MHS BYOD Plicy MUDGEE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT BRING YOUR OWN DEVICE (BYOD) POLICY Intrductin This dcument prvides advice and directin t students wh chse t use BYOD t access the Department f Educatin (DOE) wireless netwrk. Key Principles The term "device" in this plicy refers t any persnal mbile electrnic device with the capability t cnnect t the department's Wi-Fi netwrk. Mudgee High Schl allws students t bring their wn devices t schl and prvide access t the DOE's Wi-Fi netwrk. The DOE will prvide internet access thrugh its wireless netwrks at n cst t students enrlled in NSW Public Schls at DOE sites. Students are respnsible fr the care and maintenance f their devices including data prtectin and battery charging. The department will nt accept any liability fr the theft, damage r lss f any student's device. Students wh bring their wn devices nt schl sites d s at their wn risk. Schls are nt bliged t prvide hardware r technical supprt fr devices. Students and their parents/carers must cmplete and return a signed BYOD Agreement prir t cnnecting t the department's netwrk. Where the schl has reasnable grunds t suspect that a device cntains data which breaches the BYOD Agreement, they may cnfiscate the device fr the purpse f cnfirming the existence f the material. Depending n the nature f the material invlved, further actin may be taken including referral t the plice. Schl disciplinary actin may als be apprpriate. Student BYOD Agreement Prir t cnnecting their devices t the netwrk, students must return a Student BYOD Agreement. This agreement must be signed by the student and by a parent/carer. If a student is living independently f their parents r is 18 years f age r mre, there is n requirement t btain the signature f a parent. It is imprtant t ensure that students are aware f and agree t their bligatins under the Student Bring Yur Own Device (BYOD) Plicy and relevant plicies, prir t using their wn device n the DOE Wi-Fi netwrk. Schl staff shuld endeavur t ensure that the BYOD student respnsibilities are clearly understd by bth students and their parents r carers. The Student BYOD Agreement is a simple dcument with the purpse f acknwledging acceptance and agreement f the terms assciated with the schl's implementatin f the Student Bring Yur Own Device (BYOD) Plicy by bth students and parents/carers. It is accmpanied by an Infrmatin Sheet prvided in cnjunctin with the Student BYOD Agreement. By accepting the terms, the student and parents/carers acknwledge that they: Agree t cmply with the cnditins f the Student BYOD Plicy.

Understand that nncmpliance may result in the student being subject t schl disciplinary actin. Cst t Students Internet access thrugh the Department's netwrk will be prvided at n cst t students enrlled in NSW Public Schls at DOE sites. Student Respnsibilities Students are slely respnsible fr the care and maintenance f their BYO devices. This includes but is nt limited t: Managing battery life and regular charging f their device. Labelling their device fr identificatin purpses. Purchasing and using device prtective casing. Ensuring the device is safe and secure during travel t and frm schl and thrughut the schl day. Maintaining up-t-date anti-virus sftware and perating system n their device. Taking insurance cverage f their wn device t prtect any accidental damage, theft r lss. 1. Students are respnsible fr managing the battery life f their device and acknwledge that the schl is nt respnsible fr charging their devices. Students shuld ensure that their devices are fully charged befre bringing them t schl. Schls are nt respnsible fr (r restricted frm) prviding facilities fr students t charge their devices. 2. Students must have a supprted perating system and current antivirus sftware installed n their device and must cntinue t maintain the latest service packs, updates and antivirus definitins. 3. Students shuld nt attach any schl-wned equipment t their mbile devices withut the permissin f the schl principal r their delegate. 4. Students shuld clearly label their BYOD device fr identificatin purpses. Labels shuld nt be easily remvable. 5. Students are respnsible fr securing and prtecting their device in schls. This includes prtective/carry cases and exercising cmmn sense when string the device. Schls are nt required t prvide designated r secure strage lcatins. 6. Students are respnsible fr ensuring the perating system and all sftware n their device is legally and apprpriately licensed. Damage and lss Students bring their devices nt the schl site at their wn risk. Technical Supprt NSW DOE staff are under n bligatin t prvide any technical supprt n either hardware r sftware. Lng-term care and supprt f BYODs Students are slely respnsible fr repair and maintenance f their wn device. It is nt the schl's respnsibility. Warranties: Students shuld understand the limitatins f the manufacturer's warranty n their BYO devices, bth in duratin and in cverage. Under Australian cnsumer legislatin, warranties usually last fr ne year, during which any manufacturing defects will be repaired r the device will be replaced (as per the specific terms and cnditins f the manufacturer). Extended Warranties: At the time f purchase, students may als purchase an ptinal extended warranty (past the standard warranty perid) frm the supplier/manufacturer f their device, during which any manufacturing defects that may ccur will als be repaired. Insurance Student BYO devices are nt cvered by Treasury Managed Fund. When students purchase their BYO device, they may als purchase an ptinal insurance plicy frm the supplier f their device r a relevant insurance cmpany. As mbile devices are subject t a higher risk f accidental damage, prir t signing up fr an insurance plicy, students shuld be fully aware f the details and limitatins f the plicy, including any excess charged fr making a claim, and the name f the cmpany that hlds the plicy. As a guide, a suitable BYOD device insurance plicy shuld cver all types f BYOD devices and prvide wrldwide, replacement cst cverage against: Accidental damage Damage frm falls and liquids Theft Fire Vandalism Natural disasters (such as flds, cyclnes, earthquakes, trnads, water damage, and pwer surge due t lightning Acceptable use f BYO devices Using the DOE netwrk services t seek ut, access, stre r send any material f an ffensive, bscene, prngraphic, threatening, abusive r defamatry nature is prhibited. Such use may result in legal and/r disciplinary actin. Students shall nt create, transmit, retransmit r participate in the circulatin f cntent n their devices that attempts t undermine, hack r bypass any hardware and sftware security

mechanisms that have been implemented by the Department, its Infrmatin Technlgy Directrate r the schl. Students must nt cpy, transmit r retransmit any material that is prtected by cpyright, withut prir permissin frm the cpyright wner. Mbile phne vice and text, SMS messaging r device instant messaging use by students during the schl hurs is a schl based decisin. Students must nt take phts r make vide r audi recrdings f any individual r grup withut the express written permissin f each individual (including parent/carer cnsent fr minrs) being recrded and the permissin f an apprpriate staff member. Students shall cmply with departmental r schl plicies cncerning the use f BYODs at schl and while cnnected t the Department's netwrk including: Online Cmmunicatin Services Acceptable Usage fr Schl Students The principal retains the right t determine what is, and is nt, apprpriate use f BYODs at the schl within the bunds f NSW privacy and ther legislatin. The cnsequences f any breaches f this plicy will be determined by the Principal, in accrdance with the schl's welfare and discipline plicies. As the student device is intended as a persnal learning tl schls are encuraged t cnsider a variety f alternatives t ensure equitable access t cntinued learning pprtunities. DOE Technlgy Standards Prir t purchasing r using an already purchased device, parents and students shuld be made aware f the fllwing technlgy standards required fr devices used within schls: The DOE wireless netwrk installed in high schls nly perates n the 802.11n 5Ghz standard. Devices with 802.11a/b/g r 802.11n 2.4Ghz nly may nt be able t cnnect. The battery life f the device shuld be capable f lasting 6 hurs minimum f cnstant use withut charge Device hardware specificatins must meet the minimum (ideally the recmmended) specificatins f the perating system and all applicatins Currently supprted Operating System Other cnsideratins when purchasing a device include: Extended warranty Device insurance Prtective casing (scratch/impact/liquid-splash resistant) Additinal r spare battery packs Ergnmics (is this device cmfrtable t use fr an entire schl day) Backup strage such as prtable hard drive r USB flash drive Security and device management prcesses

Students using BYOD at Mudgee High Schl shuld cnsider the fllwing aspects f safe cmputer use. The act f accessing the MHS cmputer netwrk implies that the user is aware f and agrees t abide by the cde f behaviur statements cntained in the DOE cmmunicatins plicy and the MHS BYOD Student Agreement. * This BYOD Plicy is subject t review and updating in accrdance with changes t the schl s technlgy requirements.
