Installing WordPress CMS Extract the contents of the wordpress zip file to D:/public_html/wordpress folder as shown in diagram 1. D:/public_html/wordpress is a virtual domain controlled by Apache Web server on your local computer. NOTE: Details of how to Create Database and User for Wordpress has been given in Create the MySQL database and User for Wordpress tutorial on this website. NOTE: Details of how to Create Virtual host has been given in The Wordpress Virtual Domain tutorial on this website. Diagram 1 Open a Browser and type www.localwordpress.com in the address bar i.e. the domain name entry made in the HOSTS file and hit Enter key as shown in diagram 2. Diagram 2 On hitting the GO Key, index.php within the website s /public_html folder will be automatically invoked. When index.php executes, the WordPress installation process starts. This will automatically invoke index.php within the wordpress folder. When index.php executes, the WordPress installation process is started. WordPress 4 now gives you the opinion to select the default language to be used by your WordPress installation as shown in diagram 3. 1
Diagram 3 On click of Continue, WordPress will display a note saying for you will need to know Database Name, Username, and Password and grant the user privileges to the appropriate database as created in the previous chapter. When handling WordPress pre-install tasks all these details were noted down on paper. Hence, click on Let s Go! as shown in diagram 4. Diagram 4 2
Next the database connection details page is displayed as shown in diagram 5. Enter the details for the MySQL database and click on Submit as shown in diagram 05. NOTE: By default, the table prefix will be displayed as wp_. It is considered best practice to change the prefix to something else as a security measure. After changing the table prefix, do not forget to add an underscore just to keep some separation between the table prefix and the table name. In this tutorial for demonstration purpose we have changed the prefix to ibmb_. Diagram 5 WordPress will now check if the settings are correct. If all the details entered are correct a confirmation screen will be displayed as shown in diagram 6. Click on Run the install button to proceed as shown in diagram 6. Diagram 6 3
On the next screen enter information about the WordPress Admin username, the title of the new site and so on. In addition, a checkbox is displayed if the website is to be indexed by search engines or not. We recommend that this checkbox is clicked On. Once all information is filled, click Install WordPress as shown in diagram 7. NOTE: Do not use admin as the WordPress Admin username for security purpose. That said one can create a username which will be easy to remember. NOTE: Specify a working Email address. This will be helpful, if as website owner, you forget the password for the WordPress Admin Section and want to change the password. NOTE: For the purpose of this tutorial, we have turned off the feature Allow search engines to index this site. NOTE: Once all the website content is added and the website is ready for the general public, this feature will be turned on via the WordPress Admin Section. Diagram 7 4
WordPress is finally installed on your system. A 'Success!" message and an invitation to Log In is displayed as shown in diagram 8. Diagram 8 Testing The Freshly Installed WordPress CMS On Your Webhost Enter http:\\<url_of_your_website in full> in your Browser's address bar and hit the Enter Key. Your WordPress website will be displayed in your Browser s window as shown in diagram 9. Diagram 9 This completes the installation and testing of WordPress 4.X.X on your webhost. 5
