P age 2 of 14 Topic 1: Overview of the Penfold Commons The Penfold Commons is equipped with a ceiling-mounted LCD projector, motorized projection screen, DVD player, AM/FM radio, auxiliary audio input (for ipod, etc.), six microphone inputs, and an A/V wall plate that provides connectivity for a laptop or other external A/V device. The Media Cabinet, microphones, cables, remote controls, etc. are housed in the Media Closet. What s In the Media Closet? Media Cabinet CREST Audio CKS400 Power Amplifier SHURE SCM800 Mixer (see image below) Terk A/V Switcher SONY DVD Player TOA AM/FM Radio Tuner Rack Drawer (contain microphones, microphone clips, projector remote, DVD/VCR remote, AV-1A direct box) Preview Monitor (for preview of signal from the Terk A/V Switcher) Auxiliary 1/8 Audio Cable (for ipod/mp3 connectivity) Cable Hooks Numerous cables are located on the hooks inside the Media Closet. They include: VGA cable, Ethernet cable, XLR cables, extension cords, and a power strip. The Media Cabinet Motorized Screen Control The switch for control of the motorized screen is located on the wall just to the left of the Media Cabinet. Lighting Control Controls for the lights are found to the right of the cable hooks. Additional lighting controls are located in the Penfold Commons (see Topic 3 for more information). Cable Hooks
P age 3 of 14 Topic 1 (continued): Overview of the Penfold Commons What s in Penfold Commons? Microphone Inputs Six microphone input plates are located in Penfold Commons. Mic inputs 4 and 5 are down by the Game Room (South End/near Frisch Hall) and not typically used for events. NOTE: While there are six input plates, there are only three knobs for volume control for these inputs on the SHURE mixer. Inputs are grouped as follows: 1 & 5, 2 & 4, and 3 & 6 A/V Wall Plate 15-pin VGA Input (used with a VGA cable to connect a laptop for display on the LCD projector) Composite Video Input (used to connect external video devices for display on the LCD projector) KEY A/V: A/V Wall Plate P: Power Outlet E: Ethernet Port 1: Mic Input 1 2: Mic Input 2 3: Mic Input 3 4: Mic Input 4 5: Mic Input 5 6: Mic Input 6 Penfold Map A/V Wall Plate Power Outlets A number of power outlets are found around the room in Penfold. See the map above for locations. Ethernet Port A network jack is available in case the presenter s laptop is not configured for use with the Canisius Wireless Network. A green Ethernet cable is kept on the hooks inside the Media Closet. Connect one end to the wall network jack and the other end to the Ethernet port on the laptop. Ethernet Port
P age 4 of 14 Topic 2: Pre-Event Equipment Check Here are a few things to before your event: Make sure the power switch on the left of the CREST Audio CKS400 Power Amplifier is set to On Make sure the MASTER volume knob on the SHURE SCM800 Mixer is set to 0 (the 12 o clock position) Amp Power Switch MASTER Volume Knob Topic 3: Adjusting the Lights There are three sets of lights in Penfold: Large ceiling lights Perimeter lighting (by the windows) Hanging tea lights The large ceiling lights are controlled with the switches located in the alcove near the Men s Room. Controls for the perimeter and hanging tea lights are found in the Media Closet to the right of the phone. Please note that some of the sliders have buttons that need to be pressed for the lights to be turned on or off. Large Ceiling Light Switches Perimeter & Tea Light Sliders
P age 5 of 14 Topic 4: Using the Motorized Screen The motorized projection screen is controlled by the wall switch found to the left of the Media Cabinet. Press the switch up to raise the screen and down to lower the screen. Topic 5: Using the ceiling-mounted LCD Projector The ceiling-mounted EPSON LCD projector is controlled with the EPSON Remote Control. This remote is kept inside a black pouch stored inside the drawer of the Media Cabinet found in the Media Closet. To turn on the LCD projector: 1. Take the remote control out of the pouch and point it at the ceiling-mounted LCD projector. 2. Press the POWER L button. The projector will beep and the projector will warm up. 3. Once the LCD projector is on, press the desired INPUT button on the remote control to display your image on the LCD projector. To turn off the LCD projector: 1. Press the POWER L button on the remote control TWICE. No light should be coming from the projector lens if it s been shut off correctly. 2. Place the remote control back into the black pouch and put it back in the drawer of the Media Cabinet.
P age 6 of 14 Topic 6: Using the DVD Player to Play a DVD 1. Lower the motorized screen (see Topic 4 ) and turn on the LCD projector (see Topic 5 ). 2. Once the LCD projector has warmed up, press the VIDEO button on the EPSON Projector Remote Control until the projector is set to VIDEO mode; the selected mode will display in the upper right corner of the screen. 3. Make sure that the DVD button is pressed on the Terk A/V Switcher. The switcher is located just above the SONY DVD player. 4. In the Media Cabinet, locate the SONY DVD player and insert your DVD into the disc tray. The SONY Remote Control is kept inside the drawer of the Media Cabinet. 5. Control can be handled with the buttons on the face of the combo unit or with the SONY Remote. 6. A small color monitor is located at the bottom of the Media Cabinet and is used to preview the DVD player; this is useful when navigating a DVD menu. 7. Volume is adjusted by using the DVD knob on the SHURE mixer.
P age 7 of 14 Topic 7: Using the DVD Player to Play a CD 1. In the Media Cabinet, locate the SONY DVD player. Press the POWER button on the left-side of the DVD player or the POWER button on the corresponding SONY Remote Control to turn it on. The remote is kept inside the drawer of the Media Cabinet. 2. Turn on small color preview monitor located in the Media Cabinet. This will help aid you in controlling playback of the audio CD. 3. Press the OPEN/CLOSE button on the SONY DVD player and insert your CD into the disc tray. Press the button again to close the tray. 4. After the DVD player reads the disc, press the PLAY button on either the DVD player or the SONY remote to start playing the CD. 5. Use the buttons on the SONY Remote (arrow buttons, ENTER button, PLAY, STOP, PAUSE, etc.) to control playback of the CD. 6. Volume is adjusted by using the DVD/VCR knob on the SHURE mixer. Shuffle CD Tracks (Random) 1. Press the DISPLAY button on the remote control during playback to view the Control Menu. 2. Use the up & down arrow buttons to select the SHUFFLE icon and then press ENTER. The options for SHUFFLE will then appear. 3. Select TRACK and then press ENTER. 4. Press the CLEAR button on the remote to turn off shuffle playback. Repeat CD Tracks 1. Press the DISPLAY button on the remote control during playback to view the Control Menu. 2. Use the up & down arrow buttons to select the REPEAT icon and then press ENTER. The options for REPEAT will then appear. 3. Select the item to be repeated (DISC or TRACK) and then press ENTER. 4. Press the CLEAR button on the remote to turn off repeat playback. Topic 8: Connecting & Displaying a Laptop on the LCD Projector 1. Take the 15-pin VGA cable from off one of the cable hooks In the Media Closet and connect one end to the 15-pin VGA port on the A/V Wall Plate. NOTE: This step should already be done for you. 2. Connect the other end of the 15-pin VGA cable to the matching monitor port on the laptop. A VGA adapter will be needed if you are using a device (MacBook, ipad, etc.) that does not have a VGA port. P age 8 of 14 Topic 8 (continued): Connecting & Displaying a Laptop on the LCD Projector 3. Lower the motorized screen (see Topic 4 ) and turn on the LCD projector (see Topic 5 ). 4. Once the LCD projector has warmed up, press the COMPUTER button on the EPSON Projector Remote Control until the projector is set to COMPUTER1 mode; the selected mode will display in the upper right corner of the screen. 5. Power on the laptop. 6. If an image appears on the laptop or projector only, try toggling the output of the laptop so that the image is mirrored on the laptop and projector. Windows 7 / 8: Press the Windows logo key and P key together until Duplicate is selected. Mac OS: Click on Displays in System Preferences and then click on the Arrangement tab. Click on the Mirror Displays checkbox. Windows XP or older: Hold down the Fn key and pressing the LCD/CRT button on the laptop keyboard (an F key, usually in the F3 - F8 range, located above the row of number keys). Pressing this key combination will cycle through showing the image just on the laptop, on both the laptop and the screen, or just on the screen. Please note that the LCD projector in Penfold Commons has a native 4:3 aspect ratio. A laptop resolution of 1024 x 768 is recommended when displaying your laptop on this LCD projector.
P age 9 of 14 Topic 9: Setup of Laptop Audio In order to connect your laptop s headphone jack to the audio system, you will need the following: AV-1A direct box (kept in drawer of Media Cabinet) 1/8 to Stereo RCA cable (kept w/ AV-1A direct box) XLR cable (kept on hooks in Media Closet) Available microphone input Microphone Input 1. Connect the female end of the XLR cable to the AV-1A Direct Box. 2. Connect the male end of the XLR cable to the available microphone input. AV-1A Direct Box and Cable Note the number of the input. 3. Connect the Stereo RCA connectors to the Stereo Line Level Inputs on the AV-1A Direct Box. 4. Connect the 1/8 audio connector to the headphone jack on your laptop or other device. 5. Adjust the appropriate knob (matches the number on the microphone input plate) on the SHURE mixer. P age 10 of 14 Topic 10: Connecting an ipod, MP3 Player, etc. An 1/8 audio cable (labeled MP3) is found near the bottom of the Media Cabinet. In order to play music from an ipod, MP3 player, etc., simply connect this cable to the headphone jack on the device. Volume is adjusted by using the MP3 knob on the SHURE mixer. 1/8 Audio Cable Connecting the cable MP3 Volume Knob Topic 11: Using the AM/FM Radio Tuner The AM/FM Radio Tuner is found just above the JVC DVD/VCR in the Media Cabinet. In order to play the radio, simply press the POWER button on the left-side of the unit to turn it on. Volume is adjusted by using the RADIO knob on the SHURE mixer. Press the BAND button to switch between AM and FM. Tuning controls are found on the right-side of the unit.
P age 11 of 14 Topic 12: Connecting a Microphone / Adjusting Microphone Volume In order to connect a microphone, you will need the following: Microphone (kept in drawer of Media Cabinet) XLR cable (kept on hooks in Media Closet) Available microphone input XLR Cable Connectors Microphone Microphone Input 1. Connect the female end of the XLR cable to the SM58 microphone. 2. Connect the male end of the XLR cable to the available microphone input. Note the number of the input. 3. Adjust the appropriate knob (matches the number on the microphone input plate) on the SHURE mixer. Step 1 Step 2 Step 3
P age 12 of 14 Topic 13: Setup of External Video (gaming systems, etc.) 1. Lower the motorized screen (see Topic 4 ) and turn on the LCD projector (see Topic 5 ). 2. Once the LCD projector has warmed up, press the VIDEO button on the EPSON Projector Remote Control until the projector is set to VIDEO mode; the selected mode will display in the upper right corner of the screen. 3. Connect the composite video cable from your external device to the composite video input on the A/V Wall Plate. 4. In the Media Cabinet, locate the Terk A/V Switcher and press the AV Wall Plate button. 5. Power on your external device (video game system, camera, etc.) and the image should now appear on the LCD projector. You can also view the image on the small color monitor located at the bottom of the Media Cabinet. Topic 14: Setup of External Audio (gaming systems, etc.) In order to connect the audio cables from your external device (video game system, etc.) to the audio system in Penfold Commons, you will need the following: AV-1A direct box (kept in drawer of Media Cabinet) XLR cable (kept on hooks in Media Closet) Available microphone input Microphone Input AV-1A Direct Box
P age 13 of 14 Topic 14 (continued): Setup of External Audio (gaming systems, etc.) 1. Connect the female end of the XLR cable to the AV-1A Direct Box. 2. Connect the male end of the XLR cable to the available microphone input. Note the number of the input. 3. Connect the Stereo RCA connectors from your external device to the Stereo Line Level Inputs on the AV-1A Direct Box. 4. Adjust the appropriate knob (matches the number on the microphone input plate) on the SHURE mixer. Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 Topic 15: Using a Wireless Microphone / Adjusting Wireless Microphone Volume A separate rack comes equipped with wireless handheld microphones and one wireless lavaliere microphone. Setup of these microphones is handled by either Media Center or Event Services staff. If you want to utilize a wireless microphone for your event, make sure that it is requested in advance so that staff can have it set out in the Media Closet for you. Please make sure any wireless microphones used are locked back up in the Media Closet after your event ends. Topic 16: Watching Cable TV There is no built-in cable TV tuner in the Palisano Media Cabinet. If you want to be able to watch cable TV during your event, make sure that it is requested in advance so that staff can have the appropriate equipment set out in the Media Closet for you.
