1 Introduction This kit contains the HP Disk File Optimizer (DFO) for OpenVMS Alpha and Integrity servers platforms. The installation procedure automatically selects the correct version. In addition, there are two variants of the product itself: Defrag Defrag PLUS The installation procedure allows you to choose to install Defrag or Defrag PLUS software. Defrag PLUS contains a scheduling process that allows for periodic scheduling of defragmentation jobs. If you do not wish to use the Defrag PLUS, install the Defrag variant. Defrag provides a more direct interface to the defragmentation process. Customers are advised to take backup of the existing database before deinstalling the earlier versions of DFO. Note DFO Version 3.1 supports OpenVMS on AlphaServers and Integrity server systems only. DFO Version 3.0 is the last supported version on the VAX systems. While referring to the HP Disk File Optimizer for OpenVMS V2.9 Guide to Operations and HP Disk File Optimizer for OpenVMS V2.9 Installation Guide, keep in mind that DFO Version 3.1 is not available on the VAX platform. 2 Software Version Requirements DFO Version 3.1 software runs on OpenVMS Alpha Versions 7.3-2, 8.3, & 8.4 and OpenVMS Integrity servers Versions 8.3, 8.3-1H1, & 8.4. 3 Installing the Software The following steps should help you begin the installation procedure for installing HP Disk File Optimizer for OpenVMS Version 3.1 on your system. The rest of the installation procedure is concerned with the specific DFO variant you wish to use - DEFRAG or DEFRAG-PLUS. For specific information regarding the installation steps that follow please read the Disk File Optimizer for OpenVMS Installation Guide. 4 New Features/Enhancements in DFO Version 3.1 This section documents either new feature or enhancement or both, provided in DFO Version 3.1. DFO supports file systems up to 2 TB size DFO is enhanced to defragment large capacity disk of up to 2 TB in size which was earlier limited to 1 TB. Disks or devices whose size is greater than 1 TB and less than 2 TB are supported only on OpenVMS Version 8.4 on both Integrity servers and Alpha architectures. To support defragment disks of size up to 2 TB, the following is changed: The design is changed to use unsigned integer datatypes for holding the LBN, VBN, and size related variables. Also, the code logic to compare these unsigned variables is modified. With this new design, DFO can defragment disk capacities greater than 1 TB which was not possible in the earlier versions. 5 Problems Fixed in DFO Version 3.1 The following problem is fixed in this release of DFO: While installing DFO version T3.1 on an Integrity server with Performance Solution Data Collector(PSDC), it displays the following error message: %DCL-W-UNDSYM, undefined symbol - check validity and spelling \PSDC_VERSION\ %DCL-W-UNDSYM, undefined symbol - check validity and spelling %VMSINSTAL-E-INSFAIL, The installation of DFGT V3.1 has failed This problem is fixed in this release. 6 Known Problems and Restrictions This section describes known problems and restrictions for Version 3.1 Known problem Under some conditions, defragmenting a file of size more than 500 GB on a volume of size greater than 1 TB, the following bugcheck might occur: PTRCNT, ACP block count exceeds retrieval pointer size 3

4 This has been root caused to a File System issue. A File System patch is under development and is expected in Q2 of calendar year 2012. Please contact HP support representative for the availability of an OpenVMS File System patch containing the fix for this problem.
