TEXTURES

TEXTURAL SURFACES Select a textural surface from the provided list: Marble Weathered Wood Rain Forest Glass Fur Armor Hair Brick Asphalt Spiders Web Formica Vinyl Plastic Cork Brass Rusted Steel Silk Window Screen Leather Tree Bark Velvet Water Mud Lava Tile Moss Plaster Shag Carpet Burlap Grass Fish Scales Lizard Skin Feathers Tires Sandpaper Pineapple Husk Flannel Upholstery Mucus Exposed Muscle Tissue Orange (fruit) Dirt Sand Cotton Ball Desert Jungle Forrest Seaweed Coral (sea life)

TEXTURAL ADJECTIVES Utilizing only five descriptive adjectives, describe your selected textural surface. Make sure they are powerful words, you only get five. Then give your list to your partner and see if they can correctly identify your textual surface, using only the adjectives on your list as clues.

TEXTURE THE TACTILE SURFACE CHARACTERISTCS (rough, jagged, soft, smooth), OR A VISUAL REPRESENTATION OF A TACTILE SURFACE. OF AN OBJECT.

SENSE MEMORY OF TACTILE SENSATIONS Smooth as Glass Soft as Velvet Fuzzy as a Bear

ASPECTS OF TEXTURE STRUCTURAL TEXTURE Is the result of the elements of a substance and the method of its construction. Fibers + Yarns + Weaving = Fabrics Pulp and Pressure = Paper Sand + Soda + Lime + Heat = Glass Wood Veneers and Glue = Plywood Varying these elements or adding additional elements, produces different textures. VISUAL TEXTURE The visual and mental response to the structural texture, or the impression. By varying the type of textures, the designer can produce different concepts, and emotional responses.

PHYSICAL EFFECTS OF TEXTURE Textures can either support or alter the physical perception of the effects of light, color, line, and form.

PHYSICAL EFFECTS OF TEXTURE Rough Textures = soften edges & create irregular outlines break up and diffuse light Enlarge shape Soften or dull effects of color Smooth, Hard Textures = Present form distinctly Reflect light in sharp highlights Emphasize color

PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF TEXTURE Textures express moods or associations that modify or support the psychological effects of color, line, and form. (How does the texture makes you feel about the environment/person) Texture can suggest: Occasion Season Economic Station Time Period

PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF TEXTURE Where is this? What do the textures tell you?

PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF TEXTURE Smooth, Crisp = Refined, hard, cheerful, perky, sophisticated Smooth, Soft = Sensuous, relaxed, luxurious Velvety Soft = Rich, luxurious Fuzzy = Cuddly, primitive, untamed Rough = Sporty, natural, uncouth, coarse, primitive, casual Coarse = Uncouth, earthy, uncivilized Medium (reg.) = neutralizing; businesslike, mature, stable, conservative Medium (irreg.) = stable, active, warm

PATTERN A special form of visual texture made up of other elements (line, color, shape).

PATTERNS DERIVE FROM FOUR SOURCES: NATURE = are pleasing and calming MADE OBJECTS = strong associations to time, place, gender & events IMAGINATION = geometric & free form SYMBOLS = based on a source that gives a motif a specific and widely accepted meaning.

ARRANGEMENT OF PATTERN All-Over Two-Way Border One-Way Four-Way Panel

PHYSICAL EFFECTS OF PATTERN 1. accents the area in which it is used 2. complements simple structural design 3. adds visual interest 4. attracts attention away from silhouette, (distracts eye from less pleasing contours) 5. larger patterns enlarge, smaller patterns not necessarily reduce

PHYSICAL EFFECTS OF PATTERN 6. sharply outlined motifs are more emphatic, dramatic and enlarging than fuzzy edged motifs

PHYSICAL EFFECTS OF PATTERN 7. patterns that create optical illusion quickly become distracting and visually tiring.

PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF PATTERN 1. closely spaced motifs may create a crowded, pressured feeling. Widely spaced motifs may create a spotty impression

PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF PATTERN 2. Flattened motifs (those without shading or dimension) = youth, simplicity, casualness, or humor.

PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF PATTERN 3. Plant, floral, and flowing motifs = feminine Animal and geometric motifs = masculine

PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF PATTERN 4. Large motifs = dynamic & bold Small motifs = dainty

TO REMEMBER ABOUT TEXTURE When planning textures or patterns for the stage, take into consideration the distance of audience to stage. More delicate and detailed textures tend to disappear over long distances. The effects of visual mixing may eliminate textures, but enhance color and 3-D effects.
