PSG-01S USB Microphone Speaker User's Manual

Introduction Thank ou for purchasing Yamaha PSG-01S. This product is a USB microphone/speaker unit to be connected to a computer with the USB cable for use as its audio terminal. Before operating this unit, please read this manual carefull. Communication You can use this unit as a microphone speaker for Skpe. Incorporating this unit as the microphone/speaker into the Skpe sstem provides a smoother conversation experience for both listeners and talkers. Listening You can use this unit as a stereo speaker. Two small high-efficienc speakers enable stereo plaback for broadband audio signals. Recording You can use this unit as a recording microphone. Four unidirectional microphones enable high-qualit recording suited for various using scenes. Skpe website: http://www.skpe.com/ Setup To use this unit with Skpe, ou need to carr out the following setup procedure. For further information, refer to "Quick Start Guide" supplied with this unit. 1 Connect the PC/Mac to the Internet. 2 Connect this unit to the PC/Mac using the supplied USB cable. Making a call 1 Stand this unit on a flat surface. OPERATIONS 3 Install Skpe. 4 Install the PSG-01S Controller and then run the PSG-01S Controller. 5 On Skpe, permit access from the PSG- 01S Controller. Note appears in the task tra/menu bar. The setup is complete. When appears in the task tra/menu bar, ou cannot access Skpe from the PSG-01S Controller. To use this unit with Skpe, permit access from the PSG-01S Controller on Skpe. This unit rings the Stle-shift sound (chimes) when the installation stle is changed. If the Stle-shift sound does not ring or if the error sounds (buzzer sounds) are output, reinstall this unit properl. 2 Specif a phone number to call. 3 Press (off-hook). The phone call starts. 4 Start a conversation. Adjust the speaker volume if necessar. 5 Press (on-hook). The call ends. Accepting an incoming call 1 While receiving an incoming call, stand this unit on a flat surface and then press (off-hook). 2 Start a conversation. Adjust the speaker volume if necessar. 3 Press (on-hook). The call ends. 5

Rejecting an incoming call 1 While receiving an incoming call, press (on-hook). The incoming call ends. Muting the microphones 1 During a Skpe call, la down this unit. The microphones are turned off temporaril. To turn on microphones, stand this unit again. 6

Listening B laing down this unit, ou can use this unit as a stereo speaker. This state is called "Relax stle". 1 Connect this unit to the PC/Mac using the supplied USB cable. Recording While a Skpe call is not active, ou can use this unit as a recording microphone b standing this unit (Active stle) and pressing REC MIC. 1 Connect this unit to the PC/Mac using the supplied USB cable. Note To use this unit with a Mac, ou need to configure the sound settings. For details, refer to "Using in the Listening/Recording mode" (page 17). 2 La down this unit. If ou receive a Skpe call while this unit is used as a stereo speaker, this unit gives priorit to the Skpe call. For information about how to handle a Skpe call, refer to "Communication" (page 5). 3 Press (REC MIC). This unit can be used as a recording microphone. 4 Press (REC MIC). Note The recording microphone mode is deactivated. If ou cannot record sounds using this unit's microphones, this unit ma not be selected as a sound recording device on our PC/ Mac. Refer to "Checking the Connection" (page 14). This unit rings the Stle-shift sound (chimes) when the installation stle is changed. If the Stle-shift sound does not ring or if the error sounds (buzzer sounds) are output, reinstall this unit properl. If ou receive a Skpe call while this unit is used as a recording microphone, this unit gives priorit to the Skpe call. For information about how to handle a Skpe call, refer to "Communication" (page 5). Basic operations of the PSG-01S Controller This section explains about the basic operations of the PSG-01S Controller. 1 Connect this unit to the PC using the supplied USB cable. Notes The icon displaed in the task tra switches to. Do not connect more than one microphone speaker (including this unit) to the PC at the same time. When appears in the task tra, ou cannot access Skpe from the PSG-01S Controller. To use this unit with Skpe, permit access from the PSG-01S Controller on Skpe ( appears in the task tra). In the case that does not appear after this unit is connected to the computer, select [Start] - [All Programs] - [Yamaha PSG-01S] - [PSG-01S Controller] to start the PSG-01S Controller. To start the PSG-01S Controller on PC start-up, click and then select "Start PSG-01S Controller on PC start-up". 2 Click in the task tra and then select "View PSG-01S Controller". The "PSG-01S Controller" screen appears. Using the PSG-01S Controller To quit the PSG-01S Controller Follow the procedure below to quit the PSG-01S Controller. Click in the task tra and then select "Exit". The PSG-01S Controller exits. Basic operations of the PSG-01S Controller This section explains about the basic operations of the PSG-01S Controller. 1 Connect this unit to the Mac using the supplied USB cable. Notes The icon displaed in the menu bar switches to. Do not connect more than one microphone speaker (including this unit) to the Mac at the same time. When appears in the menu bar, ou cannot access Skpe from the PSG-01S Controller. To use this unit with Skpe, permit access from the PSG-01S Controller on Skpe ( appears in the menu bar). In the case that does not appear in the menu bar, select [Go] - [Applications] - [Yamaha PSG-01S] - [PSG-01S Controller] from the Finder menu bar to start the PSG-01S Controller. To start the PSG-01S Controller at Mac login, check "Open at Login" in the "Dock" menu. 2 From the PSG-01S Controller menu bar, select [Window] - [PSG-01S Controller]. The "PSG-01S Controller" screen appears. 3 Configure the settings. Configure the settings of this unit according to the use environment. 8

To quit the PSG-01S Controller Follow the procedure below to quit the PSG-01S Controller. From the PSG-01S Controller menu bar, select [PSG- 01S Controller] - [Quit PSG-01S Controller]. The PSG-01S Controller exits. Home ( ) tab 1 2 3 1 Shows the status of this unit. OPERATIONS Note If this unit is installed incorrectl, "INVALID" is displaed. In this case, the microphones and speakers of this unit are automaticall muted. The speaker mute is disabled onl when a dialing tone or a ringtone of a Skpe call sounds. 2 Adjusts the speaker volume of this unit. 3 Starts Skpe or the specified application. For details, refer to "Configuring SHORTCUT" (page 11). Audio ( ) tab 1 2 3 1 Adjusts the microphone sensitivit of this unit. 2 Enables or disables the microphone attenuator for recording microphone. 3 Shows the audio input/output status of this unit. 9

If ou select "OFF", the error sounds are also disabled. 3 Selects a function used when this unit is shaken. For details, refer to "Configuring the shake function" (page 11). 4 Switches the USB bandwidth usage. For details, refer to "Switching the USB bandwidth usage" (page 11). 1 Updates the firmware of this unit. For details, refer to "Using the Latest Features" (page 12). 2 Resets the settings of this unit. Note Note the followings before resetting this unit. The reset operation will change all the settings to the default value (if available). You cannot restore the settings to the previous status after the reset operation. 3 Shows this manual. 4 Shows the version information of the firmware of this unit and the PSG-01S Controller. 10

Configuring SHORTCUT Follow the procedure below to select an application to be started b clicking "Go" in "SHORTCUT". 1 In the PSG-01S Controller screen, click the Home tab. 2 In "SHORTCUT", select "Select application". 3 Select the desired application and then click "Open". Configuring the shake function Follow the procedure below to select a function to be activated when this unit is shaken. 1 In the PSG-01S Controller screen, click the General setting tab. 2 In Shake, select a function to be assigned. Open/close PSG-01S Controller: Select this if ou want to open or close the PSG-01S Controller Maximize audio level: Select this if ou want to set the volume to the maximum. OFF: Select this if ou do not use the shake function. Switching the USB bandwidth usage Follow the procedure below to switch the USB bandwidth usage. This unit restarts automaticall when ou change this setting. 1 In the PSG-01S Controller screen, click the General setting tab. 2 In "Bandwidth usage", select "Standard (stereo)" or "Narrow band (monaural)". If this unit is connected to a PC/Mac conjunction with other USB devices such as Web camera, this unit ma operate abnormall. In this case, select "Narrow band (monaural)". Notes While this unit is operating in a narrow band, it plas back audio in monaural even in "Relax stle". You cannot switch the USB bandwidth usage during a Skpe call. In case that ou cannot adjust the speaker volume or microphone sensitivit after switching the USB bandwidth usage, disconnect the USB cable and reconnect it. Uninstalling the PSG-01S Controller To uninstall the PSG-01S Controller from the PC, select [Start] - [All Programs] - [Yamaha PSG-01S] - [Uninstall PSG-01S Controller]. When ou use Windows 7 or Windows Vista, a warning message regarding uninstallation ma appear. Click "Allow" to continue the uninstallation because Yamaha has alread confirmed the operation. OPERATIONS When shaking this unit Jiggle this unit up and down to activate the selected function. Be careful not to remove the USB cable during shaking. Note To uninstall the PSG-01S controller, log on with the user account used for setup. Uninstalling the PSG-01S Controller To uninstall the PSG-01S Controller from the Mac, select [Go] - [Applications] from the Finder menu bar and then drag the "Yamaha PSG-01S" folder to the trash icon. Note To uninstall the PSG-01S controller, log on as a user with the Administrator rights. 11

Using the Latest Features You can download the firmware (program to control the functions of this unit) to use the latest features. In this section, indicates information for Windows users and indicates information for Mac OS users. Updating the firmware via a network 4 Select "Download from the network" and then click "Start". In this section, Windows 7 is used as an example. Notes Firmware update is available onl if the PC/Mac connecting to this unit is connected to the Internet. To update the firmware without connection to the Internet, follow "Updating the firmware using a local file" (page 13). Once the firmware update is started, do not perform an other operation until the update operation is completed. If the update operation is interrupted, this unit ma become unusable, in which case ou need to return this unit to the factor for repairs. Do not remove the USB cable or LAN cable during the firmware update. Otherwise, this unit could become unusable, in which case ou need to return this unit to the factor for repairs. The firmware version confirmation screen appears. 5 Check the latest firmware version and then click "OK". The firmware update starts. 1 In the PSG-01S Controller screen, click the Maintenance tab. 2 In "Firmware update", click "Confirm". The license agreement screen appears. 3 Read the contents of license agreement carefull, select "Accept all terms of the license agreement" and then click "OK". To specif the firmware download URL This feature is useful in managing the firmware versions of multiple units. 1 In the firmware update screen, click "Settings". The setting screen appears. 2 Enter the URL from which to download the firmware. You can restore the default URL b clicking "Default". The firmware update screen appears. 3 Click "OK". The firmware download URL is set. 12

Updating the firmware using a local file If the PC/Mac connecting to the PSG-01S cannot be connected to the Internet, follow the procedure below to update the firmware manuall using a local file. Checking the firmware release note You can check the firmware release note b clicking "Release note" in the firmware update screen. Notes Once the firmware update is started, do not perform an other operation until the update operation is completed. If the update operation is interrupted, this unit ma become unusable, in which case ou need to return this unit to the factor for repairs. Do not remove the USB cable during the firmware update. The firmware version confirmation screen appears. 6 Check the latest firmware version and then click "OK" to start the firmware update. The firmware update starts. 13

Using in the Communication mode Follow the procedure below to check whether Skpe recognizes this unit properl and this unit is selected as an audio device. 1 Right-click and then select [Open Skpe] - [Tools] - [Options]. The "Options" screen appears. 2 Click "Audio settings". Using in the Communication mode Follow the procedure below to check whether Skpe recognizes this unit properl and this unit is selected as an audio device. 1 From the menu bar for Skpe, select [Skpe] - [Preferences]. 2 Click "Audio". Click Click 3 Check the settings. "Microphone": Yamaha PSG-01S "Speakers": Yamaha PSG-01S "Ringing": Yamaha PSG-01S 3 Check the settings. Using in the Listening/ Recording mode 5 Check whether this unit is selected as "Default Device". Follow the procedure below to check whether the PC recognizes this unit properl. When using Windows 7/Windows Vista In this procedure, Windows 7 is used as an example. 1 Click and then select "Audio Device Properties". The "Sound" screen appears. Check 2 Click the "Plaback" tab. Click 3 Check whether this unit is selected as "Default Device". Normall, "Yamaha PSG-01S" is automaticall selected when this unit is connected to the PC. If "Yamaha PSG- 01S" is not selected, select it manuall. 6 Click "OK" to close the "Sound" screen. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Check Normall, "Yamaha PSG-01S" is automaticall selected when this unit is connected to the PC. If "Yamaha PSG- 01S" is not selected, select it manuall. 4 Click the "Recording" tab. Click 15
