Mdule: Items in DSpace Mdule verview: Items are ne f the cre cncepts in DSpace. An item a representatin f the files and metadata bught tgether t make an atmic unit. This mdule intrduces items and the cnstituent parts f metadata, bundles and bitstreams. The mdule cncludes with a descriptin f the standard submissin interface and a practical exercise t submit an item. This mdule intrduces items, but des nt cver aspects such as what metadata is, r why it is needed. This is cvered in the mdule An intrductin t metadata in DSpace. Mdule bjectives: By the end f this mdule yu will: 1. Understand what an item in DSpace is, and what it is made up f 2. Knw abut bundles and bitstreams 3. Knw hw the standard submissin interface wrks 4. Have submitted an item int a DSpace repsitry Nte Fr the practical exercise, please refer t yur sheet Lcal instructins fr details f the fllwing: Hw t launch a web brwser What the URL f yur DSpace installatin is Where test files are lcated Page 1 f 7
What is an item? What makes up an item An item is made up f three parts: 1. Metadata 2. Bundles a. Metadata is required t describe the item. Withut metadata n ne wuld understand what the item was. a. Bundles are cllectins f files. Typical bundles include the ORIGINAL bundle which cntains the raw files depsited int the repsitry, the LICENCE bundle which cntains a cpy f the licence that was agreed t during submissin, and TEXT which includes the extracted text (fr indexing purpses) fr each file in the ORIGINAL bundle. Page 2 f 7
3. Bitstreams a. Each file upladed int DSpace, r created by DSpace is cnsidered a bitstream. A bitstream refers t the fact that a file is simply a stream f bits (0s and 1s) held n a strage medium such a disk. Page 3 f 7
The standard submissin interface A typical submissin A typical submissin invlves the fllwing steps: Chse a cllectin t submit t This can be dne by either using the Submit t this cllectin buttn within a cllectin, r by selecting the Start a New Submissin buttn n the My DSpace page, and chsing the relevant cllectin frm the drp dwn bx that appears. Answer sme initial questins The initial questins are required in rder fr DSpace t custmize the submissin prcess. The questins are: The item has mre than ne title, e.g. a translated title (DSpace will prvide a bx fr an alternative title t be prvided) Page 4 f 7
The item has been published r publicly distributed befre (DSpace will ask fr a bibligraphic citatin, a publisher, and a date f publicatin) The item cnsists f mre than ne file (DSpace will allw the user t uplad mre than ne file) Enter sme metadata There are fields fr the metadata. Typical fields include title, authr, abstract, citatin and date f publicatin. The metadata required is cnfigurable. See the mdule An intrductin t metadata input custmizatin fr details. Uplad sme files Yu can uplad ne r mre files. Files are upladed by selecting them in the brwser. Verify the submissin DSpace will present all the metadata yu have entered back t yu, alng with the files. This allws yu t cnfirm that the data is crrect. If it is nt, it gives yu the pprtunity t crrect the data. Agree t the depsit licence The final stage f the depsit requires yu t agree t a depsit licence. A cpy f the licence is depsited alng with the item. The licence is cnfigurable (see the mdule RSS feeds, email alerts, news and licences ). Page 5 f 7
Practical exercise: submit an item Submit an item Using a cllectin that yu have already created, perfrm a submissin using a test item prvided t yu. The lcatin f test items is prvided in yur lcal infrmatin sheet. Page 6 f 7
