Intrductin t Oracle BI Enterprise Editin (OBIEE) Several years ag, Oracle tk a lk at the state f the Business Intelligence industry in terms f the different prcesses and applicatins that were required t create, use and maintain a Business Intelligence envirnment. Oracle fund a hdgepdge f multi-vendr, nn-integrated hardware and sftware that a crprate BI develpment team had t evaluate, test, find "Best f Breed", and then smehw try t make it all wrk tgether. Oracle s visin was t bring all f these disparate pieces frm multiple vendrs tgether int ne suite f prducts, called the Oracle Business Intelligence suite. The Oracle BI Server is the engine that takes infrmatin frm just abut any data surce, cnverts it int a clean, query-ready frmat, and then makes it available t a suite f tls such as dashbards, adhc analytics, BI Publisher, and even Excel. 1
Starting OBIEE n the Web: Presentatin Services Yu use a brwser t access the OBIEE server. There is n plug-in r ther sftware t install. Octber 2017 UPDATE: OBIEE 12c wrks fine in mre recent versins f hte 11g brwsers listed belw. Yu can see minr differences fund during testing at the bttm f the OBIEE 12c UPGRADE page here: https://cnfluence.crnell.edu/x/jylhf Supprted brwsers fr the currently installed OBIEE versin 11.1.1.6 are: Internet Explrer/IE7 r 8 Firefx 3.5 thrugh 9 (nt 10) Mst OBIEE features will wrk in Chrme, but it is nt a supprted platfrm. Macintsh users can use IE 7 natively, again, with n plug-in t install. A future OBIEE versin may be certified t wrk with Safari, but it currently will nt functin prperly. There is n need fr Virtual PC sftware, Crssver r Parallels. The OBIEE Answers interface will lk like this screensht when creating r editing an analysis: Legend: 1. The selectin panel (area #1) cntains the list f all tables and clumns that can be selected in an Answers analysis fr the selected subject area. 2. As clumns are selected, they will appear in the Criteria canvas in area #2. 3. Filter cnditins will be shwn in the Criteria canvas in area #3. The rws returned by an Answers analysis may be filtered based n ne r mre selectin criteria. 4. The tlbar (area #4) cntains links that allw yu t (in rder, frm left t right): a. Hme: Navigate t yur OBIEE Hme page. b. Catalg: Display the OBIEE catalg f stred bjects (analyses, filters ). c. Favrites: Display a list f yur persnal favrites (Analyses, Dashbards). d. Dashbards: Navigate t a dashbard. e. New: Create a new analysis. f. Open: Open an existing OBIEE bject (Analysis, Filter, etc ). g. The left save icn: Resave the current analysis with the existing name. h. The right save icn: Save the analysis with a new name. 3
Dimensins and Hierarchical Levels The DataMart r Subject Area that yu will query with OBIEE cntains tw types f tables: DIMENSION tables cntain descriptive attributes; FACT tables cntain Numbers r Dllars. Dimensinal HIERARCHIES are built by OBIEE Repsitry develpers in cnjunctin with the wners f the data, t allw users t DRILL dwn int Dimensinal data. The dimensins and their hierarchical levels t be used in this class are shwn belw. Here is an example f what these hierarchies enable yu t d: Instead f selecting ALL time dimensin clumns fr yur query r Answers Analysis, yu might simply select just the Fiscal Year clumn. When results are returned, yu will see links n the Fiscal Year clumn values that, when selected, will enable yu t drill dwn t Fiscal Quarter data then further dwn t Fiscal Mnth data, and finally t detail by Fiscal Week (There is n Daily level in the training database). At any pint, yu can click the brwser s BACK buttn t drill back up t the previus level, r all the way back t the highest Fiscal Year level.
