0.c When working in LDAP mode integrated with multi-tenancy, the ldap_user_list command returns Access Denied prompt when issued by global administrators. SYS-269479 Service 11.5.0.b SYS-269484 Low 11.5.0.b If defective hardware (disks, RAM, etc.) is encountered during the deployment, or if some required hardware components did not initialize properly and in time with the rest of the system, the system might not start and then switch to Maintenance state instead. Workaround: 1. Remove or replace the problematic hardware component. 2. Perform the deployment procedure again. During the deployment, FQDN host names in the format of hostname.domain.com are required. If short host names are used (hostname part only), the deployment fails. Workaround: Use a full FQDN name or IP address instead of a short host name. Overview 13

Ticket ID Severity Affected version(s) SYS-269605 Low 11.5.0.b Description In some cases, the Spectrum Accelerate system might issue the following error for some disks or disk controllers: DISK_ERROR_SENSE_INFORMATION Disk xx:disk:xx:xx had sense information indicating an error: xx/xx/xx (FRU=0000) ILLEGAL REQUEST - INVALID COMMAND OPERATION CODE. This error can be ignored. Workaround: No workaround is currently available. SYS-269650 Service 11.5.0.b In some cases, a replaced disk might be erroneously detected as a previously used disk, and marked as Failed. Workaround: This can be solved after occurrence by running the component_test CLI command or Test GUI function for the specific disk. SYS-269723 Low 11.5.0.b Incorrect Ethernet network speed is reported by both the GUI and CLI: 10 GbE is shown even if the actual speed is 1 GbE. Workaround: No workaround is currently available.
