Blackboard Portfolio Quick Reference Guide for Students How to Create a Portfolio 1. On the My Institution tab, under Tools, click on the Portfolio link. 2. From the My Portfolios page, click the Create Portfolio button. 3. On the Create Portfolio page, type a title for your portfolio. 4. If you are using a template, click the Select Portfolio Template button, and select the appropriate template from the pop-up list, and click the Submit button. 5. Type a description for your portfolio (optional). 6. Make sure that Available is checked, so that your portfolio is available to users who have access to view it. 7. If you do not want users who can view your portfolio to see comments, check the Comments are Private box. These settings can be changed later. 8. Click Submit when finished. 9. You can Take the Tour of the portfolio interface, this is recommended for new users of portfolios. Otherwise, skip the tour by clicking No thanks, I ll explore on my own, and the portfolio will open for editing. How to Customize a Portfolio 1. Click the Preview and Customize button to change the layout and color of the portfolio pages. 2. Click the Customize Style button in the upper left corner. 3. From the Layout drop-down menu, select one of the four layouts. 4. From the Color drop-down menu, select a color from the list. 5. Click Save when finished. How to Submit a Portfolio Assignment 1. In your course, click the link to your portfolio assignment. 2. Under Assignment Submission, click the Select Portfolio button. 3. On the Select Portfolio page, select the Portfolio you want to upload to your assignment. 4. Click Submit to add your Portfolio to the assignment. 5. Click Submit when finished. How to Insert an Image 1. From the My Portfolios page, click the Edit link on the portfolio you want to work on 2. Click the pencil icon in the Section where you want to insert the image. 3. The content editor will open. You can enlarge your view by clicking on the Full Screen icon on the right. You can also resize the text editor by dragging the right corner edge. 4. Click on the Insert/Edit Image icon to open the Image Editor 5. Click Browse My Computer button to find the image to insert, select the image, and click Open. 6. Add an image description and title. The image description will be read as alternative text, by the screen reader, for users of assisted technology. The title information displays as text when you mouse over the image. Make sure to put the same text in both boxes. 7. Click on the Appearance tab to set the alignment, size and other attributes of the image. 8. Click the Insert button. 9. Click the Save button when finished. How to Edit an Image 1. Click on the pencil icon to open the Content Editor where the image is located 2. Right click on the image and select Image from the pop-up menu. 3. Click the Browse My Computer button to find and select a different image from your computer. 4. Click Open. 5. Note: Make sure that the description and title boxes are populated, with the same descriptive text for the new image. The image description will be read as alternative text, by the screen reader, for users of assisted technology. 6. Make changes on the Appearance tab, as needed, to change alignment, size, and other image attributes. 7. Click Update. 8. Click Save when finished. How to Create a Hyperlink 1. Click on the pencil icon to open the Content Editor where the hyperlink will be placed. 2. Highlight the text you want to convert into a hyperlink---make sure the text is descriptive of the source or website. 3. Select the Insert/Edit Link icon in the content editor. 4. Paste a link into the Link Path field. 5. Select a Target from the drop-down menu. 6. Click Insert. 7. Click Save when finished. Important! Hyperlink text should be descriptive, so that the purpose of the link, is clear. When inserting a hyperlink, make sure that it describes the website or source. This is important for individuals who use a screen reader. Do not use non-descriptive text, such as "click here", or a long URL, because individuals who use a screen reader, may miss important information. Last Updated: 6/1/2018 Page 2
How to Embed a YouTube Video 1. Click the pencil icon to open the Content Editor. 2. Click the Mashups icon. 3. Select YouTube Video from the drop-down menu. 4. In the search box, type the name or title of the video. 5. Click Go. A list of results will display. 6. Click Select on the video of your choice from the search results. 7. In the Name field, you can change the name of the video. 8. Under Mashup Options, you can change the view. Thumbnail is the default view option, but the Embed Video option, will show the video player directly in the Portfolio page, and does not take up any storage space in your Portfolio. 9. If you want viewers to access the video outside of your Portfolio page, select Yes to show the URL of the video. 10. If you don t want to show YouTube s suggested videos at the end of playback, select No for the Show YouTube Information option. 11. Click Preview to see how the mashup will appear in the web page. 12. Click Submit. 13. Click Save to add the video. Important! Videos must be captioned. Providing captions allows accessible content for individuals with hearing impairments, and can benefit other users, like non-native speakers. It is also a requirement, of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. MovieCaptioner is a free video captioning software that is available in your eraider account. How to Add Media 1. Click the pencil icon to open the Content Editor. 2. Click the Insert/Edit Embedded Media icon. 3. Select the Type of media from the drop-down box. 4. Enter the location of the video or audio file in the File/URL box. By entering a URL location, the video or audio file will not be stored on the Blackboard site, so there will be no size limitations. 5. You can also click Browse My Computer to search for a video, or audio file on your computer or in your OneDrive folder. 6. Type the dimensions of the video in the Dimensions box. 7. If you do not want the viewer to enlarge the video, check the Constrain Proportions box. 8. You can type the dimensions of the video in the Dimensions box or allow it to default. 9. Click Insert. 10. Click Save to add the video or audio file. Important! The maximum upload size for a single file is 2.5 gigabytes. If your video or audio file is larger than 2.5 gigabytes, save it in your OneDrive folder, and embed it in your Portfolio, using the Insert/Edit Embedded Media option. How to Add Artifacts from a File 1. Click the Add Artifact link in the Page or Section of your Portfolio where you would like to insert the artifact. 2. Select Add Personal Artifact. 3. Provide a title, description, and content information. The title will be used as a link to the artifact and is required. The description is only visible to you. The content information will display when the user clicks on the title to view the artifact. So, make sure that you put good descriptive language about the contents of the file. 4. Select Browse My Computer to upload a file from your computer. 5. Click Open. Notice the title and link to the file, near the bottom of the page. 6. To upload a file from Content Collection, click Browse Content Collection and select a file to upload from one of your folders. 7. Click Submit. 8. Click Submit to save the artifact(s) to the portfolio. How to Add Artifacts from a Course 1. Click the Add Artifact link in the Page or Section of your Portfolio where you would like to insert the artifact. 2. Select Add from Course. 3. Select the course with the assignment that you want to include in your portfolio. 4. A list of your graded assignments will display for that course. You, can only add an artifact from a course, if your assignment has been graded. 5. Click the checkbox next to the assignment or assignments you want to add from the course. 6. Click Submit. 9. From the drop-down menu, click the checkbox next to the information you want to include for the artifact. Note: The Submission Information will include the file that s attached to the graded assignment. 10. Click Close to close the drop-down menu. 11. Click on the artifact link to view the artifact. How to Add Files to your My Artifacts Library 1. On the My Portfolios page, click on the My Artifacts button on the left-hand menu. 2. On the My Artifacts page, you can either select Add Personal Artifact, and follow the steps in the How to Add Artifacts from a File section. 3. Or, select Add Artifacts from Course, and follow the steps in the How to Add Artifacts from a Course section. How to Download a Portfolio 1. From the My Portfolios page, click More and then Download. 2. When the Download screen appears, click the Download icon or the Click to download Portfolio link. The portfolio will download as a zip file. 3. Extract all the files from the zip file to your computer or storage device and click the index.html file to launch the portfolio. How to Share a Portfolio (Internal Users) 1. From the My Portfolios page, click More and then Share. 2. Click the Share a Snapshot with drop-down menu. 3. Select Users. 4. In the Username field enter the eraider ID of one or more users or click Browse to search. 5. Under Email Information, check Send Email to notify the users that a Portfolio has been shared with them. Users will be able to see a snapshot of your portfolio in the Shared with Me section. 6. Click Submit. How to Share a Portfolio (External Users) 1. From the My Portfolios page, click More and then Share. 2. Click the Share a Snapshot with drop-down menu. 3. Select External Users. 4. Enter the email address in the Email Recipients field. For multiple email addresses separate with commas. 5. Under Email Information, you can edit the subject and message body of the email. Note: Do not edit or remove the <PORTFOLIO_URL> because the system will automatically replace it with the actual URL for the Portfolio. 6. Optional: Under Portfolio Password, enter a password that will be required to access your portfolio. 7. Optional: Under Expiration, determine the amount of time the snapshot will be valid such as No expiration or Lifetime of Pass with specific details (e.g. number of days, weeks, months etc.). Note: At the end of the expiration period the snapshot will no longer be available. 8. Click Submit. Last Updated: 6/1/2018 Page 5
How to Share a Portfolio (Courses) 1. From the My Portfolios page, click More and then Share. 2. Click the Share a Snapshot with drop-down menu. 3. Select Courses. 4. Enter the course ID or select the Browse button to search for the course(s) 5. Type the search criteria or keyword and click the Search button to pull up a list of courses. 6. Select the course(s) that you want to share your portfolio with, and click Submit 7. Click Submit when finished. 8. Users will be able to see a snapshot of all the portfolios shared in the course under the Shared with Me section, by clicking Discover Portfolios, on the top right-hand corner of the Shared with Me page. Note: If your instructor has created a link in the course for shared portfolios, click on that link and you will be able to see a snapshot of all the shared portfolios in the course. How to Remove a Shared Portfolio (Courses) 1. From the My Portfolios page, click More and then Share on the portfolio you want to remove from a course 2. On the Share Portfolio page, select the snapshot you want to remove, and click the Remove this Snapshot button. Any portfolio snapshot listed on the page that is shared with a course will include the word Course and the Course ID/Name to distinguish it from other shared snapshots. 3. Click OK at the prompt. Note: This will remove the snapshot of the portfolio from the course, and access to the snapshot. Repeat these steps for each portfolio you want to remove from a course.
