Overview HP Smart Update Manager (HP SUM) is a versatile tl that allws yu t update ne r mre systems and the devices within thse systems at a single time. This paper describes the many chices available using this flexible tl by prviding a list f update capabilities and best practices fr different situatins, with a fcus n HP Integrity servers. Disclaimer: The suggested best practices in this dcument are fr cmmn cnfiguratins. HP supprt and custmers may wrk tgether with specific installatin details t prvide different advice that is better fr thse situatins. This dcument references functinality prvided in HP SUM 5.3.0 and later fr HP Integrity i2 and later systems. HP SUM des nt supprt any updates n lder HP Integrity servers. Basic HP SUM usage and trubleshting is similar fr lder HP SUM releases, but sme functins might nt be available r might act slightly differently. High-level Summary Recent HP SUM enhancements allw yu t update I/O card firmware n HP Integrity servers via HP-UX OS installatins. HP SUM shuld be run frm a system with full netwrk cnnectivity t bth management and OS netwrks. Use HP Systems Insight Manager (HP SIM) t update mre than 50 servers r devices in a single management sessin. Overall Firmware Update Flw 3

Update Capabilities HP SUM can help an administratr manage enclsure, platfrm and I/O card firmware n HP Integrity servers. Updates are perfrmed thrugh management interfaces and the perating system. Because the perating system is used fr sme updates, the specific HP SUM update capabilities might vary accrding t the perating system running n the servers. Rack-munt servers c-class enclsures HP-UX Platfrm FW (ilo, SFW) via ilo I/O card FW via OS Enclsure FW (OA, VC) via OA, VC Platfrm FW (ilo, SFW) via ilo I/O card FW via OS OpenVMS r NnStp Platfrm FW (ilo, SFW) via ilo Enclsure FW (OA, VC) via OA, VC Platfrm FW (ilo, SFW) via ilo Superdme 2 enclsures Enclsure FW (cmplex) via OA Platfrm FW (npar) via OA I/O card FW via OS n/a 4

HP Integrity Servers Running HP-UX HP SUM can interact with bth management interfaces and HP-UX t prvide enclsure, platfrm and I/O card firmware updates. T update all firmware in the same sessin, yu must run HP SUM frm a system that has netwrk access t bth the management and OS interfaces. HP Integrity Servers Running OpenVMS r NnStp HP SUM can interact nly with the management interface n HP Integrity systems running ther OpenVMS r NnStp perating systems. Therefre, it can nly prvide enclsure and platfrm firmware updates. I/O card firmware must be manually updated using the traditinal EFI packages methd n these systems. Mixed HP PrLiant and Integrity Envirnments Bth HP PrLiant and Integrity servers can be updated by the same versin f HP SUM sftware, and can be dne in the same HP SUM sessin cncurrently. There are extra steps t be aware f when the servers are in the same enclsure. If yu are updating an envirnment with bth HP PrLiant and Integrity servers in the same enclsure, d the fllwing: Review the supprt matrix. Be sure t use OA and VC versins supprted by bth HP PrLiant and Integrity servers. Fr mre infrmatin, see the HP BladeSystem Release Sets fr Mixed PrLiant and Integrity website at: h18004.www1.hp.cm/prducts/servers/firmware/mixed-release-sets.html Dwnlad the latest HP Service Pack fr PrLiant (SPP) and HP Integrity server bundles. Unzip the HP SPP and Integrity bundles int separate directries. Run HP SUM frm the latest bundle. It must be HP SUM 5.0.0 r later t supprt bth HP PrLiant and Integrity. In HP SUM, add the separate directries as separate repsitries n the Surce Selectins page (HP SUM 5.3.5) r add the directries as baselines n the Baseline Library screen (HP SUM 6.0.0 and later) Perfrm yur updates. 5

Best Practices Mre detailed dcuments n HP SUM best practices, including planning and implementing guides encmpassing HP Integrity and PrLiant servers, are prvided in the HP SUM Infrmatin Library at www.hp.cm/g/hpsum/dcumentatin. This dcument includes additinal details n HP Integrity specific issues. Netwrk Cnnectivity HP Integrity servers have bth management netwrk and prductin interfaces. Usually these are kept n separate subnets within an installatin. T perfrm full remte administratin f the server, access is required t bth netwrks. There are three general scenaris t manage this cnnectivity issue: 1) Keep the netwrks cmpletely islated, and manage management and OS tasks separately. 2) Enable ruting between the tw netwrks by enabling a system n either netwrk t access the ther and d simultaneus management and OS tasks. 3) Blck ruting between netwrks, but allw a third netwrk, r pssibly just specific servers, access t rute t bth netwrks. This allws simultaneus management and OS tasks t be cmpleted, but frm specific lcatins. This ptin prvides netwrk islatin, but als allws full remte administratin. 6

Management and prductin netwrks bth reachable Yu can use HP SUM in any f the scenaris listed previusly, but the secnd tw scenaris allw taking advantage f the mst functinality. When HP SUM can access and update bth netwrks at nce, it can d dependency checking between OS and management revisins n the same server. HP SUM can als usually be used t require nly a single rebt t activate bth types f updates, which reduces verall dwntime. Nte: Tw steps are still recmmended when updating an entire c-class enclsure including the OA. In thse cases, OA, VC and ilo firmware updates shuld be dne in ne step, and then HP-UX I/O firmware updates shuld be dne. 7

Management and prductin netwrks islated If the netwrks are islated, yu must run HP SUM twice, nce frm a system n the management netwrk and again frm a system cnnected t the OS netwrk. It is imprtant fr yu t manually check any dependencies and rebt requirements between the tw installatins. Enclsure Level Updates When an entire enclsure is available fr updates, HP SUM can be used t update the entire enclsure, platfrm and I/O card firmware. It is recmmended t update Superdme 2, OA, VC and ilo firmware in ne HP SUM step and then update I/O card firmware next. 8

After setting the schedule, click the Install buttn and leave the HP SUM applicatin running. 9) After HP SUM cmpletes and the npartitin has finished rebting yu can cntinue with ther updates nt cntrlled by HP SUM. HP-UX sftware and driver patches can be installed. HP SUM 6.0.0 and later Instructins Fllw the Superdme 2 instructins abve, but at step 6 during Deply, pen the Select Devices sectin f the Deply page and chse an Partitin/Blades frm the Update Type menu. Then select the individual partitin(s) that yu want t update. Click Analysis t save the settings and then cntinue with Deply. 18

Updates Withut Netwrk Access If n remte netwrk access t run HP SUM is available in a specific situatin then I/O firmware updates can still be applied t HP-UX systems manually using the cmpnents in HP SUM Integrity server bundles. The firmware smart cmpnents can be cpied t the HP-UX system and individually executed. 1) Dwnlad the HP SUM Integrity bundle fr Linux HP SUM t the HP-UX server 2) Unzip and untar the HP SUM bundle 3) Execute the smart cmpnents, which are named CPnnnnnn.scexe individually. Nte: Use the h ptin t list additinal executin ptins. Enterprise Level Updates / HP Systems Insight Manager The number f systems that HP SUM can update at a time n its wn depends n the server cnfiguratin that HP SUM is running n. Prcessr pwer, memry and netwrk bandwidth can cntribute t the limitatin. A general rule f thumb wuld be t start testing with a cuple enclsures r abut 30 40 targets and increase the number f targets if perfrmance was acceptable. When a larger number f systems need t be updated, HP SIM 7.0 and later can help crdinate the updates. HP SIM uses the embedded versin f HP SUM t sequence thrugh grups f servers, calling HP SUM multiple times t perfrm the updates. This allws yu t have ne pint f cntrl, instead f running HP SUM individually multiple times. 19

Activating Firmware Updates Sme updates take effect immediately, sme require an OS reset t activate and sme require a server pwer cycle t activate. HP SUM understands the requirements f each update and can include the apprpriate cmmands in the update sequence if enabled. Enabling HP SUM t perfrm the necessary cmmands will result in them being sequenced as clse as pssible t the updates, reducing verall dwntime. Therefre, it is recmmended that when perfrming an update, yu schedule the system t expect a rebt at the end f the firmware update prcess. In sme cases, leaving a system with nnactivated firmware can lead t the inability t rebt until the firmware is activated. Firmware Type Activatin Required Ntes Integrated Lights Out (ilo) Nne effective immediately ilo autmatically resets itself at the end f the update withut affecting server peratin. System FW (SFW) Pwer cycle (DC) Firmware is staged in ilo memry as Pending until system pwer is turned ff. Then prgramming ccurs and takes apprximately 6 minutes, during which time pwer cannt be turned back n. Leaving SFW in Pending might prevent system reset r bt, s it s recmmended t activate as sn as pssible. Onbard Administratr (OA) Virtual Cnnect (VC) Superdme 2 Cmplex FW Superdme 2 npartitin FW I/O card FW Nne effective immediately Nne effective immediately Nne effective immediately OS rebt Varies per vendr/card OS rebt Nne effective immediately In redundant OA cnfiguratins, the standby OA is prgrammed and reset, and then it takes ver as Active. Then the ther OA is prgrammed and reset, and resumes the Active rll. In single OA cnfiguratins, the OA is prgrammed and resets. These updates d nt affect server peratins. Virtual cnnect firmware is dwnladed t all intercnnect mdules at nce and then each mdule is reset in sequence. Cmplex FW, which includes OA FW, is prgrammed and the affected devices reset t activate if needed withut affecting server peratin. npartitin FW is prgrammed during the update prcess, but the new versin is nt read and used by the OS until the next OS rebt. Sme I/O cards supprt immediate activatin f new firmware; sme cards prgram the new firmware, but d nt read and use it until the next OS rebt; and sme cards actually have firmware prgrammed during the next rebt. 20

Cnclusin HP SUM is a versatile and flexible tl that can manage enclsure, platfrm and I/O card firmware n HP Integrity servers. Updating single servers, enclsures r multiple enclsures is pssible in a single HP SUM sessin. Using HP SUM in the crrect manner can help reduce dwntime due t firmware upgrades, and autmate the prcess f upgrading firmware, therefre reducing the cmplexity f this critical task. Appendix A: Trubleshting Failed t Dwnlad Cmpnent / HTTP Access Issue HP SUM requires a bi-directinal link t the target t cmplete the firmware update prcess. HP SUM may be able t perfrm discvery f the target by direct queries, but mst installatins require that the target request the firmware binaries fr update. HP SUM launches a lcal HTTP server n the system running HP SUM t prvide that firmware retrieval capability. This incming HTTP request t the server running HP SUM might be blcked by firewall sftware n the server running HP SUM r by firewalls in the netwrk. When blcked by a firewall, HP SUM will generally start the firmware update, but then fail. Usually the lg will indicate sme issue with HTTP retrieval f the firmware binary. If this type f failure ccurs, either temprarily disable the firewall r add a rule t allw incming HTTP. Many firewall sftware vendrs have a learning mde that can be used t help enable this rule by letting the sftware knw that this is expected and allwed behavir. See the HP SUM Release Ntes (www.hp.cm/supprt/hp_sum_rn_en) fr specific methds fr sme vendrs. Example screen with errr frm HP SUM 6.0.0 and later: 23

Pending System Firmware Update On HP Integrity rack-munt and c-class systems, System Firmware (SFW) is part f the platfrm firmware that is updated via the ilo management interface. If the system is pwered n at the time f the update, SFW cannt be immediately prgrammed int flash because it is in use. ilo stages the SFW image and will perfrm the prgramming nce the system is pwered dwn. At that time, the update will take abut 6 minutes and then the system can be pwered back up again. Example screen with rebt ptin enabled in HP SUM 6.0.0 and later: 24

When HP SUM perfrms a system update that includes SFW, it prvides the ptin f allwing HP SUM t sequence thrugh this sequence. HP SUM will issue a graceful OS shutdwn request, mnitr the SFW prgramming, and then issue a pwer n request nce it is dne. If the HP SUM install is dne withut selecting this ptin, and yu d nt immediately perfrm the pwer cycle manually, the SFW is said t be in a pending state. ilo will nt allw anther update t prceed until that existing pending SFW update is either activated r cancelled. Example screen with pending firmware frm HP SUM 6.0.0 and later: 25

If a subsequent HP SUM sessin is started against the same server, HP SUM will detect that there is a pending SFW update n the system and will prvide ptins fr handling the situatin. HP SUM can leave the system t be manually pwered dwn at a future date. That target will nt be able t cntinue with any platfrm level updates by HP SUM. HP SUM can activate the pending SFW. If selected, HP SUM will walk thrugh the sequence f pwering dwn the system and making sure the SFW update cmpletes successfully. The target will then be available t cntinue with any new platfrm level updates in the same HP SUM sessin. HP SUM can cancel the pending SFW. If selected, HP SUM will issue a reset cmmand t ilo, which will cancel the pending SFW, while keeping the OS still bted. The target will then be available t cntinue with any new platfrm level updates in the same HP SUM sessin. Nte: Because ilo and SFW are meant t be installed in pairs, cancelling just the SFW update might leave the system in an unstable state at the next bt time. The cancel ptin is nt recmmended unless yu are abut t perfrm a new full platfrm firmware install and update ilo and SFW t a new recipe. Nte: On Superdme 2 npartitins, it is pssible t install but nt activate partitin firmware, but this is nt the same issue. On Superdme 2, additinal updates can be applied even when partitin firmware is pending activatin. 26

Manually Managing Pending System Firmware T manually check fr pending SFW, use the ilo GUI r CLI. Frm the ilo GUI, select the Status Summary menu, and then the FW Revisins tab: Frm the ilo CLI cmmand menu, issue the sr cmmand. Any pending SFW will be shwn. 27

A pending SFW state may be activated by pwering dwn the server. This des nt mean remving A/C pwer, but instead, it means remving main DC pwer t the main server, while the standby pwer t ilo remains n. This can be dne in several ways: Frm ilo CLI cmmand menu pc ff Frm ilo GUI, pwer management tab Frm HP-UX shutdwn h Nte: shutdwn r and rebt d NOT pwer dwn the server. These cmmands might nly result in HP-UX stpping, but the firmware will nt be activated. The systems may nt rebt until pwer is shutdwn via the ilo at that pint. If yu must t manually cancel the pending SFW update, cancel the update via the ilo CLI cmmand menu using the fw cancel cmmand. Nte: This shuld nly be dne under extenuating circumstances because it might leave the system with incmpatible ilo and SFW images. A full platfrm firmware update shuld be immediately perfrmed. 28

Driver Versin Dependency Failure T install I/O card firmware n HP-UX, the firmware cmpnents require a minimum driver versin. If the driver is nt at the crrect minimum, a dependency failure errr message will appear in the target status area. Clicking the dependency failure link will bring up a descriptin f the errr including what the expected minimum versin is. HP SUM cannt cntinue t update I/O cards supprted by that smart cmpnent until the driver is updated manually. HP SUM cannt autmatically update drivers t meet the minimum requirements. 29

In general, all f the ptins fr a server family will lead t the same firmware bundle ptins. 7) The next page that is presented generally shws a list f perating systems. Fr firmware updates, click Crss perating system (BIOS, Firmware, Diagnstics, etc). 8) A list f available dwnlads, including HP SUM firmware bundles appears. The list f available ptins varies between server mdels. The specific bundle ptins are explained in sectins belw under each general type f server. Nte: In all cases, each firmware bundle is listed nce with files t run frm a Windws management system and nce with files t run frm a Linux management system. Bth versins f the bundle will include the same enclsure, platfrm and I/O firmware (as apprpriate). Chse the ne t dwnlad that matches the server yu will run HP SUM frm. Either can be used t update the remte HP Integrity servers in the same fashin. 30

c-class Blades There are 3 types f HP SUM firmware bundles prvided fr HP Integrity c-class blades, under tw different headings: Under Firmware Bundle 1) CludSystem Matrix Firmware bundles These bundles include firmware fr enclsures: Onbard Administratr, Virtual Cnnect and HP Integrity Blades with specific versins that match the CludSystem Matrix versin. The bundles include filtering infrmatin s HP SUM can determine if the target enclsure is set t the matching CludSystem Matrix versin. 2) General bundles with full enclsure These bundles include firmware fr enclsures: Onbard Administratr, Virtual Cnnect and HP Integrity Blades. I/O card firmware fr nline HP-UX updates will be included in a rlling fashin as new versins f firmware bundles are released. The firmware versins in these bundles represent an apprved and tested recipe. Under Firmware System 3) HP Integrity server nly bundles These bundles include just the firmware fr Integrity Blades and mezzanine I/O cards. They d nt include an additinal enclsure firmware. These are made available t ease deplyment in sme cases where special versins f enclsure firmware are needed that are different frm the recipe prvided in the general bundles. These might be useful fr a mixed-envirnment with HP PrLiant blades, lder CludSystem Matrix revisins that d nt have a specific bundle, r ther situatins. 31

Rack-munt Servers There is nly ne type f HP SUM firmware bundle prvided fr HP Integrity rack-munt servers, under the Firmware System heading. Bundles under this heading include firmware fr just the server. Firmware fr HP I/O cards that are apprved fr use in the server will be included in a rlling fashin as new versins f firmware bundles are released. Superdme 2 Servers There is nly ne type f HP SUM firmware bundle prvided fr Superdme 2 servers, under the Firmware Bundle heading. Bundles under this heading include firmware fr just the server. Firmware fr HP I/O cards that are apprved fr use in Superdme 2 IO expansin cabinets will be included in a rlling fashin as new versins f firmware bundles are released. 32

Files t Dwnlad Underneath each bundle, there might be tw r three files listed. 1) The main firmware bundle. This will be the.exe r.tar.gz file, which is the main firmware bundle. This is the nly file that is required t be dwnladed. Once dwnladed and ptinally verified: On Windws: execute the.exe file as yu wuld any prgram and yu will be presented with an ptin t extract the files t a directry. On Linux: extract the tar.gz file using tar xvf <filename> r a Linux graphical archive management utility. 2) The MD5 checksum file This file can be used t validate the integrity f the main dwnladed bundle using an MD5 check prgram. It can be used by a MD5 checksum validatin tl (such as md5sum n Linux) t verify the dwnladed firmware image is the ne expected and there was n crruptin during the dwnlad. 3) [pssibly] A bundle cntents file This file is nt needed and is being remved frm dwnlad pages as sn as pssible. 33
