Third party information provided to you courtesy of Dell THE CISCO CATALYST BLADE SWITCH 3030 FOR THE DELL POWEREDGE BLADE SERVER ENCLOSURE LEVERAGE THE POWER OF CISCO S INFRASTRUCTURE SERVICES TO IMPROVE SECURITY, RESILIENCY AND MANAGEABILITY. Data center managers focus on strategies that allow them to be secure and incorporate a high level of manageability and resiliency to ensure end customer satisfaction. All the while they need to maintain operational efficiency, reduce downtime and increase serviceability. Technologies advancements that aid in these goals are vital to their success. Can a new technology in the data center bring the secure, resilient and manageable services to the data center server-edge? Cisco says yes. The Cisco Catalyst Blade Switch 3030 is an integrated switch for Dell PowerEdge Blade Server customers that extends Cisco s Infrastructure Services to the server edge and leverages existing network investments to help reduce operational expenses. Designed for the Dell PowerEdge Blade Server Enclosure the Cisco Catalyst Blade Switch 3030 ensures consistency across the network for advanced services such as security and resiliency. It also allows customers to leverage the end-to-end Cisco management framework to simplify on-going operations. Figure 1 Cisco Catalyst Blade Switch 3030 INTRODUCING THE CATALYST BLADE SWITCH 3030 Cisco has designed the Catalyst Blade Switch 3030 to address the needs of Data centers and Enterprise customers while solving key challenges that these businesses face: Cable complexity in the racks and the interconnects Space challenges in high density data centers Manageability to the server edge Security throughout the infrastructure Operational efficiency and total cost of ownership All contents are Copyright 1992 2004 All rights reserved. The Catalyst Blade Switch 3030 was built for the Dell PowerEdge Blade Server Enclosure with Cisco s proven innovations that ensure the highest levels of reliability and availability, addressing the unique needs of data center customers. This solution eliminates cables in the server midplane. Blade server enclosures are denser than traditional server racks which means data center customers can fit more in less space, dramatically reducing space requirements. Cisco s embedded innovation, QoS and security in the Catalyst Blade Switch 3030 provides investment protection and enables businesses to roll out advanced services in a simpler and more cost-effective manner. Created to be highly resilient and secure, the Catalyst Blade Switch 3030 utilizes the same management features that have characterized Cisco products throughout data center and enterprise networks. CiscoWorks, the preferred management tool for enterprise switch platforms, is now available as the premier tool to manage all the way to the server edge. The added benefits of security, resiliency, manageability and end-to-end services deployment is an unmatched combination. Figure 2 CiscoWorks Lan Management Solution Cisco Extends Network Infrastructure Services to the Server Edge Innovation in the IT environment focuses primarily on delivering new business applications through traditional server-based systems. In that context, the network is the platform that transparently connects and enables all components of the IT infrastructure. Implementing Cisco Service-Oriented Network Architecture (SONA), data centers can optimize applications, processes, and resources to deliver greater business benefits. By making the network more capable and intelligent, enterprises can improve the efficiency of everything the network touches while freeing operation funds for new strategic investments and innovation. Standardization increases asset efficiency by lowering operational costs to support the same number of assets. Virtualization optimizes use of assets, such that extra physical resources can be logically segmented to be used across distributed departments. The widespread effect of the newly gained efficiencies across the network offers increased flexibility and scalability, thus creating a significant impact on growth, customer loyalty, and profitability thereby improving the overall ability to compete. What s in the Catalyst Blade Switch 3030 The Catalyst Blade Switch 3030 is a combination of Cisco hardware and software designed to integrate into Dell s PowerEdge Blade Server Enclosure and meet the needs of data centers and Enterprise customers. The Catalyst Blade Switch 3030 presents the advanced capabilities of Cisco IOS features in a tightly integrated switch without the cumbersome traditional cable connections between server and switch, eliminating completely the need for cabling between the switch and the server in a blade server enclosure. The end result is a smaller sub-set of cables between the blade switch and your network infrastructure. The Catalyst Blade Switch 3030 makes running a complete business data center more efficient than ever. The data center can grow in concert with your business, and Quality of Service (QoS) ensures that real-time applications are guaranteed to have the right quality and integrity. Page 2 of 5

The Catalyst Blade Switch 3030 delivers ease of connectivity, seamless functionality, and non-disruptive integration between the Dell PowerEdge Blade Server Enclosure. Securing business assets is an on-going challenge for many businesses. The Catalyst Blade Switch 3030 series integrates security to better protect access to servers. This integration includes IOS Security to avoid password theft, data theft, or snooping as well as integrating with the Cisco Network Access Control (NAC) solution to ensure Admission Control Posture Validation and the latest virus protection. These embedded features ensure that the switch, network and management are protected, providing peace of mind to network and data center managers. Integrated security is a competitive advantage as it reduces the risk of downtime and potential cost associated with an attack, theft of information, or liability. With Cisco Self-Defending Network, security is everywhere in the network. Cisco Data Center Access Solutions Cisco offers multiple options to address any and every data center networking requirement. The Catalyst Blade Switch 3030 complements the proven Catalyst 6500 and Catalyst 4948 platforms. All of these server access solutions are manageable with CiscoWorks Lan Management Solution.
