1 Introduction This Protocol Analyzer is an easy to use tool with advanced capabilities that enables utilities, manufacturers, system integrators and conformance test laboratories to automatically test IEC 61850 enabled devices. The SimFlex Protocol Analyzer is a member of the SimFlex tool set. The Protocol Analyzer enables users to inspect in detail what is communicated between devices on the network. The analyzer is easy to use and its intuitive user interface enables you to quickly inspect network traffic. This makes the SimFlex Protocol Analyzer an excellent software solution for the electrical power industry. All information in this manual is strictly confidential. 2 Purpose of this guide This guide's main goal is to help users to get the SimFlex Protocol Analyzer up and running for the first time. Some of the users will be familiar with the installation of one or more SimFlex tools. If you are not familiar with those tools we suggest to follow the instructions in this manual carefully. This document contains two main parts: 1) SimFlex Protocol Analyzer Installation 2) Running the SimFlex Protocol Analyzer for the first time After following the instructions you should be able to capture some network data from a real IEC 61850 server device. 2.1 Trial version limitations In case you have received or downloaded a trial version of the software, there might be restrictions. Some of the functionality has been turned off, removed or will give you only limited access. The trial version is valid for 30 days from the date that you install the software on a computer. 3 Requirements 3.1 System requirements The SimFlex Protocol Analyzer has the following software and hardware requirements: - Runs on XP SP3 and Windows 7 SP1 - Windows.NET Framework 4.0 or higher - 1GB of RAM or more - 1 GHz processor or faster - 250 MB of free hard disk space - At least one 100 Mbit or faster Network Interface Card - 1 free USB port Install the SimFlex Protocol Analyzer software with administrator rights. For proper functionality the SimFlex Protocol Analyzer must be executed with administrator rights when run for the first time. The license for the SimFlex Protocol Analyzer is not supported on virtual machines. 3.2.NET Framework Before installing SimFlex Protocol Analyzer version please make sure that you have installed the.net Framework version 4.0 or higher, the Full profile on your computer. Without installing.net Full Profile the SimFlex installation will not run properly. The latest version of the.net Full Profile installation file can be downloaded from the MicroSoft web site. 4 SimFlex Protocol Analyzer Installation This section shows you how to install SimFlex Protocol Analyzer step by step. For this you need to be logged on with an administrator account. Start the setup program (e.g. SetupPA<version number>.exe) to start the installation. Please select your preferred language and click OK Figure 1: Select language of the main setup program. Figure 9: Installation of WinPcap Installation options. WinPcap will be started the moment it will be used by the SimFlex Protocol Analyzer, so it s not needed to let it start at boot time. 5 Running the SimFlex Protocol Analyzer for the first time Running your first test involves several steps. Some of these steps are needed only once, the information from it is stored in the configurations database. Steps involved: 1. Start your copy of the SimFlex Protocol Analyzer. 2. Possible error messages. 3. Configure the network interface (once only). 4. Start the analyzer to capture network data. 5.1 Start your copy of the SimFlex Protocol Analyzer Locate the SimFlex Protocol Analyzer icon on your desk top or in your Start menu. Figure 19: Simflex Protocol Analyzer links Right-click on it and select Run as administrator In Windows 7, this is needed, even if the user has administration rights. If Windows is configured as default, a User Account Control might appear. Figure 20: Run as administrator Click Yes to allow SimFlex Protocol Analyzer to write in the registry on the first run. Close it and now you can restart without administration rights. 5.2 Possible error messages The following screen might appear when you start to run the Protocol Analyzer (numbers and error codes can deviate from the example): Possible causes: Figure 22: No license error starting SimFlex Protocol Analyzer There is no CodeMeter license dongle in one of the USB ports. The license dongle does not contain a valid license for the SimFlex Protocol Analyzer. The license has expired. Possible solution(s): Plug in the dongle and click Retry. Contact GridClone. Figure 23: 1st time starting SimFlex Protocol Analyzer without administrator rights Cause: Protocol Analyzer needs to write in the local machine registry once for each machine. Solution: log in as a user that has administration rights and run Simflex Protocol Analyzer as administrator. 5.3 Configure the network interface The next thing to do is to configure your copy of the SimFlex Protocol Analyzer to use the correct network interface. From the pull down menu, select Edit / Settings to open the settings form. If you run Start Capture without having initialized the settings, this form will open as well. Figure 24: General Settings In the Capture tab you can specify settings for capturing packets (capture filter) and stop conditions for a capture. For the initial run of the Protocol Analyzer these settings can be left unchanged. Date: November 15, 2013 pag. 17
Figure 25: Capture Settings Select the network interface that you want to use for communication with the DUT (Device Under Test). If multiple IP numbers are configured for the network interface, use the [ IP Address 1] dropdown list to select the correct one. If you are running a SimFlex Protocol Analyzer Trial version then Client 2 is not used and you can leave the selected option unchanged. Press the [ Done ] button when ready. 5.4 Start to capture network data After starting the SimFlex Protocol Analyzer then main screen will appear. To start a capture on the selected capture interface just press the Start Capture button on the tool bar. To stop the capture, press the Stop Capture button on the tool bar.
