Firmware Please see our Audio User Guides for more information on specific features and operation. kcaudioadapter Edition The kcaudioadapter firmware streams high quality stereo audio to a headset. It is fully compatible as a Bluetooth ADP "Source" device, and also supports AVRCP profile. The kcaudioadapter will transmit the analog audio from the LIN and RIN input pins, or optionally, from the digital audio from the USB or PCM interfaces. The stereo signal is then compressed, segmented into Bluetooth packets, and transmitted wirelessly to the kcaudioheadset. kcaudiogateway Edition The kcaudiogateway firmware provides two way voice communications to a standard Bluetooth cell phone headset. It is fully compatible as a Bluetooth AGHFP device. The kcaudiogateway will transmit the analog mono audio from the LIN input pins, or optionally, as digital audio from the USB or PCM interfaces. The input signal is then compressed, segmented into Bluetooth packets, and transmitted wirelessly to a Bluetooth headset. Also, the microphone signal from the headset is received, and available through the LOUT output pins, or optionally as digital audio to USB or PCM. kcaudioheadset Edition The kcaudioheadset firmware will receive the wireless stereo signal, decompress, and convert to analog audio available on the LOUT and ROUT output pins. Optionally, the output can be directed to the USB or PCM interfaces. It is fully compatible as a Bluetooth ADP "Sink" device, and simultaneously as a Bluetooth HSP cell phone "Mono Headset" device supporting HFP profile. KCSI Stereo + Intercom Profile Additionally, we have a custom, patent pending, profile we call KCSI enabled by default. This profile is in addition to the standard Bluetooth profiles, and is included in both kcaudioadapter and kcaudioheadset firmware versions. Our patent pending KCSI profile is a real time Stereo + Intercom communication system. There are two major features in the KCSI profile that do not exist in standard Bluetooth ADP. Bluetooth v.0 does not have enough bandwidth for uncompressed stereo signals. The audio stream is compressed with either the Bluetooth default SBC (sub band coding) codec, or our low latency audio codec when using our KCSI profile. We designed KCSI for real time applications like gaming and television. KCSI is about three times faster than SBC, and the entire system provides audio with around 45ms wireless delay, which is under the perception time for lip sync problems. Second, we added a live intercom back channel. The kcaudioheadset when connected using the KCSI profile, will send the wireless microphone signal back to the kcaudioadapter. Thus, a mono audio signal connected to the kcaudioheadset LIN pin will be available on both LOUT and ROUT (dual mono) pins on the kcaudioadapter. KCSI Stereo + Intercom profile is selected by default when connected to another KCSI enabled device. 0 KC Wirefree Page of 5 Version September 04, 0

Interface Pins PIO Pins [ 9] PIO pins are LOW by default, and button presses used for device operation are HIGH signals. Pins are generally.v level logic (dependent upon VDD). PIO inputs are debounced to 0ms. Several PIO pins are assigned functions in default versions of firmware. Custom programmed functions are available. Inputs can be configured for weak pull up, weak pull down, strong pull up, strong pull down. Voltage input tolerance and output level is directly related to the VDD level. Specific functions are enabled on designated PIO pins depending on firmware version. Please refer to our Audio User Guide for complete information regarding specific features and PIO assignments. LED Pins [0 ] Two open drain LED output pins are available. The LED's need a positive.v (maximum) supply, and a current limiting resistor. UART Pins [ 5] The UART is compatible with the 6450 industry standard. Upcoming kcaudio firmware will implement an AT Command set for configuration and operation. Pins are generally.v level logic (dependent upon VDD). V_OUT Pin [6] The module has several onboard regulators. The onboard V regulator supplies the PIO, PCM, SPI, UART, and USB Pins. The class module has up to 00mA available from this pin. The class module also uses the onboard V regulator to supply the RF Power Amp, and has less than 0mA available from this pin. GND Pin [7] VSS ground plane. RESET Pin [8] The module will reset when pulled LOW >5ms. VDD Pin [9] Minimum VDD is.9v. Supplies several onboard regulators, and is also the designated Battery P terminal if powering directly from a Lithium Ion battery. The VDD pin may receive a recharge current supply when the voltage reading from this pin measures below 4.0V, the CHARGE Pin is connected to a power supply, and firmware has enabled battery monitoring and charging (default behavior). This VDD pin supplies the onboard Seiko S LDO V regulator. Note: the Seiko S has a 00mV dropout, so if VDD is <.5V, then the V supply rail will have a 0.V dropout. The V rail supplies PIO, PCM, SPI, UART, and USB Pins. ENABLE Pin [0] Enables internal voltage regulators. The ENABLE pin can be utilized in two different ways. Our current default firmware uses the ENABLE pin in Switch Power Mode, where it should be tied to the VDD pin, and used with an external power switch. In Switched Power Mode, our BTB functions are typically assigned to PIO 4. Please see specific firmware User 0 KC Wirefree Page 6 of 5 Version September 04, 0
Guides for details regarding PIO function assignments. Alternatively, firmware can utilize the ENABLE pin in Battery Power Mode, which uses a momentary ON/OFF button to power up. Once powered up, the internal voltage regulators will latch on, and then the ENABLE pin is used for BTB assigned functions. This is typically intended for a battery powered headset application with minimal buttons. Separate firmware must be used that assigns this behavior to the ENABLE pin. SPI Pins [ 4] We highly recommend including test points for the four SPI signals, used for firmware loading and diagnostics. The SPI interface is unavailable for general usage, and only interfaces with chip manufacturer diagnostic applications. Pins are generally.v level logic (dependent upon VDD). CHARGE Pin [5] Provide power supply for battery charging, when a battery is connected to VDD, and firmware enables battery monitoring and charging function (enabled by default). Do not connect without a Lithium Ion battery connected to VDD Pin. USB Pins [6 7] These interfaces are available with custom configuration. USB can be programmed for plug n play operation using standard USB Audio drivers available on PC, Mac, and Linux. PCM Pins [8 ] Pins are generally.v level logic (dependent upon VDD). MIC_BIAS Pin [] Provides a DC bias intended for electret microphones. Configurable.8V.V (default =.69V) with a current of 00uA.9mA (default = 0.67mA). MIC Pins [ 6] Microphone or line level analog audio input. Impedance is 6.0kΩ 0kΩ depending on volume setting. ADC operates at 8,.05, 6,.05,, and 44.kHz. Input signal should be 4mVrms 800mVrms. Input gain is adjustable from SPK Pins [7 40] Output gain is adjustable from 45dB to +.5dB. 0 KC Wirefree Page 7 of 5 Version September 04, 0

Hardware Design Modules provide UART, USB, SPI, and PIO hardware interfaces. This section illustrates a typical implementation, and does not consider all cases. Our engineers are available to review designs and answer any other design questions. Contact our engineering department directly by email: tech@kcwirefree.com Antenna Design The KC 6 has an onboard antenna that greatly simplifies deployment. Avoid all metal traces, components, enclosures, and ground planes close to the antenna area which will negatively affect RF performance. Other materials can also negatively affect RF performance. 8mm is a minimal clearance area from metallic components or traces. Application Notes Power supply to module should have less than 0mV rms noise between 0 0MHz, and spikes should be minimal. 0 KC Wirefree Page of 5 Version September 04, 0
