MicroLab Posts, Bases, and Rails www.mellesgriot.com Stable mounting and positioning are required to build optical systems. In the laboratory, posts and post holders are commonly used for mounting optical component holders because they permit a significant amount of vertical and angular adjustment for coarse alignment, without sacrificing rigidity. Post connectors provide added mounting flexibility with right-angle or adjustable-angle post combinations. Pillars also provide stable structures for mounting optical components. They can be positioned anywhere on an optical table and securely held in place with a clamping fork. A pillar mounting platform can then be added to the top of a pillar, or several pillars can be stacked together. Twenty-millimeter-diameter posts can be used if taller pillars are required. Slotted mounting bases are available for mounting and positioning component holders, post holders, and positioning stages. Versions are available for both ¼-- and M6-threaded tables and breadboards, as well as for M2-threaded breadboards. The base platform of the MicroLab system is either an optical rail or an optical breadboard or table. The components in this chapter allow interfacing with traditional ¼-- and M6-threaded breadboards, as well as M2-threaded miniature breadboards. The most compact optical systems can be built on the M2 breadboards. Both one-sided and four-sided optical rails are available. The traditional one-sided rails can act as a base by themselves, be bolted to a ¼-- or M6-threaded breadboard, or be assembled into twoand three-dimensional structures. Optical components are mounted to optical rail carriers that slide on the rail. The more stable four-sided rails are preferred for building structures. They can be connected end to end, side to side, or side to end. Fixed Optical Mounts MicroLab posts and rails allow stable mounting of optical components. 21.14 1

www.mellesgriot.com Fixed Optical Mounts Post Holders and Accessories $ 4- and 8-mm bore diameters $ Threaded or flanged base MicroLab post holders provide a simple method of adjusting the height and angular orientation of 4- and 8-mm-diameter posts. Six different heights are offered for both bore diameters. Post holders are available with either an M4-threaded base or a flanged base. M4-threaded post holders will screw into component positioners and bases. Flanged-base post holders attach to components with the standard hole pattern. A unique feature of the flanged-base post holders is their narrow profile, which allows optical components to be very closely spaced. The height-locking thumbscrew on the flanged-base post holders can be mounted on either side, allowing the most convenient access to the thumbscrew. Post collars are useful for maintaining the height of a post when rotating it in a post holder. They also allow the post to be removed from the post holder and then replaced to the exact same height. Miniature Optical Breadboards $ M2-threaded holes on -mm centers $ Clearance holes for tabletop or standoff mounting Standard optical breadboards and tables are appropriate for large components, however miniature optics usually need smaller component holders and much closer spacing and therefore require smaller breadboards. www.mellesgriot.com Fixed Optical Mounts Optical-Rail Systems $ One- and four-sided optical rails $ A range of rail-carrier lengths $ Connectors for two- and three-dimensional assemblies One-sided optical rails are available in four lengths: 0, 0, 0, and 00 mm. The rails are slotted for bolting to ¼- or M6-threaded surfaces and have an M6-threaded hole in each end for vertical mounting. Four-sided optical rails are strong enough to build three dimensional optical structures. They can be connected together with either optical rail T-connectors or corner connectors (recommended for a more stable structure). The slotted mounting holes and M6-threaded holes on the rails can also be used to bolt two rails together. The length of rail carriers often limits how closely optical components can be spaced. If a four-sided optical rail is mounted on pillars beside a one-sided rail, alternating the mounting of components allows spacing to be much closer together. Optical rail carriers are available in three lengths: 6, 12, and mm. All carriers have an array of M2 holes and a central M4 hole. The underside of the carriers has a low-friction coating for smooth sliding. T-connectors, and vertical mounting bases can be used to build three-dimensional structures. The optical rail system components are made of black-anodized aluminum. One-Sided 19-mm Optical Rails These MicroLab -compatible rails have slots that allow clearance for M6 and ¼- cap screws.
