Hardware Announcement October 15, 2004 IBM i5 520, 550, and 570 servers now even more functional, flexible, and affordable Overview The IBM i5 server line, introduced in May 2004, is enhanced. Support for the new PCI-X Ultra4 RAID disk controllers is extended to earlier iseries servers. Lower software tier for the model 520... more upgrade paths The model 520 software tier is reduced from P30 to P20. This reduces the cost of the 2-way 520, and makes it more attractive when comparing it to the larger 1/4-way model 550, which also uses a P20 software tier. Also, it s now easier to move to the POWER5 capability of the 520 with more upgrade paths from models 810, 820, and 830 directly into the 2-way 520. Integrated xseries server features Integrated xseries server (IXS) features can help you reduce the cost and complexity of deploying and managing Intel servers supporting Microsoft Windows or Linux operating systems. The new IXS features offer: 2.0 GHz Intel Pentium M processor 1 GB base server memory Built-in dual 1 Gbps Ethernet adapters Enabled for Windows and Linux operating systems Storage features The 5790 PCI-X Expansion Unit is a very granular offering of six PCI-X slots in a compact rack-mounted package. Twelve PCI-X slots are held in just four EIA units in a 19-inch rack. The 2780 PCI-X Ultra4 RAID Disk Controller is now also supported on iseries models 270, 800, 810, 820, 825, 830, 840, 870, and 890 using either i5/os V5R3 or OS/400 V5R2. The 2780 provides a RAID disk controller with a concurrent maintenance battery for greater availability and a large read and write cache for higher performance. Racking enhancements Model 520 can be converted from deskside to rack-mount. OEM rack-mounted options are deeper rail options for models 520 and 550. A 2-meter rack is available in addition to the current 1.8-meter rack. IBM eserver i5... innovative POWER5 servers flexible on demand pricing Planned availability dates November 19, 2004, exceptions listed in the Description section. Use of these facilities is optional. The security measures supplied by i5/os are designed to reduce the risk of users changing or destroying data resources, but do not prevent it. The i5/os security features include the use of passwords, a security option to limit a user to only functions provided by customer-designed menus, and a security option to limit read/write access for files, libraries, and folders during normal operations. To achieve increased security, the i5/os controls should be combined with physical security, division of duties, and other appropriate measures. The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities. IBM Electronic Services IBM Global Services has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to put you on the road to higher systems availability. IBM Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that provides you with an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support on the IBM eserver. You should benefit from greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. IBM Electronic Services is comprised of two separate but complementary elements: IBM Electronic Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent. IBM Electronic Services news page provides you with a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used by customers to access IBM Internet services and support. By using the news page, it enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems. The IBM Electronic Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your IBM eserver system that is designed to proactively monitor events and transmit system inventory information to IBM on a periodic customer-defined timetable. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that maintains higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems. To learn how IBM Electronic Services can work for you, visit http://www.ibm.com/support/electronic Terms and conditions This product is available for purchase under the terms of the IBM Customer Agreement (ICA). Each IBM machine is manufactured from parts that may be new or used. In some cases, a machine may not be new and may have been previously installed. Regardless, IBM s appropriate warranty terms apply. Same license terms and conditions as designated machine. -3-104-377
