APD 19 Circular Harsh Environment Connector Built for Commercial/Off-Road Vehicle and Transportation Applications The intense vibration, moisture and generally harsh environments present in offroad and transportation applications demand components capable of withstanding such conditions. Connectors, in particular, must not merely tolerate these conditions, but they must also conform to DIN and other design/application specification requirements. ITT Interconnect Solutions developed the APD connector family several years ago to meet the requirements of off-road customers and applications. The APD connectors are highly reliable, direct, in-line, multi-pin connector solutions. With the entire connector solution completely resistant to engine, transmission and brake fluids, the sealed circular, plastic and bayonet coupling connectors were developed specifically for the harsh environments found in commercial vehicle and industrial applications. All types can be equipped with various endbell types, for shrouded/conduit tubes The APD connectors were originally designed in accordance with DIN72858 specifications and above, and available in 1- and 2-pure power position versions as well as 3-, 4-, 6-, 7-, 37-, and 51-position versions. Yet even with the wide range of configurations, ITT recognized a gap between the 7- and 37-position connectors. The solution to closing this distance in contacts is the recently developed APD 19-way connector, which utilizes patentpending technology related to the locking feature. As the name indicates, this version features 19 contacts, with the option of increasing the number to 27 upon request. For example, if customers require more contacts, smaller contact sizes can be implemented. Conversely, if a customer requires a connector capable of carrying a bigger load, the pin count can be reduced by using higher power contacts up to 50mm 2 and AWG 0. The APD 27 design is adapted from the APD 19 connector and features a higher pin count with smaller contact crimp sizes With this addition to the product line, ITT provides customers with the flexibility necessary to meet any wet area or harsh environment application requirements. The fundamental difference in construction between the 19-position connector and the other devices in the APD connector family is the secondary locking mechanism present in the APD 19 design. In addition to the increased reliability, no special contact removal tools are required to unlock the secondary locking contact-insert in the field, meeting ITT s initial goal in the development phase of a user-friendly device. With no dedicated tools other than a screwdriver to unlock the contact-insert in the field, the user is provided with a simplified means of correcting any of problems that may arise. Page 2 of 5
Both the flange and plug feature contact secondary locking that can be unlocked without the use of costly tools The connector also features audible and visual indication when mated and locked, along with up to four different mechanical/key and color codings to avoid miss-mating. Easy assembly during harness and mating provides further simplification for the end-user, which will provide more value at total cost of ownership. These features along with several other modifications allow the APD 19 connector to be used as a urea-sealed connector as well. Currently in development is a PCB JamNut and flange receptacle. Along with meeting DIN72585 requirements, the robust APD 19-way connector meets IP69(K) approvals and is available in plug, flange and JamNut designs. Supplemental accessories are also available including a straight and 90-degree endbell in various types for shrouded/corrugated tubes, which can be used in all plug, flange and JamNut versions. The APD 19 circular plastic connector features standard APK 16 contacts with 0.35mm 2 to 1.5mm 2 (AWG 22-15) in either tin or gold plating stamped and formed as well as machined contacts. All wires are individually sealed, and optional end sealing is available. Page 3 of 5
Core electrical specifications for the connector are noted below: Maximum Voltage 12-48VDC Maximum Current 12A @ 85 C; 105 C short time at 1.5mm 2 Operating Temperature -40 C to +125 C Sealing IP67 to IP69K Durability 50 mating cycles Plug and flange connector designs ITT s APD connector provides significant technical and performance advantages over comparable circular connectors. The APD 1- and 2-position designs are unique to the marketplace worldwide, and the APD 1-way covers a current up to 250A, while the maximum current for the APD 2-way is 80A, both unique and according to DIN 72585 specifications. ITT is also capable of providing the APD connector as a bulkhead connector with two ranges of wall thickness, and offers a flange version that is not available from most competitors. The connector not only conforms to IP69K standards; but the K element signifies the connector meets most commercial vehicle standards as well. Page 4 of 5
Perhaps the most significant benefit is ITT s ability to modify existing designs according to any customer s specifications and applications, whether it is the addition of a PCB contact, a change in the number of contacts within the design, or even adapting the APD connector for solenoid applications. The versatility, reliability and high vibration capability makes the APD family of connectors ideal for a significant number of applications in the off-road and transportation markets, including solenoids, motor control units, switch control systems, traction, brake and valve control, powertrain, transmission, and motor control units. The connectors can also be used as backplane connectors for chassis and cabin applications. Unique to the APD 19-way is the ability to modify the design for use as a Canbus interconnection solution with minimal modification and sealing up to IP69K. APD connector in transmission application The APD connector family is a robust circular bayonet connector solution designed to meet the needs of OEMs and subcontractors worldwide in the offroad and transportation segments. Conforming to the DIN72585 standards as defined by OEMs for these arenas along with ITT s stringent testing and qualifications, the APD connectors set themselves apart through their versatility, reliability, and ease-of-use. ITT has designed a connector solution that meets an increasing number of customer demands while fulfilling a wide range of applications. Page 5 of 5
