Introduction This document provides examples for using converged topology to manage a WLAN. A converged topology displays the physical topology of a WLAN. You can add devices to the topology as needed to monitor and manage them from the topology. Prerequisites Before you use the converged topology module to monitor a WLAN, complete the following tasks: Create a WLAN to be managed. Make sure the routes are reachable. Add wireless devices to WSM. Example: Using converged topology to manage a WLAN Network requirements Use converged topology to manage the WLAN, as shown in Figure 1. Figure 1 Network diagram 1

Software version used This configuration example was created and verified on the following software versions: IMC PLAT 7.2 (E0403P03). IMC WSM 7.2 (E0502P04). Configuring a converged topology view Adding a converged topology view 1. Log in to IMC. 2. Click the Resource tab. 3. From the navigation tree, select WLAN Manager > View Management > Network Topology. Or click the Service tab, and then select WLAN Manager > Wireless Topology from the navigation tree. The network topology page appears. 4. From the topology navigation tree, select Topology > Converged Topology. The converged topology displays all converged views. 5. Right-click the blank area, and then select Add View from the shortcut menu. The Add View dialog box appears. 6. Enter Wireless Laboratory in the View Name field, as shown in Figure 2. Figure 2 Adding a view 7. Click OK. 8. Double-click the view icon to open the converged topology. Adding wired devices to the view 1. Click the Add Device to This View icon on the toolbar. Or right-click the blank area, and then select Add Device to This View from the shortcut menu. 2

The Select Devices window appears. 2. Add target switches in the WLAN to the view, as shown in Figure 3. Figure 3 Adding wired devices 3. Click OK. Adding wireless devices to the view 1. Click the Add Wireless Device to This View icon on the toolbar. The Wireless Device List appears. 2. Click the AC List tab, Fat AP List tab, and Fit AP List tab to select wireless devices and then add them to the view, as shown in Figure 4. 3

Figure 4 Adding wireless devices 3. Click OK on each tab. The converged topology view displays the WLAN topology, as shown in Figure 5. Figure 5 WLAN topology Configuring parameters for the converged topology 1. Click the Advanced Settings icon on the toolbar. The Advanced Settings dialog box appears. 2. On the Global Settings tab, configure the following parameters, as shown in Figure 6: a. Select Display hidden nodes. 4

b. Set Opacity to 0.5. c. Select 3D Icon from the Icon Type list. d. Use the default values for other parameters. Figure 6 Configuring parameters on the Global Settings tab 3. On the Color Settings tab, use the default values for the parameters, as shown in Figure 7: You can set these parameters as needed. Figure 7 Configuring parameters on the Color Settings tab 4. Click OK. 5

Managing the wireless network Viewing the wireless network topology 1. Click the Resource tab. 2. From the navigation tree, select WLAN Manager > View Management > Network Topology. The network topology page appears. 3. From the topology navigation tree, select Topology > Converged Topology > Wireless Laboratory. The converged topology displays the connections between wired and wireless devices, as shown in Figure 8. Figure 8 Viewing the topology Managing wired devices 1. Click a switch icon to view basic switch information. You can click the links in the tips window to view more switch information such as device details, device alarms, and performance trend, as shown in Figure 9. 6

Figure 9 Viewing device information 2. Click the Link Management icon on the toolbar to manage network links on the Link Management page, as shown in Figure 10. Figure 10 Link management Managing wireless devices 1. Click an AC or fit AP icon to view basic AC information shown in Figure 11 or fit AP information shown in Figure 12. 7
